The Netflix book adaptation and political thriller The Night Agent has had fans in a craze since its premiere—gradually becoming a cultural phenomenon. And the main star, Gabriel Basso, has fans swooning over him for his incredible portrayal of Peter Sutherland.
Like a judgment call, taking on a role in a movie or TV show can either make or break an actor’s career. And sometimes, even legendary actors make the wrong call and turn down incredible roles. That was not the case for Basso. From the moment he was considered for the role, he knew he couldn’t say no for one particular reason.

This post contains spoilers for "The Night Agent," the novel and the TV series.
Before "The Night Agent" arrived on Netflix, it was sitting on shelves at Barnes & Noble. The 2023 political thriller series is an adaptation of Matthew Quirk's eponymous 2019 novel. A former journalist, Quirk writes breezy paperback thrillers in the Tom Clancy mold. "The Night Agent" is no different — a low-ranking FBI agent answers a call from a woman who escaped an assassin and together they come across a conspiracy within the White House.
That said, Netflix's "The Night Agent" is a very loose adaptation, as it uses the novel's premise and main characters to tell a different story. The novel's core characters — Agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), and White House Chief of Staff Diane Farr (Hong Chau) — are in the series. However, it also invents many new characters to fill out the supporting cast.

Spoilers for "The Night Agent" follow.
"The Night Agent" proved to be a success for Netflix, so it's no surprise the platform has renewed the political thriller for a second season. Adapted from a novel by Matthew Quirk, "The Night Agent" follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso). He works in the White House's basement, and every shift, he sits next to a phone, waiting for calls from "Night Action" agents in case of an emergency. Peter's first call comes from Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a niece of two Night Action agents. Rose narrowly escaped a home invasion that claimed her aunt and uncle's lives; she and Peter get thrown into a conspiracy that goes up to the Oval Office.
Quirk's novel was a standalone story, but the series had a more open ending — the creators were aware more seasons were on the table. After preventing the assassination of President...

Previously, in the fifth episode of “The Night Agent,” Peter and Rose came to the conclusion that Zadar was not at all responsible for the metro bombing from last year; rather, the Vice President orchestrated it with the aid of Gordon Wick, the CEO of Turn Lake Industries, who also happened to be Dale and Ellen’s employer. Peter alerted Diane Farr, the Chief of Staff, of all the facts without hesitation, and she directed them to come and report to the White House right away. Meanwhile, Maddie Redfield made a move to start a relationship with her teacher. But it turned out that the metro bomber from the previous year had planned everything from the beginning to lure Maddie into his trap. The bomber, who was also the roommate of the art teacher, showed up and killed the teacher, and carried Maddie away to take her hostage at a more covert location.

In the previous episode of “The Night Agent,” Peter and Rose visited an engineer who had previously worked with the Campbells. It turned out to be an old woman who was a Night Agent and was now attempting to flee her enemies by going into hiding. She ultimately ran into Rose and Peter, but Dale and Ellen then murdered her. The Vice President paid a visit to his daughter’s dorm, but it was clear that Maddie wasn’t really pleased to see her father. Rose hacked into all the Cc cameras in the cafeteria above the metro line and determined from the previous year’s footage that Arrington was sitting there and speaking into her mic. Perhaps she was there to defend the vice president or Maddie Redfield from the bombing.

The Night Agent follows FBI Agent Peter Sutherland, Gabriel Basso, as he dives headfirst into a conspiracy of a Russian mole among government officials and is put in charge of protecting cybersecurity expert Rose Larkin, Luciane Buchanan, after her family is murdered.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Basso and Buchanan revealed how they created the chemistry before shooting the show.
“We went bungee jumping,” Buchanan said.
“Yeah, the first day – so I was driving up to Vancouver and I called her before we had officially met, and I just asked her if she wanted to go bungee jumping so I think it was bonding through trauma,” Basso joked.
Buchanan continued, “I said no like three times and I was like, ‘ok, fine’ and like the whole time we drove to Whistler and Vancouver I was not listening to anything you were saying I was just like, ‘I’m going to jump off a bridge.

Plot: A sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centering on a low-level FBI Agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings — until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast-moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.

