Both the WGA strike and most recently the SAG-AFTRA strike may be officially over, but I hope you didn't think that meant the studios would be finished with their nonsense just yet. Many will remember that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made himself public enemy #1 earlier this year with some particularly poorly-considered remarks (although Disney's Bob Iger subsequently waded into the fray and did everything he could to vie for the crown himself). Well, believe me, it's my deepest displeasure to report that Zaslav is, unfortunately, at it once more.
Barely a year after Warner Bros. incited all sorts of outrage over shelving high-profile productions such as "Batgirl" and "Scoob 2" for a tax write-off, dismissing the tireless work of countless artists with the flick of a wrist and preventing anyone from actually seeing the fruit of their labor, the studio has gone and done it all over again. This time,...

Did you know "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie" was even happening before you clicked on this article? You would think Warner Bros. would treat the first-ever fully animated feature-length theatrical film (not including any of the previous "Looney Tunes" package movies that compile multiple shorts) featuring some of the most iconic cartoon characters in cinema history as a momentous occasion. But no, under the reign of current WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav, "The Day the Earth Blew Up" has thus far been treated as little more than extra "content" for the fire (apologies for using the C-word).
Case in point, the original plan was to quietly shuffle "The Day the Earth Blew Up" onto Max with little fanfare -- right up until Zaslav's regime went all Freddy Krueger on the streaming platform's animation department and canceled half a dozen of their developing projects back in...

HBO Max Cancels More Animation, Including ‘Batman: The Caped Crusader’ and 2 ‘Looney Tunes’ Projects
HBO Max continues its baffling decisions regarding its animated programming, with six animated projects no longer making their way to the direct-to-consumer streaming platform, TheWrap has confirmed.
Among the projects that will no longer stream on the platform: “Batman: The Caped Crusader,” from “The Batman” director Matt Reeves, J.J. Abrams and comic book luminary Ed Brubaker; “Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story,” an animated “Family Matters” spinoff; and two high-profile “Looney Tunes” features.
While those projects are still in development, some of which are pretty far along, TheWrap has confirmed that “Driftwood,” an original HBO Max animated feature from Victor Courtright, has been fully canceled.

This week brings more theatrical releases than American audiences have gotten in ages — and possibly more than they’re ready for now, as vaccine rollouts still leave people questioning whether it’s safe to do things like go to the movies.
Some, such as Warner Bros.’ “Tom & Jerry,” can also be viewed via streaming for HBO Max subscribers. Others — including Anthony Hopkins-starrer “The Father” (a subjective look at the impact of dementia on an elderly man) and the aptly named Armie Hammer movie “Crisis” — will be coming to VOD shortly, but are opening today only in cinemas.
For those who are either playing it safe or simply don’t have access to theaters, subscription streaming services are bringing a pair of high-profile music-themed movies. The first, Apple’s “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry” gives audiences an intimate look at the pop star on her way up.

At least “Tom and Jerry” never pretends to be something that it isn’t. From the opening sounds of the new feature-length adaptation of the classic cartoon, it’s readily apparent what audiences are in for. The hook from the beginning of A Tribe Called Quest’s “Can I Kick It?” plays over the baffling new Warner Bros. water tower intro and before you know it, an animated pigeon is lip-syncing to Q-Tip.
There’s little in the following hour and forty minutes that shows any more sense of purpose, a hodgepodge of story and sight gags that goes together about as well as its attempts at combining live action and animation. It’s a “Tom and Jerry” movie that, for some reason, opts to focus on a pair of fictional Instagram celebrities and the ins and outs of hotel administration, whether or not the computer-generated cat and mouse implied...

