Could an upset be brewing on Season 21 of “American Idol”? All year fans have been forecasting Iam Tongi would take home the top prize, but he may not be the sure bet we’ve assumed. This season closely resembles a similar lineup up finalists from Season 17 when 18-year old country crooner Laine Hardy took down fan favorite Alejandro Aranda, who, like Iam, had become a viral sensation since his first audition.
This time around it’s 18-year old Mississippi native Colin Stough who has progressively grown his fanbase each week, delivering honky-tonk renditions of some of music’s most popular tunes. Like Laine, he was barely a blip on viewers’ radar in early rounds, but as judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie have pointed out, his star continues to rise.

When Caleb Kennedy auditions for the “American Idol” judges during Sunday’s fourth episode, he chooses to perform his original song, titled “Nowhere.” The only problem? He’s only written the first verse and hasn’t yet completed it. “I’ll help you right now,” Luke Bryan tells the 16-year-old student from Roebuck, Sc. He’s not the only judge impressed by Caleb’s song-writing abilities, as Katy Perry chimes in, “You better finish that song ‘Nowhere’ because that song is gonna take you somewhere.” Watch the “American Idol” sneak peek video above. The full episode airs March 7 on ABC.

Season 17 of “American Idol” ended on May 19. Will the new winner enjoy more success than the 2018 champion, Maddie Poppe? After all, she didn’t even get a chance to perform on this year’s finale despite releasing her first album, “Whirlwind,” just two days prior. What a contrast to the early days of the show, when the previous season’s winner was always showcased on the episode that unveiled the new winner of the franchise.

Thanks to the “American Idol” judges using their save, two women still remain in the Top 5 of Season 17: Laci Kaye Booth and Madison VanDenburg. What’s a reality show without some controversy? Sunday’s Top 20 episode of “American Idol,” during which 10 contestants were paired with celebrity artists, offered a doozy. According the social media jury, a vocal flub made by singer Elle King, the daughter of comic actor Rob Schneider whose own big hit is “Ex’s and Oh’s,” might have contributed to ex-ing out Atlanta semi-finalist Shawn Robinson‘s chances to continue on the show.
Robinson admitted he did have some reservations about their duet selection, a golden oldie that was originally a mid-tempo 1969 signature tune for Creedence Clearwater Revival that was famously turned into a raucus 1971 R&B hit by Ike and Tina Turner. He wanted to do the slower version and got his way, but it barely mattered when King seemed to accidentally sing the first verse twice on-air and might have cause a rattled Shawn, 22, to come in too soon.

ABC’s inaugural “American Idol” season comes to a close on May 21. But for Disney’s powerful marketing machine, to use a term ripped from the hit reality show, the “journey” is just beginning.
The singing competition, which studio executives recently renewed amid ratings momentum, is set to launch a promotional assault for the show’s remaining finalists. And Disney plans to support the winning singers using the full breadth of its $150 billion empire, including theme parks, television networks and music divisions. There’s everything but a chorus of “Star Wars” Imperial stormtroopers.
Disney, known for its acumen in turning out lucrative franchises, wants to bring the sort of firepower that previous seasons were either missing or neglected. Fox’s track record in producing hit acts among the winners varied dramatically during “Idol’s” 15 seasons on the network, with only a handful of names like Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson breaking into the big time.

The “American Idol” reboot is quickly drawing to a close, eliminating two contestants on Sunday night (May 13) and leaving the top three — Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Maddie Poppe and Gabby Barrett — to duke it out next week for a two-night finale. Leaving the ABC show tonight were Cade Foehner and Michael J. Woodward.
The night was divided into two parts: for the first hour, the five finalists were each tasked with singing a Carrie Underwood song — the season 4 winner was the celebrity mentor for the week — and for the second half, song choices were catered to Mother’s Day.
Where Poppe shined was with her second performance, “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys. Though she was last to take the stage, which could have negatively impacted her vote, her consistently adventurous song choices have clearly resonated with audiences.

Seven more spots are up for grabs in the American Idol season 16 Top 14 as the second half of the Top 24 hits the stage, performing for a chance to earn America's vote when the live shows begin. It remains to be seen, however, exactly how much trust the reboot will put in viewers.
Back in the original final season, the judges moved four favorites -- Dalton Rapattoni, Olivia Rox, La'Porsha Renae and eventual winner Trent Harmon -- straight through before we sorted through the scrap heap to round out the Top 10 -- or, as I referred to it, handing out orange vests and ordering us to pick up most of the trash from the side of the highway.

The reboot of American Idol is down to its Top 24, but even with a new network and new judges, it appears that season 16 is repeating a troubling trend introduced in the previous final season: they don't trust us.
This is the point in seasons of yore when America would traditionally take over the judging process, deciding if we wanted to reward potential, punish subpar performances or, you know, vote for the worst. But in season 15, audiences didn't get a voice until voting on two wildcards to round out the Top 10. And no disrespect to Trent Harmon, but it's not like all that extra hand holding helped produce a Grammy-winning chart-topper.

"American Idol" crowned its latest -- and last, for now -- winner on Thursday night, with 25-year-old Trent Harmon walking away with the coveted season 15 title. But Harmon isn't the only one who scored big in the competition: Both he and "Idol" runner-up La'Porsha Renae have landed record deals.
Billboard reports that Harmon has been signed to 19/Big Machine Records, and will record a country album. If that sounds slightly confusing, given that Harmon broke out on "Idol" with a cover of Sia's "Chandelier" and will release the soulful single "Falling" as his first post-"Idol" output, Big Machine Label Group founder and CEO Scott Borchetta said that Harmon's album would be an unusual mashup of styles.
According to Billboard, "Borchetta told reporters he envisions Harmon's debut as 'for lack of a better term, that Justin Timberlake country record. Justin ain't going to make it, so we are.'"

Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?
