Above: NasirIndian filmmaker Arun Karthick’s filmography revels in the realm of the senses with its languid, meditative focus on landscapes (both natural and urban), still life, silence, and quotidian existence. His films don’t seem to search for the extraordinary within the ordinary; for him, beauty—and terror—exists in the ordinary itself. These themes are touched upon in his first short film, The Backwaters (2010), in which a boatman recalls the story of a young girl to his passenger in a wordless flashback executed through the to-and-fro movement of the boat along the backwaters of the south Indian state of Kerala. The girl, when we first see her, looks hopeful and happy as she embarks on a journey to meet someone. On her return journey, she is disheveled and distraught; perhaps she has been abused. And these actions are repeated day after day. Her inner turmoil and change of...

ReviewThe Indie filmmaker, Arun Karthick, deftly dodges stereotypes of victimhood that occur too often when cinema talks about oppression.Bharathy SingaravelYouTube ScreengrabArun Karthick’s second Tamil film, Nasir premiered in India on June 6 as a part of Mami’s online 'We Are One: A Global Film Festival'. It comes just months after the anti-Muslim pogroms in North East Delhi. In these times of heightened Islamophobia, when Muslims are reduced to statistics, to just a faceless community under siege, Karthick is determined to re-establish the individual’s singularity. The film stuns because there is no drama, no strident declarations. There’s just a camera following Nasir (played by Koumarane Valavane) around as he gets through his day as a salesman in a sari shop. He romances his wife, holds his co-workers spellbound with his poetry, worries about chit-funds and a young relative with disabilities who is dependent on him. The Indie filmmaker,...

The understated, deeply humane approach director Arun Karthick takes in addressing the heinous anti-Muslim rhetoric infecting Indian politics today proves far more powerful than any larger-scale drama one can imagine. “ Set over the course of one day in Karthick’s hometown of Coimbatore in western Tamil Nadu, the story is a slice-of-life look at a Muslim fabric shop salesman steeped in an ever more toxic atmosphere of Hindu nationalism. Beautifully shot in a 4:3 ratio with a Super 16mm lens to get a notable depth of saturated color, “Nasir” is a sleeper gem deserving of significant festival play.
Karthick employs such a delicate structure, focusing on the mundanity of daily life while carefully introducing discordant elements, that the brutal finale comes as a shock even though he’s been building up to this practically from the beginning. He creates an atmosphere of mutual support and affection between Nasir (theater director...

Arun Karthick’s Tiger Competition-selected feature “Nasir” premiered at the 2020 International Film Festival Rotterdam. The self-taught Tamil filmmaker had competed in Iffr before; he debuted his first feature “The Strange Case of Shiva” in Iffr 2015. This year, “Nasir” won the Netpac Award for Best Asian film premiering at the festival.
“Nasir” follows the story of its namesake, Nasir (Koumarane Valavane) – a devout Muslim textiles salesman who lives within the ghettos of Coimbatore, India. On the outset, Nasir’s life seems miserable. He lives without running water; his boss and clientele walk all over him; his mother desperately needs healthcare; and, to top it all off, his only pillar of support — his wife — must leave town for several days. The artistic director reflects on this year’s festival.

All three Asian entries in this year’s Tiger Competition walk away with something to take home. First, hailing from Hangzhou, Chinese filmmaker Zheng Lu Xinyuan reaps the prestigious Tiger Award at the 49th International Film Festival Rotterdam with her debut feature, “The Cloud in Her Room.” The existential black and white film about love, loneliness, and loss subsequently earns a prize of €40,000 to be divided between filmmaker and producer. On the other hand, South Korean crime-thriller “Beasts Clawing at Straws” by Kim Young-hoon wins the Special Jury Award and €10,000. The star-studded first feature (featuring Jeon Do-yeon and Jung Woo-sung) similarly earned praise for its precise craftmanship. Last but not least, Tamil filmmaker Arun Karthick takes home the Netpac Award for best Asian world premiere of Iffr 2020 with his second feature, “Nasir.”

Here’s a film for which the label “low-key” feels particularly misleading, one whose power resides in its simplicity, in its ability to conjure grace out of a beguilingly ordinary tale. Nasir, Indian writer-director Arun Karthick’s sophomore feature, is a film of quiet pleasures and unassuming wonders. It follows a day in the life of the salesman it is named after, and unspools at his becalmed and contemplative pace. It opens with the sound of a morning prayer and retains that early morning dream-like aura, locking you in a state of reverie and then shattering it in a finale of startling violence.

Adil Hussain will headline the cast of Vijay Jayapal’s psychological horror drama “Nirvana Inn,” one of the 29 projects selected for the Busan Asian Project Market.
Hussain won best actor at Norway’s Amanda awards for “What Will People Say,” and the film is the country’s entry to the Oscars foreign-language category. Also featuring in the cast of the Hindi-language film are Rajshri Deshpande (“Sexy Durga”) and Sandhya Mridul (“Angry Indian Goddesses”).
Joining India’s Stray Factory as co-producers are Magic Hour Films (India/Singapore), Still Whinging (Australia) and Indian outfits Uncombed Buddha and Harman Ventures.
The project has now realized 75% of its $400,000 budget and is looking for post-production support in Busan.
“Nirvana Inn” will follow a boatman who capsizes his boat, killing all his passengers, but he survives. Wracked with guilt, he flees and becomes the caretaker of a Himalayan resort and is shocked to see his victims checking in.

Dubai Film Market is introducing a selection of Indian projects for the first time this year through a partnership with Europe’s Pjlf Three Rivers Residency.
The five projects are being scripted by hot new talents such as Kanu Behl, whose debut feature Titli premiered at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard in 2014, and Raj Rishi More, whose project is being produced by The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra.
The Three Rivers residency provides writer-directors with a month-long distraction-free space to work on their scripts in the Italian countryside, with the help of an expert mentor, before presenting their projects at Diff. Although focusing on Indian projects in its first year, the organisers hope to open the programme to international writer-directors, including those from the Arab world, from next year.
“We feel writers sometimes need a much more concentrated period to hone their ideas and get away from all the distractions of a day job and daily life,” said producer...
