Real-time thriller “Nightsleeper” has been acquired by French network TF1.
Starring Alexandra Roach (“The Light in the Hall”) and Joe Cole (“Gangs of London”), the six-episode thriller unfolds in real-time as a sleeper train travelling from Glasgow to London is hacked and events rapidly escalate on board, causing a government agency to frantically intervene.
“Can two people who’ve never met, one on the train and one not, work together to save the lives of its disparate group of passengers as the Heart of Britain overnight service hurtles towards what might quite literally be its final destination?” reads the logline.
The series, which is produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, was written by “Murdered For Being Different” scribe Nick Leather with Laura Grace writing episodes 4 and 5. It’s directed by Jamie Magnus Stone (“Doctor Who”) and John Hayes (“Dublin Murders”).
It will air in the U.

With 11 feature films, six live-action series, nine animated series — and, lest we forget, one holiday special — the original “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope” is starting to feel like it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. “Ahsoka” occupies an interesting spot at the nexus of “Star Wars” storytelling from the past couple decades, though.
The Disney+ series acts as a bridge between the worlds of Dave Filoni’s work on the excellent animated “Rebels” and the innovative technical approach to “The Mandalorian.” Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), former apprentice to Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), may have the challenge of trying to preserve the galaxy in the face of sinister threats from Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and others, but “Ahsoka” has the challenge of blending templates set in animation with the demands of live-action — and pushing both forward, as the show takes Ahsoka and the...

When an estimated 1,000 international TV buyers descend on Los Angeles for the annual TV event known as the LA Screenings, they will see a contracted market still recovering from the twin Hollywood strikes of last year and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the pandemic.
It kicks off with the LA Screenings Independents, held May 15-17 for smaller studios and distributors at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, which are then followed by screenings at the major studios’ respective lots across May 18-22 where they present their latest shows. They may also host a variety of events for their clients during those days, which may include cocktail receptions and luncheons or dinners with talent and executives.
While stalled projects ramped up as soon as the strikes ended, some delays were inevitable. “A couple of months ago I was wondering if we were going to be entertaining [buyers],” says Lisa Kramer, president, International Content Licensing,...

It’s Day 2 of the Upfronts and Amazon is making its primetime debut.
The streamer is already making news with a series order for a Nic Cage-from Spider-Man noir live-action drama, a Jeopardy! spinoff and a slew of sports docs including a third season of Coach Prime.
There have also been renewals for The Boys and Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
This comes after Tom Brady was in the huddle for yesterday’s Fox Upfront and NBCUniversal held their annual ad blowout at Radio City Music Hall.
Held at Pier 36, Amazon kicked off thirty minutes late with thousands of people lining up outside a construction site to get in.
(Dade Hayes/Deadline)
Alicia Keys opened the show; a few chords on the piano before promoting her Amazon Premium Beauty lifestyle brand (obviously) and kicking into No One and her Jay-Z duet Empire State of Mind (New York). “It’s going to be a beautiful day,...

Returning for its 15th annual edition this weekend, the TCM Classic Film Festival will turn Hollywood Blvd. into the center of the movie universe again for four days, for that very obsessive and loving subset of film fans that has the network’s vintage fare as part of their weekly and daily lives. And just what time span “classics” falls into is exemplified by the big opening and closing night films.
The gala opening night picture is 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” which festival director Genevieve McGillicuddy says “is one of the most contemporary films that we are showing this year, along with ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Little Women,’ the 1994 version. ‘Seven,’ I think, is the most recent film we’re screening; that’s 1995. Customers can access the MyDisney site to manage their accounts and marketing preferences across Disney services like Disney+ and Hulu.
Disney has the ability to offer different types of entertainment experiences in ways that none of its competitors can. The company has its TV and movie studios, of course, which churn out dozens of titles per year that eventually make their way to streamers like Disney+ and Hulu, but it also has its theme parks, cruise ships, as well as online shopping choices that customers can access from anywhere. It can be confusing to keep login information for websites that deliver these experiences and products straight, which is why Disney is rolling out the new “MyDisney” unified login ability to allow consumers to access all their various Disney accounts with a single username and passowrd.
The MyDisney experience will allow customers to log into Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ with one email and password combo.

MIPTV boss Lucy Smith grew visibly emotional as she said farewell to the 61st and final MIPTV late Tuesday afternoon.
Smith, who runs Mip organizer Rx, acknowledged negative feedback from attendees about MIPTV’s end such as “It’s about time” and “What were you waiting for?,” as she talked a packed Palais des Festivals through what they can expect from next year’s Mip London, which will take place at the same time as the London TV Screenings.
“We do believe the time is now,” she said. “Refreshingly, I hear people say, ‘How exciting,’ but I also hear, ‘Will it work?.’ We firmly believe it will and that there is an appetite for a market. The distribution calendar has moved forward to London in February.”
Footfall at MIPTV 2024 was well down on last year, Smith revealed earlier today.

Distributors who adhere to longer exclusive theatrical windows can mitigate against digital piracy, the CinemaCon panel ‘Changing Tastes And Changing Landscapes’ head on Monday.
Cinepolis COO Miguel Mier said digital content was an easier target for criminals, concluding: “The longer the window, the better our business and the less pirated it is.”
Rebecca Kearey, EVP/head of business operations and international at Searchlight Pictures agreed. “If you’re a studio and you control global distribution, you can mitigate some of this because you’re working on windows. If you’re an independent, it’s much harder.”
The panel also addressed the success of local-language cinema.

The global box office saw some encouraging rebound in 2023, and is off to a better than expected start in the first quarter of this year, but there’s been concern about a downward trend in per capita admissions, and not just because of the strikes’ disruption to the Hollywood theatrical pipeline, but audiences’ moviegoing tendencies have changed coming out of Covid. How to solve?
It takes two to tango, specifically between exhibitors and studios in order to rally moviegoing back to pre-pandemic heyday levels; last year’s near $34 billion global box office was still 15% behind the 2017-2019 average.
It all comes down to both studios and theater chains “working together to share information” said Paramount SVP, International Distribution, Helen Moss, “to elevate something new you can’t get at home.”
Moss’ remarks were made today during the CinemaCon Las Vegas session “Changing Tastes and Changing Landscapes” moderated by Deadline International Box Office Editor Nancy Tartaglione.

Exclusive: In Playing Nice James Norton stars as Pete, a doting dad who finds out his son was switched at birth, giving him a different kind of hero to portray. “He’s a kind of small hero,” Norton told Deadline. “Unlike most of the characters I’ve played, he’s very likable, very amenable and recognizable. There’s a simplicity to him, which I hadn’t really played before, and a likability and quietness that made him feel very real.”
The adaptation of the Jp Delaney novel is produced by Studiocanal and Rabbit Track Pictures, the indie Norton set up with Kitty Kaletsky in 2019. It will bow on ITV in the UK and play on Canal+ in France. Studiocanal is handling international sales and will launch the series internationally this week in Cannes at MIPTV.