In the 80 years since Tom and Jerry made their cartoon debut, the duo have zonked, bonked and kerplonked one another too many times to count, and somehow the joke has never gotten old. Nor have the aggravated gray cat and his rival the clever brown mouse, who remain forever young, and forever scrappy — a hand-drawn Punch and Judy whose ruthless slapstick antics have withstood critiques from all corners, including parents who think such animated violence could be a bad influence on kids.
The erstwhile MGM stars got bad reviews when Film Roman tried to go the feature route in 1993 (that movie never should have given them voices), and they’ll probably get skewered again now that Warner Bros. has tried to position the animated duo alongside a live-action ensemble (led by a pair of daffy performances from Chloë Grace Moretz and Michael Peña) in “Tom & Jerry.” But these two...

For every “Paddington” or “21 Jump Street” that turns existing intellectual property into delightful entertainment, there are dozens of failed attempts, like “Chips” or “Marmaduke” or “Baywatch.” Joining that latter list of disappointments is “Tom & Jerry,” a frustratingly unfunny attempt to revive the “Itchy and Scratchy”-inspiring cat and mouse as a live-action-animation hybrid.
If there’s a way of taking those classic slapstick shorts and making their feline-vs.-rodent mayhem appealing over the course of a feature film, director Tim Story (2019’s dreadful “Shaft”) and screenwriter Kevin Costello (“Brigsby Bear”) haven’t cracked the code.
“Tom & Jerry” isn’t an origin story, or an updating, or a revival, or even an ironic commentary. It’s not really much of anything, except an unreal melding of 2-D animated characters and real people in what’s supposed to be modern-day New York City.

Warner Brothers’ live action-animation hybrid film “Tom and Jerry” has quietly locked in a Feb. 26 release date in China, which will make it the first foreign film to hit theaters in the wake of the Chinese New Year.
The lunar new year public holiday, which this year ran from Feb. 11 to 17, is typically the most lucrative movie-going week of the year, and thus one of the most competitive. Authorities impose an unofficial blackout on imported films during the period as a protectionist measure to ensure strong sales for local content.
Most years, the major Chinese New Year tentpoles hold sway over the box office for weeks after their holiday debut, meaning that other strong local titles tend to hold off on premiering until those sales have crested. Everyone’s favorite cat and mouse are taking their antics to New York City. Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled a trailer for the upcoming “Tom and Jerry” movie, scheduled for a 2021 theatrical premiere.
While the titular characters are animated in similar styles as the original television show, the new film diverges from tradition with live actors and a real-world set. Chloë Grace Moretz stars as an event planner hired by a hotel to organize a wedding, but she’s also expected to remove a pesky mouse — Jerry — from his recent residence within the building’s walls.
Written by Kevin Costello and based on Joseph Barbera and William Hanna’s classic characters, “Tom and Jerry” revives the decades-old rivalry as Tom is enlisted to help remove Jerry from the premises before the date of the wedding arrives. Cartoon violence ensues as Tom contrives various schemes to sneak up on Jerry, only to fail on numerous occasions.

The eternal chase of cat and mouse continues, but this time in live action. The first look at Warner Bros.’ live-action “Tom & Jerry” based on the iconic Hanna-Barbera cartoons has all the manic energy of their animated counterparts.
Though Tom and Jerry themselves are the real stars, they are accompanied by some human counterparts, including Chloe Grace Moretz, who plays a wedding player staging an expensive wedding in a New York hotel just as the tomcat and mouse have decided to move in. She hires Tom to root out Jerry before the event, and things can only go wrong from there.
“After a lifetime of being the world’s most famous enemies, Tom & Jerry are about to start over in the big city,” a narrator says before Tom gets hit by a bus.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the most overlooked and/or underrated movie of 2017?
E. Oliver Whitney, Screencrush.com, @cinemabite
Despite the critical praise, “A Fantastic Woman” only a one-week qualifying run last month, and I worry is it’ll easily be forgotten this awards season. Daniela Vega gives one of the most astounding performances I’ve seen this year, one that comes from somewhere fierce and internal, portraying the life and struggle of a trans woman that cinema has rarely shown an interest in exploring. But since you can’t see it until it has a proper release in Febraury, do check one of the year’s other...

