Within the past week, Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo”) lost and then regained her first place position on our Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress Emmy odds chart. She is being given a run for her money by small screen newcomer Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”), who maintained general frontrunner status from May 9-12 and is still our experts’ pick to win, as has been the case since May 3.
A week ago, Reis was also our editors’ predicted winner, but they have since gravitated back toward Leigh. Based on the forecasts of 2,400+ Gold Derby users, both women currently have 6/1 odds in their race, with their closest competitor being Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”) at 15/2.
The temporary toppling of Leigh occurred three weeks after “Shōgun” overtook “Fargo” in the Best Limited Series race. Since then, the consensus among our readers has been that the latter show’s best shot...

Fans of the ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary are up in arms after the network took another break from airing the show. Viewers are demanding that ABC stop with the “shenanigans” and get back to a regular schedule. Keep reading to see when you can expect Abbott Elementary to return to TV.
Quinta Brunson Teases Two Good Final Episodes
There are still two more episodes left in Season 3 of Abbott Elementary. Like many other shows, it has gone on a brief hiatus and will be airing a shorter season than normal. This is due to the strikes in Hollywood last year that put a pause on writing and filming.
Approximately three weeks ago, an Instagram account for the beloved comedy show announced that it would be taking a break. The photo shared was a calendar marked “No School” on April 24.

Despite there being far too many firsts still left to achieve, Black creators have indelibly left their mark on the television landscape for decades.
Just think of names like Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Lee Daniels (“Empire”), and Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), whose series went on to become credited for reviving network television, or writers like Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Donald Glover (“Atlanta”), and Lena Waithe (“The Chi”), who have been able to build their own sort of TV empire with the shows they have written and/or produced.
Even networks like BET, Starz, and MTV still run off of the creative ingenuity of executive producers like Tyler Perry (“Sistas”), Courtney A. Kemp (“Power”), Mona Scott-Young (“Love and Hip Hop”), and even RuPaul (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”).
Often when retelling the story of Black representation on television, there is first acknowledgment of how the writers rooms initially were not reflective of what their casts looked like.

The 2023 Emmy Awards finally took place on Monday night, with series like The Bear, Beef and Succession winning big.

The National Active Members of the Television Academy voted on the awards from August 18 to August 28, 2023.
Succession walked away with seven wins for its final season, including Best Drama and recognition for actors Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen. The show also received awards for Best Directing for a Drama Series for Mark Mylod and Best Writing for a Drama Series for Jesse Armstrong.

Way back in (checks notes) July last year, we reported on the Emmy nominations, noting that the strikes could delay it. Welp, delay it they did, and the 2023 ceremony has just happened in Los Angeles on Monday night. The ceremony, hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson, had little reference to the strikes, but did dig back into TV history given that it was the 75th ceremony. Recent history, though, was more on voters' minds as Beef, Succession and The Bear continued their small screen awards domination.
Succession and The Bear nabbed six trophies each across acting, directing and writing categories, while Beef took home five. Other winners included Jennifer Coolidge (for The White Lotus) and Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story's Niecy Nash-Betts.
Here are the main winners…

Before the Golden Globes nominations announcement officially kicked off a few minutes past the totally-not-ungodly hour of 5 a.m. Pacific, Dick Clark Productions executive vp television Barry Adelman was heard reviewing Globes president Helen Hoehne’s teleprompter copy, murmuring the phrase “most culturally diverse major awards body” over and over again.
Diversity — or the lack thereof among its voting body — was what led to the awards show losing its 2022 telecast and to the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association this summer. The Globes’ new owners — Dcp and Eldridge (Dcp is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter) — want to emphasize that the awards organization has turned over a new leaf. “This has been a year of exciting change for the Golden Globes,” Hoehne said in her opening remarks, invoking the language Adelman reviewed earlier. “Not only...