It feels like a streaming service debuts a new espionage story every few weeks. Some try to upend convention while others stick frustratingly close to formula, but few seem to break outside the box to do something unique with the genre. Previously in episode 1 of “The Night Agent,” we met our protagonist Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent who now works in the White House’s confidential services, and Rose Larkin, whose uncle and aunt had just been murdered in their house. After the event, Rose learned that her uncle and aunt were actually part of an intelligence agency rather than simply a regular married couple. The assassins who killed them were now seeking Rose, who is now under the complete control of Diane Farr, the President’s chief of Staff. Let’s see how ‘far’ we can trust Diane Farr.

There’s an ample supply of criminal thrillers on streaming services the world over, mostly on Netflix. Some crime thrillers focus on the same old homicides, illegal drug trafficking, or some political aspect of it, while others highlight intelligence flaws, but most of them fall short on the exhilarating part. Like me, many people prefer movies over television shows since the latter keep dragging out the story without keeping up the thrill. All a thriller has to do is pique our interest and give us a reason to be intrigued enough to watch the upcoming episodes. “The Night Agent,” a brand-new spy thriller from Netflix, pulls this off. This is a new, pulpy series that will keep you glued to the screen. Shawn Ryan’s “The Night Agent,” which is based on Matthew Quirk’s book of the same name, centers on FBI agent Peter Sutherland, who prevented a metro bombing.

Netflix's newest original series, "The Night Agent," is based on the 2019 novel by Matthew Quirk. A "24" esque thriller, both political and action-oriented, the show centers on FBI Agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) whose father was accused of selling state secrets to the Russian government. Unfortunately, the stench has never left his son, not even after Peter foiled a terrorist attack on Washington DC's metro train. He's currently stuck in a dead-end job as a "Night Agent," — he has to sit at a desk in the White House basement next to a phone that never rings. Until one day, it does.
Former tech CEO Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) calls Peter after narrowly escaping assassins who killed her aunt and uncle. Unbeknownst to her, they were FBI assets in an active investigation. Unsure who to trust, Peter must keep Rose alive and unravel a conspiracy that originates inside the White House.

For all the things Amazon does as a streaming platform that make very little sense to me, I’ve always thought the service does a good job adapting airplane or beach novels for TV, delivering generally fast-moving genre pieces for an audience pre-disposed to devour them. Some (Bosch) have been good, some (Reacher) have been decently true to the spirit of the source material, and even the ones that were awful at least played directly to their target audience (please stop sending me DMs, Terminal List fans). All felt like reasonable plays for a company that, in its free time, has been known to sell books on the side.
Netflix doesn’t have that same business model, but Shawn Ryan’s adaptation of Matthew Quirk’s novel The Night Agent still feels like an Amazon-style show. It’s less textured and grounded than Bosch and its main character isn’t...

The Night Agent is a series created by Shawn Ryan starring Gabriel Basso. It is based on the novel by Matthew Quirk.
A call, an FBI agent and a conspiracy: the elements of the thriller are defined in just ten minutes.
About the Series
And the fact is that The Night Agent is a series that is not in the least misleading: a protagonist dedicated to good and an action script structure that jumps from one scene to another in a series that knows which strings to pluck and simply acts accordingly.
Absolutely nothing bad, but nothing that will be surprising either. A series with the tension of a John Grisham (without lawyers) in literature, close to Jack Ryan, although more devoted to intrigue and suspense than to action.
The Hollywood industry draws on what it knows best, from the well-executed suspense thriller, with its rhythm, the structured script, sometimes vacuous,...

“My orders are to protect you with my life,” vows earnest FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) to terrified murder witness Rose Larkin before they go on the run from assassins in this political thriller. Faster than you can count to Three Days of the Condor, she’s got his back too. The pair are thrown together in the series’ gripping premiere. She’d been given the number by her aunt and uncle during a home invasion. Peter’s guidance in Rose’s ear helps her survive. Her relatives do not — and she’s shocked to learn they were undercover operatives. “Peter’s more an old-school rule follower, Rose is a new-tech rule breaker,” says executive producer Shawn Ryan, master of character-driven actioners such as The Shield...

If you're looking for something new to stream on Netflix after The Recruit, you might be interested in The Night Agent.
The new drama has a compelling hook that should be enough to get viewers to check out at least the first episode when it drops.
All episodes of The Night Agent will stream on Netflix on March 23, 2023.