The beloved sketch comedy group Good Neighbor was originally formed in 2007 by Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, Nick Rutherford, and Dave McCary. The comedians racked up millions of YouTube hits with their offbeat and uncomfortable sketch videos, including such notable standouts as "My Mom's a Milf", "Is My Roommate Gay?", "420 Disaster," and "Unbelievable Dinner," based on Steven Spielberg's Hook. In 2013, Mooney and Bennett joined Saturday Night Live as featured players along with McCary, who stayed behind the camera as a segment director. Now Mooney and McCary are transitioning to the big screen with the indie comedy Brigsby Bear, a feature-length narrative about friendship, family, and nostalgia that deftly blends humor and heart to create something that is both odd and oddly affectionate. Directed by McCary and co-written by Mooney and their childhood friend Kevin Costello, Brigsby Bear stars Mooney as James, a sensitive young adult living in an underground bunker with his over-protective parents,...

Specifically all you mid-20 year olds and beyond looking for nostalgia for your comfort food. Never has there been so many fat 29 year olds with matching Batman socks looking to relive simpler times. Before work. Before bills. Before the world turned into whatever chaos engulfs our news cycles and threat of Nuclear disaster lies in the hands and a small-minded ego maniac………. (I’m talking to myself here). Kids who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s may go down in history as the most nostalgic generations, as the ones that came before didn’t have as much pop culture and future generations have too much pop culture for anything to truly stick. This nostalgia is in due part to Hollywood reviving every old franchise...

Chicago – “Live from New York, it’s a new generation of ‘Saturday Night Live’ movies!” Four guys from SNL… performers Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett, segment director Dave McCary, and producer/performer Andy Samberg all pitch in to create “Brigsby Bear,” the odd story of a man-boy who loves a TV show.

Kyle Mooney and Dave McCary are well aware that keeping secrets in Hollywood can be a futile endeavor, but that hasn’t stopped them from trying to keep too much information about their comedy “Brigsby Bear” from leaking to potential moviegoers. Armed with a deliberately thin official synopsis and a gleefully weird set of trailers, the filmmakers are eager for audiences to see their film without knowing too much beforehand, instead experiencing the special charms of “Brigsby Bear” with as little prejudice as possible.
It’s a pretty big ask for a movie that debuted over six months ago. It’s also part of the reason why the first-time filmmakers are so high on their distributor, Sony Pictures Classics, which made it clear from their first meeting that they were all-in on the childhood best friends’ big vision — even if it meant keeping mum on some of its most inventive twists.

Sony Pictures Classics paid $5 million for rights to the quirky Kyle Mooney-starring Brigsby Bear after it bowed at Sundance this year. After a stop at the Cannes Critics’ Week sidebar it’s now ramping up for a July 28 theatrical release by unveiling the official trailer ahead of its afternoon appearance in Hall H at Comic-Con. From longtime Saturday Night Live collaborators Mooney (who co-wrote with Kevin Costello) and Dave McCary, who’s making his directorial debut, the…...

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming film Brigsby Bear, which is a fantastic film that I hope people go out and see. I had a chance to see it earlier this year and I was moved and inspired by the story. Anyone who is a true film geek will enjoy this movie. As I've said before, it's a love letter to fandom, imagination, creativity, and the art of filmmaking. This is the best trailer for the film so far so I hope you enjoy it.
The movie tells an offbeat, quirky story of a man named James (Kyle Mooney) who was raised in an underground bunker, off the grid, in the desert by two people who kidnapped him when he was a baby. He spent 25 years in this seclusion with extremely overprotective fake parents. Of course, he only knew them as mom and dad.

