Apple TV+ has now released the new tense trailer for Presumed Innocent, the limited series coming to the streaming service courtesy of David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams. The legal drama has Jake Gyllenhaal in for the fight of his life as he defends himself from allegations of murdering a peer with whom he shared a complicated entanglement. It doesn’t look good for Gyllenhaal’s character, as a plethora of evidence is working against him, and he can only continually profess his innocence.
The official synopsis reads,
“Gyllenhaal is set to star as Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor whose world is upended when a close colleague is murdered — and the evidence begins to point to Rusty himself. The role would be his first ongoing part in a TV series. Presumed Innocent was previously adapted for a 1990 feature film that starred Harrison Ford as Sabich, along with Bonnie Bedelia and Raul Julia.

Apple TV+ has revealed the first teaser-trailer for “Presumed Innocent” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, from Emmy-winning creator David E. Kelley.
Gyllenhaal narrates the trailer as Rusty Sabich, a man seemingly consumed by his love for a woman named Carolyn (Renate Reinsve). “She woke something up inside me,” he says as the footage cuts between his time with her and images of cars and courtrooms and arguments — clearly invoking a darker twist in this alleged romance. Carolyn, it turns out, has been murdered and, given their history, Rusty is the prime suspect.
What the trailer leaves out is extra juicy: Rusty and Carolyn were coworkers and prosecutors, and the suspected crime sends waves through the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office as they mourn a colleague, reel from an affair, and pursue a murder investigation — to say nothing of how it affects Rusty’s marriage and home life.
The rest of the cast includes Ruth Negga,...

Nathan Lane used to be the King of old Broadway. Scratch that. Lane still sits from a high seat within the realm of American theater. In fact, when we catch up with the legendary, multi-Tony and Olivier award-winner, it’s during his day off from Studio 54. The other six days of the week, he’s at that famous nightclub turned theater, starring in Sharr White’s new memory play, Pictures from Home.
Nonetheless, for many theatergoers, the thought of Lane invariably brings to mind an iconic American musical-comedy: Mel Brooks’ The Producers. That dazzling blend of absurdist humor and showbiz schmaltz premiered in 2001 before going on to win 12 Tonys, the most for any musical or play to this day. And in the show, Lane played Max Bialystock, a Broadway producer of malleable morality who is introduced lamenting his current situation with the song “King of Broadway,” a tune with...

The Tony Awards contest for the top honor of Best Play is the most crowded it has been in at least a decade. A whopping 17 new dramatic works will vie for only five slots that recognize the most stellar productions and playwrights on Broadway. This season, the plays in contention hail from renowned dramatists like Tony winners Tom Stoppard for “Leopoldstadt” and David Auburn for “Summer, 1976,” and past nominee Sharr White for “Pictures From Home.” Notably, there are also three winners of the Pulitzer Prize eligible this season: James Ijames’ “Fat Ham,” Stephen Adly Guirgis’ “Between Riverside and Crazy,” and Martyna Majok’s “Cost of Living.” If all three of these works land nominations, the Tonys will set a record for the most Pulitzer winners nominated for Best Play in one year in history.
According to our current combined odds, it is very possible that history will indeed be made this year.

Why do we always remember the arguments? If there’s a family spat at the Thanksgiving table, it’ll be remembered long after grandma’s gravy recipe is lost to the ages.
Sharr White’s new play Pictures From Home drives that simple truth all the way home, and then makes so many return trips you imagine the ride could be made blindfolded. Given a loving production, the play opens tonight at Broadway’s Studio 54, with a trio of Broadway’s best – Nathan Lane, Danny Burstein, and Zoё Wanamaker – who couldn’t be more devoted to the sentimental memory play if it was about their own families. And Pictures From Home frequently pierces through its own nostalgia with an observation clear and crisp as a brand new Polaroid. Lots and lots of Polaroids.

