The handmaidens of Naboo are some of the coolest — and probably least explored — characters in "Star Wars" history. They served queen-turned-senator Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) dutifully in "Episode I - The Phantom Menace" and its sequel, "Attack of the Clones." But aside from the odd switcharoo and near-death situation, the films don't reveal much about the handmaidens' interior lives, or their personal connection to Padmé.
Worse still, Padmé's most famous decoy, Sabé (Keira Knightley), was never seen again after her introduction in "The Phantom Menace." That's probably due to the fact that Knightley was off shooting a new franchise, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, while George Lucas continued work on the prequels. But that left a kind of void in "Attack of the Clones" and "Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith," one that novels and comics would only fill years later.
A recent Darth Vader-centric storyline even Sabé's arc in earnest.

Darth Vader didn't always have a red lightsaber. Early concept art by Ralph McQuarrie (pictured below) shows Vader wielding a blueish-white blade, the same as the Jedi. After all, Vader was always a fallen Jedi (though making him Anakin Skywalker came later).
Lucasfilm/Ralph McQuarrie
Whatever the case, the change to red was the right call. The color complements his black armor better, contrasts with the blue and green blades he duels onscreen, and radiates evil. Symbolically, red is also the color of both anger and blood. The red lightsaber is such a memorable part of Vader's presence that when the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy came around, all the Sith Lords there had red lightsabers too. Ergo, red became the de facto color of evil lightsabers.
We first see a lightsaber when Ben Kenobi (Alec Guinness) gives one to Luke (Mark Hamill), saying the blue blade belonged to his father.

After the "Star Wars" prequel films, we could have called it a day for the franchise. Instead, we got a film and a series about a character named Ahsoka Tano (voice of Ashley Eckstein), who has become a fan favorite. So much so that she made several TV series cameos and got her own live-action Disney+ series with Rosario Dawson taking over the role. The young Togruta woman who apprenticed with Anakin Skywalker before his fall to the dark side first appeared in the animated film "The Clone Wars," which served as the beginning of the animated series of the same name.
We've watched Ahsoka begin as a brash young padawan who slowly learned the ways of the Force, and we saw her leave the Jedi order after she was blamed for something she didn't do. We saw her confront who her master became and followed her adventures through "Star Wars Rebels,...

Perhaps the biggest obstacle prequel-era "Star Wars" storytelling has always had to deal with is that it has a fixed outcome. At worst, it's led to stuff like "Obi-Wan Kenobi," which ends with Obi-Wan just sort of ... awkwardly letting Darth Vader go after defeating him in combat because the plot said so. However, on the opposite end of the spectrum, you have Ahsoka Tano, a character who's successfully cheated death more often than a protagonist in a "Final Destination" film, yet never in a way that strains credulity or feels unearned. Even so, it's difficult to recall a time when "Star Wars" fans weren't predicting her imminent demise.
In point of fact, from the moment a wide-eyed Ahsoka showed up proclaiming herself Anakin Skywalker's new Padawan in the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" film, she's always seemed to have a target on her back. During Vanity Fair's 2020 oral history about the character,...

This review contains major spoilers for "Star Wars: Crimson Climb" by E.K. Johnston. We highly suggest you bookmark this review and return later after you've read it.
As far back as she could remember, Qi'ra always wanted to be a gangster. And "Crimson Climb" shows us how she makes that transition from scrumrat to the big time. Set just after the prologue of "Solo: A Star Wars Story," E.K. Johnston's "Crimson Climb" tells the tale of Qi'ra's ascension from the White Worms on Corellia all the way up to the high ranks of the criminal syndicate Crimson Dawn. Covering about a year and a half of her life, she grows from scrumrat to cunning criminal operator in the lethal "Star Wars" underworld. She's put through brutal test after brutal test and finds herself in the service of Dryden Vos. After working with various groups of criminals on other planets,...

The latest Disney+ series "Ahsoka" introduces "Star Wars" fans to some new villains. We already met Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto), the Imperial Magistrate of Calodan on "The Mandalorian," but now she's working with two Force users, Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson) and Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno). Baylan is a former Jedi who managed to survive Order 66 and is now acting as a mercenary for Elsbeth. He and his apprentice Shin appear to be powered by the dark side of the Force. While a single master and apprentice usually indicate a Sith pair, these two aren't wielding red lightsabers like, say, Darth Vader. Baylan and Shin's lightsabers are orange in color.
The orange lightsabers definitely grabbed the notice of fans when the first "Ahsoka" trailer was released. In fact, creator Dave Filoni confirmed to Screen Rant during Star Wars Celebration earlier this year that these are, in fact, orange lightsabers and told the site,...

