“Anatomy of a Fall” is the clear favorite to win Best Original Screenplay this year but nominees “The Holdovers,” “Past Lives,” “Maestro,” and “May December” are all hoping to spoil the party. But is “Anatomy of a Fall’s” status as frontrunner as solid as it seems? It’s won a bunch of precursor awards, sure, but what about the academy?
What movies do they like best in this category? Let’s take a look at the last 10 winners of Best Original Screenplay to see what they can tell us about the academy’s tastes in this category, and how that affects “Anatomy of a Fall” and this year’s nominees.
As you can see, drama is the order of the day for academy voters. Five out of the last 10 winners here have been serious fare: Kenneth Branagh‘s “Belfast,” Emerald Fennell‘s “Promising Young Woman,” and Kenneth Lonergan‘s...

As of this writing the frontrunner to win this year’s Oscar for Best Original Screenplay is “The Holdovers” with 69/20 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. What was previously behind it in second place was “Barbie,” yet the Academy recently declared that script to be adapted despite Warner Bros. campaigning it as original. With “Barbie” out of the way, “Past Lives” is now in second place in this category with 4/1 odds. But I think it actually has a shot of taking down “The Holdovers” for the win.
When it comes to Alexander Payne movies at the Oscars, they’ve so far gone one of two ways. They’ve either only won one award for screenplay (as was the case for “Sideways” and “The Descendants”), or they’ve gone home empty-handed. Many are currently predicting “The Holdovers” will fall into that first category, though it’s also...

When the 2020 Oscar for original screenplay went to South Korea’s “Parasite” scribes, some were surprised, but they should not have been; the Academy has long been open to foreign-language contenders in all categories. As early as 1947, when the writing categories were a bit different, the Italian screenwriters Sergio Amidei and Federico Fellini nabbed a nomination for “Open City,” as did French scribe Jacques Prévert for “Children of Paradise.”
While during the 1940s and 1950s, barely a handful of foreign-language films reached the nomination stage for writing awards, by the 1960s, every year saw at least one non-English-speaking nominee, and some years, a whopping three. 1962 marked the first Oscar win for international scribes, with Ennio de Concini, Alfredo Gianetti and Pietro Germi claiming it for “Divorce Italian Style.” And in 1966, French screenwriters Claude Lelouch and Pierre Uytterhoeven nabbed a statuette for “A Man and a Woman.”

The 73rd Writers Guild Awards is underway in a virtual ceremony, honoring the best in original and adapted screenplay and documentary, TV, new media, news, radio/audio and promotional writing.
For the first time, in recent history, the awards ceremonies for both WGA West and WGA East will be in lock step as both have been merged tonight in one live stream. Typically, two ceremonies are held separately in both L.A. and NYC at the same time, with both reading off winners at separate times. Quite often, the NY awards ceremony will get ahead of LA’s and announce winners, completely spoiling the suspense for anyone in the Beverly Hilton ballroom.
Tonight’s host Kal Penn, clad in a satin purple tux jacket, was live from what looked to be his home. The Harold & Kumar actor mentioned that he just became a WGA member.

The winner of four Academy Awards and one of the most buzzed-about movies of 2019 is now available to stream on Hulu.
Beginning today, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite can now be streamed in the Us by those who have a Hulu membership. It's worth noting that Bong Joon Ho’s Barking Dogs Never Bite, Mother, and The Host are also on the streaming service, so if you're looking to catch up on the visionary filmmaker's catalog, Hulu is a good place to start.
This is the latest in several ways to enjoy watching the acclaimed movie. Back in January, Parasite was released on Blu-ray, DVD, VOD, and 4K Ultra HD Digital, and it became available to purchase on Amazon Prime Video in March.
In case you missed it, Parasite will also be joining the Criterion Collection, along with Bong Joon Ho’s Memories of Murder.

