I’d follow Olivia Colman to any project, and her latest sounds delightfully twisted. It was announced today that Olivia Colman and Dev Patel are set to star in Wicker, a romance set to be directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson.
“On the outskirts of a village by the sea, lives a Fisherwoman (Colman); smelly, single and perpetually ridiculed,” reads the official logline. “One day, fed up with her stuffy, small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker (Patel). In an otherwise conservative town, this unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos.” In addition to directing Wicker, Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson also wrote the script, which is adapted by Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story The Wicker Husband. Production is expected to launch next year.

Chris Rock makes a stop at the 2022 Venice Film Festival thanks to Sally Potter’s short film, “Look at Me.”
The 16-minute film stars Rock as a gala organizer who tries to rein in a stubborn drummer (Javier Bardem) ahead of the on-stage performance. Tap dancer Savion Glover also stars. “Look at Me” premieres Out of Competition at Venice.
Director Potter originally conceived the concept of the film as a short story to be featured in her 2020 film “The Roads Not Taken,” starring Bardem as a writer in the early stages of dementia. “Look at Me” was filmed in 2019 over the course of five days in London and New York. The short film is produced by Christopher Sheppard.

A not-survival-savvy millennial couple head for the country to unplug from modernity while the world goes to pot in this winning tale
This end-of-the-world comedy premiered at Sundance in January 2020 – in the Before Time – and, had the coronavirus pandemic not struck, directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s unabashedly micro-budget lark might have felt slight, contrived or negligible. Instead, given the circumstances, it feels oddly prescient, resonant and surprisingly moving, although it doesn’t quite stick the landing. Still, for the most part it manages an adept balance between satire, sincerity and sheer silliness that’s ultimately winning.
The basic donnée has childless, heterosexual millennial couple Su (Sunita Mani from Glow) and Jack (John Reynolds) yearning to disconnect for a while from all the electronic dummies we can’t stop sucking on: phones, laptops, digital assistants. A friend offers them a cabin to stay in where they can enjoy lazy hours in a rowboat,...

In another timeline, Sunita Mani is dashing between red-carpet premieres, celebrating her status as the next big thing with leading roles in a pair of fall releases. In 2020, the newly minted star of “Save Yourselves” had just finished the virtual junket for the Bleecker Street comedy when she spoke to IndieWire, going for a well-deserved walk after being cooped up and staring at a computer all day. How many times have your friends — or you — sworn to take the week off Twitter, only to come rushing back because some huge cultural event has taken place, and you just gotta see all those hot takes? That’s the basic premise of the comedy “Save Yourselves!”, only it’s not a presidential blunder or an awards-show gaffe that our heroes miss while on a digital break: It’s an alien invasion.
And while that’s ultimately a premise that feels like it would have resulted in a great 45-minute short as opposed to a mostly-good 93-minute feature, the movie does find new ways to explore its central theme and to plumb the psyches of its central characters, Jack and Su.

When writer-director team Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson conceived their sci-fi comedy “Save Yourselves!” they had no idea how timely it might become.
The film, which debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, stars Sunita Mani and John Reynolds as a couple who head to upstate New York to disconnect from their phones and find themselves. Cut off from the world, they miss the news that the planet is under attack.
The duo said they got their inspiration by asking themselves, “What’s the worst thing that could happen?”
“What’s happening in real life is worse,” Fischer told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven at the festival in January — months before the idea of self-isolation and quarantine became a commonplace phenomenon. “The slow death of the planet is more dramatic, but we went with the four-day end of world.”
Also in the interview, Fischer and Wilson shared that they...

As September comes to a close and October brings in autumnal vibes, the country (and the world for that matter) is focusing on two things: the forthcoming November election and the end of the world. Luckily, in this early edition of this week’s specialty preview, we have something that is relevant to both!
After making its world premiere at Sundance, Julie Taymor’s The Glorias is ready to disrupt the system. Ld Entertainment and Roadside Attractions will debut the civic-minded and socially aware film on Amazon Prime Video starting today — and it couldn’t be a more perfect time.
Ahead of the November election, The Glorias is based on feminist icon Gloria Steinem’s book Life on the Road. Co-written by Taymor and Sarah Ruhl the nontraditional biopic paints a portrait of one of the inspirational figures of modern history. Steinem became a prominent figure that defined era and a generation.