Whenever people find out what I do for a living lately, it’s the first thing out of their mouth. And I never have a good answer for them.
“Why are shows like ‘The Bear,” “Barry” and “Atlanta” contending at the Emmys in comedy series?
It’s a perfectly good question that has no single accurate response. But it isn’t for lack of trying. It’s the same conundrum that I had when “The Bear” in particular was nominated for a bunch of Golden Globes last January. I’ve watched both seasons of the show closely over the past several weeks, checking to see if maybe there was just something I’d been missing. I found a couple of moments that were worth a modest chuckle – such as the time Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) had only a vague notion of what Ups was until reminded by Sydney (Ayo Edebiri). But in the main,...

Lisa Ann Walter is hoping for a first-ever Emmy bid as season two of “Abbott Elementary” looks to up its awards success from the first outing, which won three Emmys. ABC’s mockumentary season comes from multi-hyphenate Quinta Brunson, who stars in the show as well as creates it, writes it, and produces it. It follows a group of public school teachers who work in one of the worst schools in the country but their love for teaching makes them stay to try and better the school and its students. The show is full of wonderful comedic performances, not least from “The Parent Trap” star Walter.
Walter plays second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti, who is close with Sheryl Lee Ralph‘s Barbara. Both teachers are veterans at Abbott Elementary, while some of Melissa’s connections outside of school are deemed questionable. Walter has a lot of fun as Melissa, who has...

“What We Do in the Shadows” will soon come screeching back to our TV screens as season five will premiere next month on July 13. But before that, season four will hope to have secured some well-earned Emmy nominations. The mockumentary vampire comedy show was created by Jermaine Clement and is based on his and Taika Waititi‘s 2014 film of the same name. It follows four vampires living together in modern-day New York City — Matt Berry‘s Laszlo, Kayvan Novak‘s Nandor, Natasia Demetriou‘s Nadja, and Mark Proksch‘s Colin Robinson. But while the vampires are the stars of the show, the unsung hero is Harvey Guillén as Nandor’s familiar, Guillermo.
Guillermo has hoped to be made into a vampire since season one but instead has remained his master’s long-suffering familiar. While the vampire actors get to hilariously ham it up as people from different time periods, Guillén is the grounding factor.

This story about Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Tyler James Williams and “Abbott Elementary” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
If Quinta Brunson is the heart of “Abbott Elementary,” the Emmy-winning ABC comedy she exec-produces, writes and stars in, the show’s supporting cast is its soul. Set in a struggling Philadelphia public school, the series has been praised for its realistic depiction of America’s education system, while also finding humor and hope hiding in plain sight.
The show’s first two seasons worked hard to elucidate the plight of the American schoolteacher, but that’s far from the only lesson that “Abbott Elementary” has been serving up to viewers. Forget about English, say “see you later” to math, because according to its cast, the series is all about chemistry.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards race for TV comedy actress appears to be a close battle between red-hot rookie contender Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and defending champ Jean Smart (“Hacks”), who are currently 1-2 in our combined odds. But if support is more evenly split between the two actors than we might be expecting, you shouldn’t be surprised if the person lurking in third place, “Dead to Me’s” Christina Applegate, nabs the coveted statuette on Sunday.
Despite not being the odds-on favorite, Smart, as the incumbent champ, is still the smartest (sorry) bet on paper. No one loves returning to the well more than the SAG Awards, in whose 28-year history there have been six instances of someone bagging at least two consecutive trophies in this category. The “Hacks” star has demonstrated continued strength following last year’s guild triumph, prevailing a second time for the HBO Max...

Sheryl Lee Ralph just reminded football fans that she is a dreamgirl in every sense of the word! Just minutes before the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles faced off at Super Bowl Lvii on Feb. 12, the 66-year-old "Abbott Elementary" star delivered a stunning performance of "Lift Every Voice and Sing," often referred to as the Black national anthem, during the game's opening ceremony.
Shining in all red, Ralph was joined by a powerful choir, all wearing head-to-toe white. Ralph's performance was followed by Chris Stapleton, who sang the national anthem, and Babyface, who delivered a beautiful rendition of "America the Beautiful."

Elsewhere, Bane’s (James Adomian) efforts to impress an unexpected date go horribly awry, and Clayface (Alan Tudyk) engages in some self-love after an unfortunate online dating encounter.