Hulu has exclusive U.S. streaming rights to “Parasite,” the film that made history as the first foreign-language film to win best picture at this year’s Oscars.
Under a deal with indie studio Neon, “Parasite” will be available on Hulu beginning Wednesday, April 8, the Disney-controlled streamer announced.
The movie from filmmaker Bong Joon Ho won four Academy Awards for best picture, international film, best director, and original screenplay (which Bong wrote with Jin Won Han).
The thriller/dark comedy explores socioeconomic inequality in South Korea, following an impoverished, literally basement-dwelling family posing as qualified professionals to gain long-term employment by a wealthy family. Neon acquired the North American rights to “Parasite” from Korea’s Cj Entertainment.
Hulu’s streaming rights to “Parasite” come under a multiyear licensing pact it struck with Neon back in 2017, under which all of the distributor’s films and content become available to stream exclusively...

Hipster film folk love a good black comedy, and one that doesn’t hit too close to home can become a big hit. Bong Joon-ho has been making smart, clever movies for years, and this intense satire hit pay dirt, commercially. Neon played their Oscar season cards beautifully as well, with the personable director seemingly omnipresent at festivals and on NPR. The film itself? I find it wickedly clever, yet fundamentally humanist — it’s not mean-spirited.

The Academy Awards plummeted to an all-time ratings low with the 2020 telecast, drawing 3 million fewer viewers than the previous bottom in 2018.
Sunday’s broadcast on ABC, according to Nielsen figures, earned 23.6 million viewers — a sharp 20 percent decline from the 2019 ceremony. The show also dropped 31 percent in the ad sales demographic of adults age 18 to 49, Deadline reports. That ratings slide follows an uptick in 2019, when the Oscars expanded its reach for the first time since 2014.

Bong Joon Ho and Jin Won Han have won the best original screenplay Oscar for "Parasite", becoming the first South Korean film to win an Academy Award.
There have only been five other original screenplay winners for movies written in a foreign language -- the last was Pedro Almodovar's "Talk to Her" in 2002, reports variety.com.

"Parasite" revolves around one family who cons their way into the employ of another, much wealthier, family. The film's themes centre around wealth and entitlement, the disappearing middle class and moral relativism in the face of survival.
"Parasite" is nominated in six Academy Award categories including director, production design, international feature film, film editing and best picture.
It has been a favourite since it claimed the Palme d'Or at last year's Cannes film festival, and earned $165 million at the worldwide box office thus far.

“I thought I was done for the day and ready to relax,” said Parasite director Bong Joon Ho via his translator Sharon Choi when he took the stage to accept the Oscar for Best Director. Bong collected his second Oscar for the night as he already collected trophies for Best International Feature Film as well as Best Original Screenplay along with Jin Won Han
While on stage he was very gracious and cited a quote when it comes to his work: “”When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is, the most personal is the most creative.” This quote came from his fellow nominee Martin Scorsese.
The audience proceeded to give The Irishman director a standing ovation before Bong went on to give love to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s Quentin Tarantino for constantly recognizing his work.

Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” won the best international film prize at the 92nd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday night, making history as the first South Korean film to do so.
The thriller was nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture, and was already the first South Korean feature to be nominated for best international film. “Parasite” made history earlier in the night when it won the best original screenplay Oscar — becoming not only the first South Korean film to win an Oscar, but marking a relatively rare win for a foreign-language screenplay. Bong Joon Ho wrote the script with Jin Won Han.
“I’m so happy to be its first recipient under the new name,” Bong said about the renamed category, previously titled best foreign-language film. “I applaud and support the new direction that this change symbolizes. All our loving crew members and cast members are here with us.

Here in the final stages of the 2020 Oscars season, several Academy Awards voters told Gold Derby who they voted for — and why. They asked us not to reveal their identities, but they were otherwise eager to share their views of the year’s best films. Now that voting has concluded, we’ll share a few with you. The comments below by Voter #3 for each category are part of the thought process in choosing these potential winners.
Best Picture: “Parasite”
It was a very smart, intelligent story that had a point to it. It was very well done from a production design and technical standpoint. The acting was amazing, how the cast brought their characters to life beautifully. It was also unpredictable and didn’t fit into the usual boxes. Second place is “1917.” Third place is “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
Best Director: Sam Mendes (“1917”)