Bleecker Street has taken global distribution to the U.S. Dramatic Competition Sundance Film Festival comedy Save Yourselves! from writer-directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson. A summer theatrical release is being planned for the pic produced by Keshet Studios.
Pic follows Jack (John Reynolds) and Su (Sunita Mani), a hip Brooklyn couple who like many of their friends find themselves dependent on technology and unable to put down their phones. Fearing their mindless scrolling may impact their connection with each other, they seize the chance to head to an isolated cabin in the woods, vowing to unplug from the outside world for a week.
Sheltered from texts and push notifications, they are blissfully unaware when aliens attack the Earth. As strange events unfold, the couple must figure out a way back to civilization — or what’s left of it. Ben Sinclair also stars.

Save Yourselves! offers a slice of small sci-fi in a comedy world, attempting to mesh social commentary with general irreverence. Unfortunately, the laughs fade about halfway through and the world-building never blossoms into something wholly engaging. Written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, there is an energy early on that slips away as the narrative moves forward.
Jack (John Reynolds) and Su (Sunita Mani) are a stereotypical Brooklyn couple, very hip and very intellectual and very unprepared for what will happen next. Given the opportunity to use a friend’s cottage upstate, they make a spontaneous decision to escape the city, turn off all of their devices and recalibrate in the wilderness. While they’re at it, maybe they can deepen their relationship. As soon as they arrive, however, aliens decide to attack the planet, starting with the city they’ve just left. It’s quickly clear...

If you like a little rom-com in your lo-fi sci-fi or a little lo-fi sci-fi in your rom-com (take your pick), you’ll most definitely dig filmmakers Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s Save Yourselves! With a nearly irresistible premise - an alien invasion set against our potentially destructive obsession with immersive tech - and casually winning performances from Sunita Mani and John Reynolds as an urban, thirty-something couple on the brink of actual performances - Save Yourselves! scratches an extremely particular itch few moviegoers even knew they had, but once that scratch has been discovered, they’ll happily do whatever’s necessary to obtain a small measure of satisfaction. Fischer and Wilson deliver a delightfully modern-day comedy of (Internet-related) manners with authentic, honest insights into 21st-century romance...

Things that are important to Su: her collection of internet browser tabs, her trusty cell phone, her lackluster job. Things that are important to Jack: his sourdough starter, his trusty cell phone, a brand-new crystal to clutch when things are hard. The definitely millennial, decidedly Brooklyn, and vaguely hipster couple are as “very online” and plugged in as anyone, but just how connected are they?
Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s amiable “Save Yourselves!” knowingly digs deep into the long-time couple’s obvious ennui — cradling their iPhones like babies, they’re prone to announcing they want to be “better people,” which maybe involves, like, I dunno, going vegetarian again? — and pulls out And while it doesn’t quite stick the landing, the zippy journey there is fun enough to justify the winding road there..
Convinced — and rightly so — that their relatable obsessions with their phones and their laptops and...

It’s hard to believe that another Sundance Film Festival is upon us, but here we are. Tomorrow, the festivities kick off in Park City, and Sundance will run through Sunday, February 2nd, 2020. Daily Dead will once again be in attendance and this year’s slate of genre offerings looks to mix things up in ways we haven’t seen before. Just in terms of horror, sci-fi, and darkly comedic stories being presented at Sundance in 2020, four are helmed by women, five directors are making their feature film directorial debuts here, and there a variety of countries being represented this year at Sundance on the genre front as well, including the UK, Indonesia, Guatemala, France, Australia, Canada, and Spain.
Normally, I’d try to pick the films I was the most excited about, but really, I’m excited about all of them, because getting to discover new cinematic stories and...
