The John Woo identity switch film Face/Off is one of those 90s action movies that is memorable for good and bad reasons. With such a far-out concept and a beautiful excess of mayhem mixed with some fun drama, it’s easy to see why it made a mark the way it did, much more than Woo’s previous American effort, Broken Arrow, which was a more run-of-the-mill action movie. It’s also a film that seems like a one-and-done for the stars, no matter how much Paramount would want to franchise the title.

The iconic action film of the ‘90s Face/Off is reportedly getting a sequel after almost three decades. The John Woo directorial starred Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as the leads, swapping faces to best each other in a cat-and-mouse chase. The film gained a cult following upon release and earned $245 million at the box office.
The sequel was announced back in 2021, with Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard taking over the reins as director. At the time it was reported that the film would recast the leads, despite taking off from where the first film ended. However, an insider reported that Travolta and Cage might return for the sequel.
Will Nicolas Cage And John Travolta Return For Face/Off 2? Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Face/Off
Nicolas Cage and John Travolta starred as the face-swapped FBI Agent-Terrorist duo Sean Archer and Castor Troy in John Woo’s Face/Off.

It's a new year, so it's time for a new Blu-ray round-up! Our first of 2024! Things are a little sparse here in at the start of the year, but there's still some great stuff to check out. We have Eli Roth's holiday slasher "Thanksgiving" to carve things up. Also, the fine folks at Kino Lorber have released John Woo's bonkers action extravaganza "Face/Off" on 4K! "Face/Off" is technically a December release, but we're including it now. Speaking of action, we also have a 4K release of Gareth Evans' "The Raid," aka "The Raid: Redemption." Finally, on the non-action movie front, we have the Criterion release of John Sayles' Western neo-noir character drama "Lone Star."
So let's get to it. And remember to keep spinning those discs.

John Woo’s maximalist style and taste for melodrama allowed him to ply his wares in Hollywood with far less friction than usually arises when an Asian auteur attempts to adapt their m.o. to meet American filmmaking demands. Despite issues with the more aggressive oversight of Hollywood execs, his Hard Target and Broken Arrow were both box office successes that, especially in the case of the former, retained a remarkable amount of Woo’s signature aesthetic flourishes and artistic philosophy. But the purest and maddest canvas on which he painted one of his American yarns remains Face/Off, a film that magnifies the over-the-top methods of its lead actors as adroitly as his Heroic Bloodshed films reflected the practiced cool of Chow Yun-fat.

Silent Night, the latest film from the legendary John Woo, reached theatres on December 1st (you can read our review at This Link) – and while Woo was doing the press rounds for his new movie, The Hollywood Reporter took the opportunity to ask him about a couple revivals of his older works: the remake of his 1989 film The Killer, which Woo is directing himself, and the sequel to his 1997 film Face/Off, which is set to be directed by Godzilla vs. Kong‘s Adam Wingard.
Asked why he has decided to remake his own film with the new take on The Killer (which went into production this past summer), Woo said, “Well, the project was in the works for many years, but it was hard to find a director to direct it. So when I came back [to the States], we got support from Universal, and they asked me to do it. So I...

Face/Off ranks as the most universally acclaimed of director John Woo’s North American output. While Hard Target is a cult classic, and Broken Arrow was a solid hit, 1997’s Face/Off was the first time Woo got to really flex his action chops, being granted creative control by the studio. It’s his only American film that comes close to matching his Hong Kong classics like The Killer and Hard-Boiled. The result was a star-driven action extravaganza that became one of the biggest worldwide hits of the year.
In it, John Travolta plays Sean Archer, an FBI agent looking to avenge the death of his son at the hands of a terrorist for hire named Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage). He manages to catch Troy, but not before the terrorist places a bomb somewhere in Los Angeles, leading to a wild plot. Archer will take the catatonic Troy’s face and...

“I would love to get back into the ‘Face/Off’ ring,” Cage said.
In the original film, Travolta played FBI agent Sean Archer, who undergoes a groundbreaking surgery to trade faces with his arch enemy, Cage’s terrorist Castor Troy, in order to defeat him.
“I think Face/Off is so unique and there’s a lot to mention there that could be explored, especially dealing with the offspring of the characters,” he said of a possible sequel. “It would be almost like three-dimensional chess, three different layers, with the kids and the parents and everybody trying to like face-off.”

