NYC is a haven for repertory cinema, with the exhibition of classic and overlooked cinemas from all corners of the world finding its footing again as the pandemic continues. However, with rising costs, the projection of celluloid prints shouldn’t be taken for granted, and a new fund has launched a grant opportunity with the mission to preserve this tradition.
The nonprofit organization Film Exhibition Fund has announced its inaugural round of Celluloid Series Support Grants, with awards of up to 2,500 available to curators and venues serving the greater New York City community. With applications now open until April 29 to theaters, film centers, museums, and other organizations interested in the screening of celluloid, the fund aims to aid in paying growingly prohibitive costs: the shipment of film prints, projectionist fees, archival rentals, programmatic research, and other related expenses.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive tracks from Jay Wadley’s Swan Song score, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records on December 17—the same day that the Apple Original Film premieres in theaters and globally on Apple TV+. Nine instant grat tracks will be available with every preorder.
The first feature from Oscar-winning writer-director Benjamin Cleary is set in the near future and centers on Cameron (Mahershala Ali), a loving husband and father diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an alternative solution by his doctor (Glenn Close) to shield his family from grief. As Cam grapples with whether or not to alter his family’s fate, he ends up learning more about life and love than he ever imagined he would.
For the film marking his first collaboration with Cleary, Wadley looked to evoke deeply felt emotions, maintaining at the same time a sense of space and minimalism.

The American Film Institute said Tuesday that it has added the world premieres of Apple Original Films’ Swan Song, starring two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, and Halle Berry’s directorial debut Bruised from Netflix to this year’s AFI Fest lineup.
When Netflix picked up Bruised at the Toronto Film Festival last year, the pic was in its unfinished form, and its debut in November will be the first time it’s being shown to moviegoers in polished form.
Swan Song and Bruised will screen in-person at the Tcl Chinese Theatre on Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13, respectively.
Swan Song reps Oscar winner Benjamin Cleary’s (Stutterer) feature directorial debut and follows Ali as a man diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an alternative solution by his doctor (Glenn Close) to shield his family from grief. The pic also stars Naomie Harris, Awkwafina and Adam Beach. Cleary wrote the screenplay.

Despite the streaming service’s name, Apple TV+ isn’t just television — it’s also in the original film game. (That would be the “+.”) Apple has just announced that the latest original film to join its upcoming slate is “Swan Song,” starring two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali and written and directed by Academy Award winner Benjamin Cleary (“Stutterer”).
“Benjamin’s script for ‘Swan Song’ immediately connected with us,” said Matt Dentler, Apple’s head of feature development and acquisitions. “We cannot wait to bring Benjamin’s vision together with Mahershala’s undeniable talent to deliver this powerfully layered story to audiences around the world.”
Details about the film are sparse right now, but Apple describes “Swan Song” as “a genre-bending drama” set in the near future and focused on how far someone will go and how much they will sacrifice to make a happier life for the people they love.

Exclusive: Hulu is on the verge of pulling off a neat trick: a deal sources place around $2 million for The Untitled Amazing Johnathan Documentary. The Ben Berman-directed film premiered last Friday at The Marc, competing in the U.S. Documentary Competition.
The film charts the changing journey for Berman after he began a docu called The Amazing Johnathan, about a uniquely deranged magician who built a career out of shock and deception in the 1980s. After Johnathan is diagnosed with a terminal heart condition and given one year to live, he’s forced to retire his act and Berman’s film seemed kaput. Three years later, Johnathan didn’t die, and Berman filmed the illusionist on an epic comeback tour. And then things happened that led the filmmaker to question what is truth and what is illusion.
Multiple suitors were in the mix.

Netflix has picked up Bonding, the seven-episode short-form dark comedy series from Rightor Doyle (Barry). Filmed on location in New York last fall with backspills and Anonymous Content producing, Bonding had its premiere at Outfest this past summer and was screened at other festivals. According to sources, blackpills had an option to put it on their platform but instead producers brought it to Netflix, which bought the series fully produced and there will be no editing on it.