Sony Pictures Classics has released a new poster for the indie hit Brigsby Bear.
The film was an Official Selection at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, as well as the 2017 Cannes Critics’ Week Closing Film.
In Variety’s review from the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, writer Geoff Berkshire said, “Brigsby Bear is the rare festival movie where the main character is experiencing the exact same sensation, and that creates an exhilarating viewing experience that works in the film’s favor. Whether or not this collaboration between childhood friends Dave McCary, Kevin Costello, and Kyle Mooney will hold the same appeal after marketing campaigns reveal many of the quirkiest surprises is an open question. But the eccentric, heartfelt curio is sure to attract a cult following under any conditions.”
Friday night’s Los Angeles Film Festival gala for director Dave McCary’s Brigsby Bear was screened at the Arclight Hollywood.

The first teaser trailer has been released for the upcoming film Brigsby Bear, which was one of my favorite films from Sundance this year. This trailer comes off as a little weird and it may not sell you on watching the film, but it really is a great movie! It's a wonderfully made love letter to fandom, imagination, creativity, and the art of film. It is definitely a unique movie that I think audiences will enjoy.

Brigsby Bear was one of my favorite movies from Sundance this year. It was a strange film that pays tribute to imagination, creativity, and the art of film. Audiences are going to love this movie, especially those who have a passion for film.

While watching Room, if one wished there was more laughs to go with the trauma, Brigsby Bear is the film you’ve been looking for. Dave McCary’s directorial debut is a film of imagination, adventure, and discovery, but also one too hesitant to challenge in its tone, traveling down a tiresome path of tropes. Nonetheless The Lonely Island-produced film proves to be a worthy comedic showcase for Saturday Night Live’s Kyle Mooney at his most socially awkward.
For a quarter-of-a-century, James has been living with his supposed parents (Mark Hamill and Jane Adams), but they are not what they seem. The pair actually kidnapped him from the hospital and his home is a secluded bunker with no connection with the world. Unbeknownst to him, the air outside is not poisonous and his real family, and society at large, await beyond his secluded Utah digs. His routine life,...

It’s never a good thing when a production studio’s logo is the funniest part of a comedy, but, in fairness, the guys from The Lonely Island came up with a pretty good one. If only the rest of Dave McCary’s “Brigsby Bear,” a characteristically sweet and off-kilter vehicle for “SNL” star Kyle Mooney, were as amusing or subversive as we’ve come to expect from the companies behind it. (Sony Pictures Classics disagrees; it acquired the film today for worldwide rights.)
Mooney plays James, who initially seems like the son that every parent fears they might raise. An emotionally stunted 25-year-old man-child who lives at home and (literally) never goes outside, James sits in his room all day and obsessively re-watches VHS tapes of his favorite educational television series, “Brigsby Bear Adventures,” a new episode of which arrives at his house each week. And the strangest part...

Disorientation is usually a bad thing; going through a state of mental confusion and having no sense of balance. Brigsby Bear may be one of the most disorienting films ever screened at Sundance. It also may be one of the most enjoyable, original and fascinating films I have ever seen.
Kyle Mooney and Kevin Costello have written a film directed by Dave McCary that is unlike anything I have ever seen. This creative, hilarious tale is a movie hard to place in a genre pigeonhole and nearly as impossible to describe.
Brigsby Bear centers around James Pope, who is portrayed pidgenhole by co-writer Kyle Mooney. The first time we see Pope he is watching his favorite TV show about an anamatronic bear named Brigsby, who is constantly saving the world while teaching valuable life lessons – some stranger than others.
The twist comes when the FBI raids Pope...

Streaming companies and indie distributors will battle it out for these movies. “Brigsby Bear” Kyle Mooney (“SNL”) leads an impressive ensemble in what seems to be a millennial take on “The Truman Show.” The title refers to a children’s TV show made for an audience of one — a boy named James, whose life changes after the show’s abrupt end. Dave McCary directs from a script by Mooney and Kevin Costello. Claire Danes, Mark Hamill, Greg Kinnear and Michaela Watkins co-star. “The Big Sick” Socially relevant fare that’s based on a true story is often a winning combination for Sundance features.
