“You don’t get the burn you want; you get the burn you need,” a burner friend told me this when I told him I was headed to Black Rock City for the first time.
We drove into the dusty desert last Sunday, our bags packed with outfits, baby wipes, dust masks and sunblock for our weeklong escapade to Black Rock City. I was ready to surrender, to let go of my phone and internet connection and daily concerns about whether I’d make a story deadline or if the...

The search for legendary creatures may not be recognized as a legitimate science, but even the harshest critics of cryptozoology have to admit that it’s fun to imagine that there might still be a little bit of magic hidden in the modern world. From Sasquatch to the Loch Ness Monster, these mythical beasts have been inspiring stories for centuries, so it makes sense that they’d eventually show up in video games.
And with so many digital cryptids to choose from (you’d be surprised with how many games manage to sneak in a Mothman reference), we’ve decided to highlight six of the most memorable Cryptid appearances in gaming. After all, there’s nothing like a good monster hunt, and I think cryptozoology is criminally underutilized when it comes to genre storytelling – especially when it comes to videogames.

Ready to fall in love with a cuddly little Chupacabra? Because you will if you watch Netflix’s new film “Chupa.”
“Chupa” stars Evan Whitten as Alex, a kid living in the United States whose mom sends him to visit his grandfather (Demián Bichir) in Mexico for spring break. (This is in the early 1990s.) While in Mexico, he befriends a Chupacabra – an ancient creature from Mexican folklore, who he dubs Chupa. Together, he and his cousins hide Chupa and outwit a nefarious operative trying to capture the creature for use in the biomedical field and attempt to return Chupa to his family.
It’s a terrific little movie, clearly indebted to the Amblin movies of the 1980s and early 1990s, with some fun performances and an absolutely adorable creature in Chupa.

If a human is lost, there are certainly ways and means to search for them. But if an animal is lost, unless it is a domesticated one, no one is going to worry about it. “Chupa” is about a mythical creature that Quinn believes to be of a lot of value. Therefore, right at the beginning of the film, you find him with his workers searching the area where he had noticed the legendary creature, the Chupacabra. But in an attempt to get hold of the animal, he hurts it. The mother Chupacabra leaves Chupa hidden in a certain place and runs, diverting the attention of Quinn and his associates. Chupa, thus, is safe but all alone with no one to take care of him.

“Chupa” is a Netflix movie directed by Jonas Cuaron and released on April 7, 2023. Jonas Cuaron is the son of Alfonso Cuaron, a Mexican filmmaker who has won Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Cinematography Oscars. “Chupa” is a heartwarming tale of Alejandro, aka Alex (Evan Whitten), who is going through grief because of the death of his father, who died of cancer, and Chupa, or the mythical creature Chupacabra, who, due to the fault of man, has been displaced from his family. Alex lives in Kansas City and studies at Lakewood Middle School, where he doesn’t interact with any of his classmates but engages himself in playing a game on the Game Boy, for which he is called weird and teased with words like ‘Taquito.’ Alex feels out of place and isn’t able to brave this situation at school. Nevertheless, his mother offers him a trip to...

Spanish-speaking viewers have pointed out an unfortunate translation issue with Netflix’s new family adventure film, Chupa.
The film, which is set to be released by the streaming service on 7 April, is about a mysterious chupacabra – inspired by a mythical creature in South American folklore that sucked the blood of goats. It was written and directed by Jonás Cuarón, son of Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón.
Chupa follows Alex, a young boy from Kansas City who visits Mexico to meet his family. While visiting his grandfather’s ranch, he befriends a baby chupacabra, which he calls Chupa.
Spanish-speaking social media users have pointed out that “chupa” literally means “suck” or “to suck”.
The trailer actually addresses the word’s meaning, with one character pointing out that Alex’s nickname for the chupacabra means “sucker”, suggesting it could be interpreted as “bad”. Alex’s dad says he likes the nickname.
However, others...

Director Jonás Cuarón reimagines the terrifying mythical beast as a cute and furry little creature in Netflix’s Chupa. The two-minute trailer for the family-friendly adventure confirms this incredibly adorable baby chupacabra looks nothing like a goat-killing, nightmare-inducing monster.
“I was a small kid when the legend started. When the idea came of turning [the myth] on its head and using it to tell a family adventure, I was immediately excited,” said Cuarón in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “I’ve always been a huge fan of E.T. and believe that stories like that are so powerful because they play on the idea of kids being misunderstood by adults. Chupa might be a monster but he’s the only one that truly understands what Alex is going through. The bond between a boy and a creature is so pure, like with a pet, it transcends language.”