Ewan McGregor has won the Emmy Award for lead actor in a limited series for his role in the Netflix show “Halston.”
McGregor beat out an impressive list of competitors in the category including: Paul Bettany for the Disney Plus-Marvel Studios series “WandaVision,” Hugh Grant for HBO’s “The Undoing,” and Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. for Disney Plus’ filmed version of “Hamilton.”
In his acceptance speech, McGregor thanked the cast and crew of the show.
“I just want to thank our crew first of all because like so many people have said tonight, we shot through the pandemic in New York City and through everybody’s professionalism and passion, kept us all safe. And so we couldn’t have done it without you,” McGregor said. “Ryan Murphy, thanks for championing ‘Halston’ and bringing it to Netflix. Thank you to Netflix.”
This is McGregor’s fourth Emmy nomination overall and his first win.

Generation (Genera+ion) may not continue on for a sophomore season at HBO Max, but creator Zelda Barnz said the series achieved its goal within its short-lived airtime.
“I think its purpose was simply to exist, as something intimate and honest for queer people,” she wrote for Entertainment Weekly. “I’m grateful we got to make this show at all, because there was a great deal of uncertainty in even pitching a show about queer teenagers in such a specific setting.”
Just a day after HBO Max announced that it had opted not to renew the Lena Dunham-produced dramedy for a second season, Barnz penned her thoughts about the cancellation for Entertainment Weekly. In addition to responding to Generation‘s abrupt end, Barnz also explained the final moments of the series finale.

If ’70s fashion designer Halston is a creation, a persona, an idea of a person (one with taste), one that eventually gets watered down and then wisps away under the thumb of mass marketing beyond its initial couture means and origins, “Halston,” the glorified SparksNotes posing as prestige mini-series of the rise and fall of the fashion icon created by Sharr White and executive produced by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan is similarly hollow to the mass-marketed garbage he peddled in the ‘80.

Halston, the mononymous designer whose peak fame dovetailed with the celebrity whirl of Studio 54-era New York, rose thanks to his originality and coasted thanks to his willingness to be duplicated. In the new Netflix limited series, also called “Halston,” we see, at first, Ewan McGregor’s gleeful realization at just how much money he can make stamping his name on inferior product; later, he realizes the fees he’s collected came at the price of his artistic soul. “You are not Halston anymore,” an intimate informs him, as the loss of his autonomy sinks in, suddenly and all at once. “They are.”
Producer Ryan Murphy never works alone — “Halston” was created by Sharr White, directed by Daniel Minahan, and produced by, among others, Christine Vachon. But his stamp is easily detectable. And it hardly takes a Murphy obsessive to note the timing of a show about an artist whose...

To writer, producer and director Daniel Minahan, fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick, known as Halston, was the “first influencer.”
“He’s somebody who really succeeded on marketing and branding himself,” Minahan says, adding that his mark is still left on “our everyday lives and culture” today.
The subject of Minahan’s five-episode limited series, aptly titled “Halston” and bowing May 14 on Netflix, first became known as a hat designer, eventually working for Bergdorf Goodman and designing the pillbox hat Jacqueline Kennedy wore when her husband John F. Kennedy was sworn in as president. But later in that decade he expanded into women’s clothing in general, becoming known for luxurious looks before expanding again the following decade into uniforms and fragrances. In the 1980s he created a more accessible fashion line for J.C. Penney. Ewan McGregor portrays the titular designer in Minahan’s series, and he also executive produces.

On Monday, representatives for the Halston Archives and Family slammed Netflix’s anticipated drama Halston, calling it “an inaccurate, fictionalized account.”
“The Halston Archives and Family were not consulted on the upcoming Netflix series,” they said in a statement released via PR Newswire. “The Halston Archives remains the only definitive and comprehensive source on the man and his legacy as the personally appointed custodian of his private papers and effects.”
Scheduled to debut on May 14, Halston tells the story of the iconic American fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick (Ewan McGregor), who achieved international fame in the 1970s. The miniseries, based on the book Simply Halston by Steven Gaines, is executive produced by McGregor, Sharr White, and Ryan Murphy, along with Ian Brennan, Pamela Koffler, Eric Kovtun, Alexis Martin Woodall, Daniel Minahan and Christine Vachon.