Update: Shortly after publication, "Face/Off 2" writer Simon Barrett confirmed via Twitter that the plot Nicolas Cage alluded to in this article was in fact, the plan for the sequel. The article continues as originally published below the Tweet.

John Woo's 1997 action flick "Face/Off" is one of the wildest, highest-concept action flicks in all of existence, and that's what makes it so great. Criminal mastermind Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage) kidnaps his nemesis, a federal agent named Sean Archer (John Travolta), and switches their faces through plastic surgery. It's a totally ludicrous premise that works because of Woo's over-the-top action sensibilities and Travolta and Cage's willingness to fully commit to their gonzo roles. After all, they each had to play both roles, but with the...

Ten months ago, Face/Off (watch it Here) star Nicolas Cage said he hadn’t heard anything about the Face/Off sequel, even though it was announced that Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard and his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett were working on a “direct sequel” to John Woo’s 1997 sci-fi action classic way back at the start of 2021. Thankfully, Cage and Wingard have since met up to discuss the possibilities of the Face/Off sequel – and during an interview with Collider, Cage said that it wouldn’t only be a rematch between his character Castor Troy and John Travolta’s Sean Archer. This one will also add their adult children into the mix.
Cage said, “I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability. It’s almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up,...

It's always fun when actors associated with one show you love pop up on another.
Almost a year after Days of Our Lives' Shawn Christian guest starred on Chicago Med, another alum from the long-running soap will appear on Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 11: Jen Lilley.
Although Lilley is not playing her Days character on Med, the patient she plays might have something in common with Theresa Donovan: a substance abuse problem.
According to spoilers, Asher and Archer will use AI to help treat opiate abuse. Since photos have them working with Lilley's character, this patient is likely abusing painkillers.
This should be a compelling storyline for several reasons.

John Woo's "Face/Off" has been cemented into popular culture due to a plethora of reasons, be it the powerhouse, all-in performances by the leads, an implausible, yet fun central premise, or simply the idea of John Travolta and Nicolas Cage swapping faces. The face transplant scene in "Face/Off" forms the crux of the narrative, as it allows the characters to slip into the shoes of another, and the results are both hilarious and terrifying.
As a quick refresher, "Face/Off'' follows government agent Sean Archer (Travolta) and eccentric criminal Castor Troy (Cage), who share a mutual hatred, exacerbated after Troy accidentally kills Archer's son during an assassination...

Paramount continues developing a sequel to director John Woo's 1997 science fiction action feature "Face/Off":
"...in the original film, 'Sean Archer' (John Travolta) is an 'FBI' agent obsessed with capturing 'Castor Troy' (Nicolas Cage), a ruthless lowlife who years before accidentally killed Archer's son. Archer's single-minded pursuit of Troy has caused serious harm to his marriage, but Archer thinks the light may have appeared at the end of the tunnel when a seriously wounded Troy is captured in a bloody shootout.

It’s been a joke for a while now about just how wild Nicolas Cage can be when acting in films. Unlike actors who turn in objectively bad performances, none of what Cage does can be deemed “bad.” Often unique, and sometimes borderline crazed, Cage goes for broke with nearly every role put in front of him. And perhaps the most legendary example of this is in the classic John Woo action film, “Face/Off.” It’s a film that even Cage looks back on and calls “trippy.”

Now that we’re aware of a Face/Off sequel coming, not a remake or reboot, it feels safe to say that wondering just who is going to be placed on the cast is a fair question. It feels like too much of an effort to make John Travolta go through such a thing again or Sean Archer we should say. But it would be nice to see Archer make an appearance, and perhaps retire Castor Troy since a vendetta between the two was the reason for the movie in the first place since they knew each other a little too well,

"...in the first film, directed by John Woo, 'Sean Archer' (Travolta) is an 'FBI' agent obsessed with capturing 'Castor Troy' (Cage), a ruthless lowlife who years before accidentally killed Archer's son. Archer's single-minded pursuit of Troy has caused serious harm to his marriage, but Archer thinks the light may have appeared at the end of the tunnel when a seriously wounded Troy is captured in a bloody shootout.
"However, it turns out that Troy has planted a time bomb, with a biological payload that could destroy the entire city of Los Angeles -- and Troy isn't about to say where it is.
"The only other person who knows the bomb's location is Troy's brother, 'Pollux' (Alessandro Nivola), who is no more helpful than Castor.

