As part of its ongoing mission to promote Latinx civil and human rights, the National Hispanic Media Coalition is releasing its first-ever media guide for storytellers in the entertainment industry.
“The media guide is an analysis for the entertainment industry to understand our community,” Nhmc president and CEO Brenda Victoria Castillo tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that the resource, which is available for free online, will be continually updated to reflect as the Latinx community evolves.
To wit: The guide opens with an explanation of Latino/a/x/e nomenclature, as well as their differentiation from the “Hispanic” identity. Nhmc’s guide uses mostly “Latinx” throughout because of its gender neutrality, but advises people to ask individuals their preferred descriptors.
The guide calls for fewer stereotypical depictions of Latinx characters – “cholos,” service roles, no or limited dialogue – and more that reflect the community’s expansive range: Latinx in science fiction and fantasy; multiracial,...

It’s great to see the always terrific Raúl Castillo in a lead role, bringing both despair and tenacious grit to a luckless blue-collar father whose dreams of liquidity are shattered by a cryptocurrency scam. Cutter Hodierne’s thriller about three financial crime victims who go after the man responsible, Cold Wallet, doesn’t always make the tech talk crackle or exactly nail the tone he appears to be going for, of home invasion tension streaked with dark humor. But solid performances and a pulpy scenario that keeps you guessing make this a suspenseful watch.
While it’s clear that director Hodierne and screenwriter John Hibey know the crypto world, your mileage may vary depending on familiarity with meme stocks and doxing, securities fraud and blockchain. I confess it’s all Greek to me. Films like Dumb Money took a more playful route to the little-guy investor bucking against capitalist chicanery,...

Netflix viewing figures might be a mostly meaningless mess, but they're getting a little more transparent. They also provide a fascinating picture of global viewing habits that give us a real-time look at how audiences are responding to the deluge of media being funneled directly into their collective visual cortex.
In an age where streaming has truly upended the movie industry, leaving studios scrambling to catch up with the modern paradigm, getting a look under the hood is always interesting. For instance, nobody liked "The Snowman" when it was released back in 2017, but apparently, we all lapped it up when it hit Netflix this year. What does that say about what we expect from our home entertainment? Has streaming lowered all our standards? Perhaps we were always this way ...
The point is, there's clearly something to be learned in an age where we all have access to viewing metrics in real time.

Expanded to four full days, Madrid’s Iberseries & Platino Industria, a joint venture of the Fundación Secuoya and Egeda, Spain’s large rights collection society, opens its doors for its third edition on Tuesday Oct. 3, running all week at Madrid’s Matadero.
I & IP is a market, thanks to its Iberscreenings showcase, and ever more a co-pro forum as well as a massive financing emporium with 149 (sic) projects being pitched behind closed doors at Platforms, Producers Pitch sessions.
The event takes place post-peak TV, however, with a new sense of realism and calculation flooding the world’s TV and film industries. A now robust conference strand looks set to debate key issues and market trends.
Tow weeks out from the event, Variety sat down with Iberseries director Samuel Castro of the Grupo Secuoya and Adriana Castillo, who heads up Egeda’s office in Mexico, to check out their take on...

Vienna-based sales agent Square Eyes has boarded Tana Gilbert’s feature debut “Malqueridas” ahead of its world premiere as part of Venice’s International Critics’ Week. The documentary was shot entirely on clandestine cell phones by the inmates of a women’s prison in Chile.
” ‘Malqueridas’ forms a collective memory of this often abandoned community, and shows how these mothers – and their love – withstand the trials of life in jail, far from family and loved ones,” according to a press statement. “In prison, they find affection in other partners who share their situation as mutual support among these women becomes a form of resistance and empowerment.”
Gilbert stated: “ ‘Malqueridas’ has an extensive team of very talented and hard-working people who have been working on this film for seven years. The relationship we built with all the women who participated has transformed us forever. Cinema allows us to open dialogues between human groups,...

Wyoming has the fewest residents among all U.S. states, but for a few hours on July 14, its population swelled considerably.
On that day, beauty influencer Jeffree Star drew a record-breaking crowd for the grand opening of a brick-and-mortar shop in Casper. The so-called “Jeffree Star Store” sells a unique combination of products: makeup and meat.
Star’s fans came from far and wide to check out the eclectic new store. “We came all the way from Bentonville, Arkansas — 14, 15 hours from here,” attendee Liset Garcia told Oil City News. “I’ve followed Jeffree Star since he was a YouTuber and went through my middle school and high school years being emo because of him.” A fan named Odessa Castillo told Business Insider that she drove from Wisconsin to catch the opening. “Jeffree means everything to me,” Castillo said.
According to Business Insider, some attendees waited over 12 hours for their chance to enter the store.

Miami’s legion of film fans get an extra treat this week via the expanded ninth edition of the Miami Film Festival Gems. The carefully curated, week-long festival (under the aegis of Miami Dade College) unspools Nov. 3-10 at Miami’s historic Tower Theater, showcasing some of the most lauded fall festival entrants along with five international Oscar submissions.
On the docket are awards contenders, from opener “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” to closing night’s “The Fabelmans,” from Steven Spielberg. Sarah Polley’s buzzed about “Women Talking” is a centerpiece presentation; Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” is the other.
Narrowing down programming choices is never easy, says interim executive director Nicolas Calzada, but the festival’s aim is clear- cut and provides “an advance taste of the best films of the year that have strong chances at awards consideration.” Formerly a weekend, Miami Gems is now a week,...
