The media was not quick to embrace Black creatives nor has Juneteenth long been something on its radar. But as different voices enter the culturally and politically shifting landscape, the newly recognized federal holiday — which honors the emancipation of the last enslaved people here in the United States on June 19 — could, or at the very least should, pop up more on screens large and small.
Channing Godfrey Peoples made her directorial debut against the backdrop of Black Lives Matter protests in the summer of 2020 with “Miss Juneteenth“: a feature film starring Nicole Beharie and Alexis Chikaeze as a mother-daughter pair navigating their opposing dreams for the young girl’s future. Before that, “Juneteenth” was the title of Season 1, Episode 9 in Donald Glover’s beloved “Atlanta”: a boundary-breaking FX dramedy about Blackness and celebrity with a surrealist twist.

The hardest time to stick out your neck to make Oscar predictions is right before the big precursor prizes are bestowed like the Directors Guild Awards (Feb. 18 – that’s this Saturday), BAFTA (this Sunday the 19th), Producers Guild (Feb. 23) and the Screen Actors Guild (26), which frequently tattle on who the Oscar frontrunners are. But this pre-guild time doesn’t intimidate our four Oscar pundits: Pete Hammond (Deadline), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Wilson Morales (Black Film and TV) and me.

Watch our video slugfest above and see how we believe the top races will play out. Currently, the most people making predictions at Gold Derby are betting overwhelmingly on “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to prevail as Best Picture, but that doesn’t mean we should dismiss the chances of its closest rivals “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Fabelmans,” “Top Gun: Maverick” … or others, for that’s sake.

When Oscar nominations are announced Tuesday morning, which films will do best? I gathered some of Gold Derby’s longtime and most esteemed contributors, Anne Thompson (Indiewire) and Pete Hammond (Deadline), to help me resolve the mystery while doing a video slugfest with me. I also invited Oscarologist Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV.com), who’s been making Oscar predictions with us at Gold Derby for several years, but lately he’s been on an impressive romp. Actually, Wilson keeps crushing the competition when it comes to achieving the best accuracy scores while squaring off against more than 25 other notable pundits predicting award shows at Gold Derby.
Yes, most Oscar gurus agree that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is the Oscar frontrunner. It leads the racetrack odds at Gold Derby, but “The Fabelmans,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and even “Elvis” pose serious threats. So I asked Wilson: What rivals could topple “Everything”? And which movies are we under-estimating?...

“Good Night Oppy” lived up to its name. The space doc about rovers on Mars took the top honors at the 7th Annual Critics Choice Awards in midtown Manhattan. The move from Brooklyn (where the show had been produced for the last six years) was an upgrade. “Take a look around the Edison Ballroom,” ‘Oppy’ filmmaker Ryan White said. “It was a theater for over 60 years and did ‘Oh Calcutta’ for 13 years. Totally nude with sex-related sketches written by Sam Shepard, Samuel Beckett, Jules Feiffer and John Lennon.” Okay, yes, this place in the Edison Hotel is cooler.
Comic Wyatt Cenac hosted. “Keep making good stuff,” he told the audience. “So next year we don’t have to turn this thing into an awards show for TikTok explainer videos.” The star power was amped up for the new digs. Paul Shaeffer gave “The Beatles: Get Back” its Best Musical Doc award.

Of the 25 Emmy categories currently available to predict in Gold Derby’s predictions center, only one contender has the unanimous support of all 17 of our Experts: Jean Smart (“Hacks”) for Best Comedy Actress. That, folks, is what we call a landslide.
If Smart wins again for her role as legendary stand-up comedian Deborah Vance on the HBO Max comedy series, she would become the first person since Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) to claim consecutive victories in the category. Jld would go on to win six acting trophies in a row between 2012 and 2017, in addition to her three producing triumphs for “Veep” and her acting wins for “Seinfeld” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” Smart currently has four career Emmys on her mantel for “Hacks,” “Samantha Who?” and “Frasier” (twice).

Double, double toil and trouble? If the first reviews out of the New York Film Festival are any indication, former Best Actor winner Denzel Washington could find himself firmly entrenched among the 2022 contenders for playing the title role in Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”
“Stacked with great performances, anchored by Denzel Washington’s masterfully weary soldier-turned-murderer Macbeth and Frances McDormand as his hard-edged conspirator-turned-madwoman of a spouse, and starkly rendered in expressionistic black and white, Coen’s version of one of the most oft-quoted of Shakespeare’s works is a bracingly textured cinematic plunge into some classically dark waters,” Robert Abele wrote in his review for TheWrap.
“Denzel Washington delivers one of the best performances of his career in Joel Coen’s film,” wrote Indiewire critic David Ehrlich in his B+ review.
Added Wilson Morales of BlackFilmandTV.com on Twitter, Washington is “commanding.”

If Gold Derby’s predictions are true that “Sylvie’s Love” will win the Emmy for Best TV Movie, it would be a first for Amazon Prime Video. Previously the streamer contended once in this category for “King Lear” (2019), losing to Netflix’s “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.” The new telefilm stars Tessa Thompson as Sylvie, a 1950s record store worker who has dreams of becoming a television producer. She soon falls in love with Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha) and they begin a years-long, on-again/off-again relationship.
Director/producer Eugene Ashe also wrote the film that originally had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. That’s where Amazon acquired distribution rights, eventually releasing in on December 23, just in time for the holidays. At the Critics Choice Awards, “Sylvie’s Love” was nominated for Best TV Movie and Thompson for Best Actress. It also won the Image Award for Ashe for Best Director.

Paul Bettany (‘WandaVision’) has a stronger chance than you think to win the Emmy, say these Experts
Usually when you think of Marvel TV shows, you don’t automatically think of awards. But “WandaVision” could be the one to change all of that. This Disney Plus limited series broke the water cooler earlier this year for its genre-bending story about fan-fave “Avengers” Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Both actors delivered performances at the top of their games, with Bettany even getting major Emmy buzz for his dual roles as “Soul Vision” (the decent and honorable leading man) and “White Vision” (the emotionless and intimidating antagonist).
Currently 24 of Gold Derby’s Experts have made their Emmy predictions for Best Limited Series Actor, and Bettany comes in third place to win thanks to the support of these two: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Kaitlin Thomas (Gold Derby). The other savvy prognosticators are split between Ethan Hawke (“The Good Lord Bird”), Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) and Joel Edgerton...

Currently all 24 of Gold Derby’s Experts predict “The Crown” will win Best Drama Actress at the 2021 Emmys. However, when you look a bit closer you’ll see that there’s some dissension in the ranks in terms of which leading lady will wear the proverbial crown. A leading 19 of these savvy prognosticators pick Emma Corrin (she takes on the role of Princess Diana), while the other five go with Olivia Colman (she portrays Queen Elizabeth II). Which side do you take in the Corrin vs. Colman battle? There’s still time to make your Emmy predictions before the nominations are revealed July 13.