“Godzilla vs Kong” director Adam Wingard will direct a reboot of John Woo’s 1997 action hit “Face/Off,” according to an individual with knowledge of the project. The original film starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage in a cat-and-mouse thriller that saw the two actors exchange roles.

Oren Uziel had been part of the equation when Paramount set up the remake last fall, but the understanding is Wingard and Barrett are starting from scratch. Despite a fairly preposterous-sounding premise, the original film was a wild ride that became the top grossing U.S. film of its Hong Kong director John Woo as it did $246 million in global ticket sales. It is easy to imagine this taking shape as a two-hander with a couple of strong male or female stars.

Praise the lord of onscreen crazy! We travel back to the era when Nicolas Cage was the biggest action star on the planet...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
For much of the past three decades, Nicolas Cage has commanded a level of devotion among fans that borders on religious fervour.
While the quality and quantity of his projects has varied wildly, his intense method acting approach – one he describes as “Nouveau Shamadic” – has resulted in some intense and brilliantly manic performances, earning him God-like status among a certain demographic of movie fans.
Taking inspiration from the witch doctors of pre-Christian civilization, Cage prepares for each and every role by working himself into a trance-like state in order to connect with the character and the work. The results are usually even crazier than the preparations.
Watching Cage in his element is something akin to a religious experience.

A peachy Face/Off remake is in the works at Paramount. No word yet if it will include white doves.
Anyone got a light? Because things are surely about to get lit on the big screen when two actors inevitably step into roles made ludicrous-iconic by Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in the visage of a new Face/Off remake.
Word of the film came early Monday evening when Deadline broke that Paramount Pictures is set on resurrecting the beloved ‘90s action classic with a new cast of characters, and the studio has tapped Oren Uziel to write the screenplay. Uziel’s previous credits promisingly include 22 Jump Street… and less promsingly The Cloverfield Paradox and Sonic the Hedgehog.

In 1997 John Woo directed a crazy action thriller called Face/Off that starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. I’m sure some of you are familiar with the movie and its ridiculous, yet entertaining concept. Well, Paramount Pictures is rebooting the film with an all new cast and they’ve hired Oren Uziel (The Cloverfield Paradox) to write the script.
In the original film, Travolta played an FBI agent named Sean Archer, “who is obsessed with catching a homicidal sociopath named Castor Troy, who is responsible for killing the fed’s son. The agent undergoes facial transplant surgery and takes the mug of his nemesis so he can be sent to prison to find out a bomb’s whereabouts and stop an attack. One of the most bizarre action movies of the 1990s (if not of all-time), John Woo’s Face/Off sees Nicolas Cage and John Travolta swap identities and lose their grip on reality. It’s now been reported by Deadline that Paramount Pictures are rebooting the 1997 thriller, with Oren Uziel behind the screenplay, Neal Moritz producing and David Permut executive producing. While there hasn’t been any casting or directing news yet, it’ll be difficult to see anyone topping the performances of Travolta and Cage in the original movie.
For those not in the know, Face/Off sees Travolta’s FBI agent Sean Archer going to remarkable lengths to capture Cage’s Castor Troy, the theatrical criminal who killed his son. For reasons best not explored, Archer takes on the face of Castor to take him down, only for Cage’s character to go steal Archer’s face and insinuate himself into his life.

Look who’s talking! John Travolta was Jimmy Fallon’s guest on “The Tonight Show” Thursday, and the two had a friendly competition to determine who is the best John Travolta of all time: Jimmy Fallon … or John Travolta.
It was a “John Travolt-Off,” if you will. And the two traded off brief impressions of classic lines and scenes from some of Travolta’s most famous movies, many of which have shown vastly different shades of the actor through his multi-decade career.
Fallon got to do a line as Tony Manero from “Saturday Night Fever” and as Vincent Vega from “Pulp Fiction,” while the “Random Travolta Generator” resulted in Travolta doing Danny Zuko from “Grease” and even the villain Sean Archer from “Face/Off.” That one was tricky, because it required Travolta to dip into a bit of a Nicolas Cage impression as well.