There was also a lot of new blood in the awards, with HBO's House of the Dragon winning the best drama series.
There were also awards for The Bear, Yellowstone, and Dahmer.
HBO dominated the networks, with four wins, while ABC netted three, and Hulu and Netflix each had two.

Nearly five decades after achieving two consecutive Best TV Comedy Actor Golden Globe victories for “Happy Days,” Henry Winkler could now become the first man to ever be honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for both lead and supporting performances on comedy programs. The septuagenarian “Barry” cast member did not succeed on his first two Golden Globe bids for the HBO show, but his luck may change now that he is competing in a brand new category.
Ahead of the 80th Golden Globes, the HFPA established the Best TV Comedy/Drama Supporting Actor and Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor categories as replacements for a catch-all one that had existed since 1971. Whereas Winkler was beaten in 2019 and 2020 by limited series actors Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal”) and Stellan Skarsgård (“Chernobyl”), he now does not have to concern himself with losing to performers from non-continuing programs. The 74th annual Emmy Awards turned out to be a night of few surprises, with wins playing out largely according to predictions — including TheWrap’s own Steve Pond, who guessed last week that there would be no sweeps as the top shows — “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Squid Game” and “Abbott Elementary” — all duked it out for dominance.
In the end, it was HBO’s limited series “The White Lotus” that took home the most trophies, five, with three wins going to writer-director-executive-producer Mike White.
“Ted Lasso” won four Emmys, repeating its 2021 triumph in supporting actor (Brett Goldstein), lead actor (Jason Sudeikis) and comedy series — and adding directing for a comedy series (M.J. Delaney). “Succession” took home three statuettes, including Outstanding Drama Series, which it last won in 2020.

In 2021 Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso“) and Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks“) faced off at the Emmys in the race for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Waddingham came out on top in that contest. But they’re nominated against each other again in 2022, and this time the race could be even closer, especially with Emmy newcomer Janelle James (“Abbott Elementary“) also making waves.
As of this writing Waddingham gets leading odds of 9/2, Einbinder is right behind her with odds of 5/1, and James is next with odds of 11/2. But that doesn’t tell the whole story because not everyone is on the same page. The Editors who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby heavily favor Waddingham to repeat: eight of them predict her compared to two for Einbinder and one for James. Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Bowen Yang is entering the “Saturday Night Live” episode “Host: Rami Malek” as his 2022 Emmy Awards submission for Best Comedy Supporting Actor. This program aired October 16, 2021 and was the third episode of the 47th season for the NBC late-night show.
In this installment, Yang earns big laughs in a bug sketch by embodying a sultry Daddy Long Legs. He later appears as George Takei in a celebrity school game show and as a mattress store employee disturbed by a pair of customers. Josh Hartnett, best known for roles in films such as The Faculty and 30 Days of Night, has fully bought in to the golden age of television in his latest role – Southern gothic drama Paradise Lost.
The actor, who also starred in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, told Deadline that he was late to the small-screen game but is now a full convert to a world that allows for complex characters.
Hartnett plays a man who moves back to Mississippi with his Palo Alto psychiatrist partner, played by Jane The Virgin’s Bridget Regan in the ten-part drama for Spectrum Originals and Paramount Network.
“I came a bit late to the game in television. The golden age of television had started a while ago and I was reluctant because I didn’t understand the virtue of an open ended story in the way that I do now. It’s a very organic experience,...

What set Elementary, the just-ended CBS Sherlock Holmes adaptation, apart? That's easy: its platonic leading duo. In the majority of fiction, it's hard to create a compelling emotional core relationship that isn't either familial or romantic, but Elementary managed to not only do it, but do it brilliantly. It all comes down to its central thesis: that platonic love is every bit as valuable as other kinds of love.
The Holmes and Watson mythos is, of course, one of the most famous buddy duos in the history of fiction. What sets Elementary apart - from its Holmes predecessors and from other contemporary fictional tales - is that its leading duo could be romantic, but simply aren't. It's not as in the original stories, where Holmes and Watson never could be romantically involved because they're both straight men. This Holmes is a heterosexual man and this Watson is a heterosexual woman.