With the 2020 Oscars just days away, it’s time to start locking in your predictions for all 24 categories. Sure, many of the year’s trophies seem to be locked up — just ask acting front-runners Renee Zellweger, Joaquin Phoenix, Laura Dern and Brad Pitt. It was a historic day for Korean cinema as the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced earlier today. Kicking things off was “In the Absence” by Yi Seung-jun and Gary Byung-seok Kam, a documentary on the tragic sinking of Mv Sewol ferry in 2014, which was nominated in the Best Documentary Short Subject category. A short while later, “Parasite” took centre stage. And let’s not forget one more Asian Title within the nominations, the Award-Winning Stop-Motion Animation “Sister” by Siqi Song.

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite continued its storybook trajectory today, becoming the first Korean film nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and picking up additional nods for Bong for Best Director, International Film and Original Screenplay with Jin Won Han, as well as craft nods for Editing and Production Design. It is only the sixth movie in Oscar history to get both the Picture and International Film nods, and the 11th foreign language film nominated for Best Picture.
Director Bong this morning struggled to reconcile with the extraordinary reaction since the movie won the Palme d’Or after its Cannes Film Festival premiere. “I feel it’s like Inception,” he joked through his translator and filmmaker Sharon Choi, who has followed him throughout the season. “Soon I’m going to wake up and realize this was all a dream, I’m still in the middle of Parasite and all the equipment is malfunctioning.

Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.

“Parasite” made history on Monday, becoming the first South Korean movie to be nominated for best picture and best international film.
Given South Korea’s rich film history, it’s remarkable that Academy Awards voters have largely ignored the country’s movies. In 2018, there was a great deal of optimism that Lee Chang-dong’s “Burning,” an acclaimed thriller, would become the first film from the country to earn a best international film nod. It was the first South Korean film shortlisted for the honor. However, when nominations were announced, it was not on the ballot.
Bong Joon Ho also picked up a nod for best director, in addition to original screenplay with Jin Won Han. It also got a film editing nod for Jinmo Yang.

The Oscar race is on.
And it’s about to get a lot more intense when the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announces the nominations for the 92nd Oscars on Jan. 13.
Golden Globes shutout “The Irishman” is favored to earn several nods, as will “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which went home with three Globes. Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” could also go into Oscars night with multiple nominations.
In the lead for best picture nominations are movies including “1917,” “The Irishman,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.”
Renée Zellweger is a sure bet to snag a nomination for her transformation in “Judy” and Adam Driver looks certain to be a nominee for his work in “Marriage Story.” The lead actor’s race is tight. Joaquin Phoenix and Driver are likely locks. But what about Taron Egerton? Will the freshly minted Globe winner make it to the Dolby on Feb.

Netflix’s “The Irishman” garnered the most nominations for the Australian Academy of Cinema & Television Arts International Awards. It picked up six nods, ahead of five for “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood,” and the four each for “Joker,” “Bombshell,” and “Parasite.”
Aacta’s international awards seek to “(honor) the best achievements in film excellence, regardless of geography,” but the nominations this year have thrown up curious anomalies. Oscars frontrunner “Parasite” and Pedro Almodovar’s Oscars hopeful “Pain and Glory” are the only two films that are not in the English language to receive any kind of nomination. And, of the five performances worthy of recognition in the best supporting actress category, four are by Australians. Margot Robbie received two supporting actress nominations for “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” and “Bombshell.”

With no plan, nothing goes wrong.
Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is an extravagant tale of swashbuckling swindling and paralyzing division. Precisely stirred and boiled, the spectacle and captivation behind its story is that we, as spectators, never get a whiff of what’s cooking in the other room. What starts off as biting satire – probing at class politics with the gleeful antics of a poor family leeching themselves onto the fruit of a rich one – furtively evolves into a blend of monstrosities and hellfire, until finally hurtling us into an ocean of organic bloodshed. The journey is so frantically pleasant that any attempt to synthesize it without getting into the nitty-gritty of its sharp twists and turns feels dishonorable. But believe me, this is one of the best movies of the year.
Kim Ki-woo (Train to Busan’s Woo-sik Choi) and his family are living on the edge of poverty in Seoul.