"The Clone Wars" cartoon introduced the Togruta padawan who won the hearts of many fans. George Lucas created Ahsoka Tano to give the famed Anakin Skywalker an apprentice, thus kickstarting a game-changing piece of canon outside of his "Star Wars" feature trilogies. Originated and voiced by Ashley Eckstein, the Togruta entered "Star Wars" with a coming-of-age arc that endured across several "Star Wars" cartoons, texts, and now the live-action realm beginning with "The Mandalorian" (portrayed in the flesh by Rosario Dawson).
The upcoming live-action "Ahsoka" series, developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, seems both exciting and daunting for Star Wars fans, since it heralds the live-action iterations of the fan-favorite Spectres of the Ghost crew in the "Star Wars Rebels" cartoon. If you want to (re)familiarize yourself with Ahsoka and her allies, /Film has gathered the necessary textual and illustrated projects you should read before the new show premieres.

At the end of "Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi", Ahsoka Tano — former padawan of Anakin Skywalker — faces off against a nasty, double-lightsaber-wielding villain. This monster has set ablaze the farm where she was hiding and captured those who were harboring the fugitive Jedi. This character, voiced by the great Clancy Brown, is definitely a member of the Imperial Inquisitorius, but the clues to his actual identity are a little bit confusing.
Let's get to the bottom of who this could be.

Two very important steps in the evolution of Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) happen in 2002's "Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones": he massacres an entire village of Sand People -- including women and children -- in retaliation for the murder of his mother Shmi (Pernilla August), and later weds Senator Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) in secret. These two opposite poles of his character do not happen in a vacuum, as Padmé is aware of the rage murder incident that has happened, so she knows what Anakin is capable of before she decides to fatefully tie that knot.

Star Wars fans were beginning to wonder whether the Cassian Andor TV show is still happening due to the lack of official updates, but earlier this week came word that Good Omens star Adria Arjona has joined the project. Disney and Lucasfilm are yet to disclose who she’ll be playing in the Rogue One spinoff, though one Star Wars fansite claims to have figured it out.
According to Dork Side of the Force, Arjona may have been cast in the role of Sabe, Padme Amidala’s decoy from The Phantom Menace. The actress is certainly of the same ilk as Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley – who played the queen and her double, respectively, in the Prequel Trilogy – but her vague physical resemblance to them isn’t the only evidence to support this theory, or so it is claimed.

One of the grandest schemes in the Star Wars narrative was how Darth Sidious managed to masquerade as a Republic Senator and mingle with Jedi undetected. It’s a given that the Sith were trained in all manner of deceit and subterfuge, but this was some next-level infiltration skill. Of course, there was always the lingering question of how the most perceptive beings in the galaxy failed to sense pure evil hiding right under their noses, but a recently released Star Wars novel reveals that Yoda did indeed realize something was amiss.
Queen’s Peril by E.K. Johnston recounts a scene where Yoda experiences an absence in the Force. The moment comes when he’s meditating and is interrupted by Mace Windu at the Jedi Temple. Windu has questions related to what Yoda might be sensing, which he hasn’t discussed with anyone yet. But the alien replies in his...

When Disney started up their new Star Wars content, wiping the previous Expanded Universe material from continuity, there was dismay from fans who were furious that this wealth of novels, comics, games, etc., was now relegated to Legends status. As the years have gone by, though, certain concepts, storylines or characters have been carried over from the old canon to the current one. The Clone Wars and Rebels have been good value for this, for example.
But a new novel has made a major change that completely separates it from the Legends canon, and it’s all to do with Darth Plagueis. After the reference to Palpatine’s Sith master in Revenge of the Sith, fans had to wait until 2012’s Darth Plagueis novel, written by James Luceno with input from George Lucas, for his full story. Originally introduced as a supporting character in The Clone Wars movie that spawned the animated series, Ahsoka Tano is unquestionably the star of The Clone Wars season 7. In just eight episodes (she’s not in the first arc of the season), we follow Ahsoka from Coruscant’s seedy Level 1313 to the Siege of Mandalore to the chaos of Order 66. In essence, the final season maps out where Ahsoka was and what she was doing at the end of the Clone Wars and how the Jedi Purge completely changed the trajectory of her life.
The Clone Wars could only end in tragedy. That much we already knew from Revenge of the Sith, but Ahsoka’s journey is particularly heartbreaking, not least because of the stuff she still doesn’t know by the end of the series. In the “Siege of Mandalore” arc,...

Star Wars: The Clone Wars reached its penultimate episode today, with the show finally coming to the fateful events of Order 66. Obviously, we’ve known for a long while that Ahsoka Tano survived the destruction of the Jedi, as she returned in sequel series Star Wars Rebels. Likewise, Captain Rex was confirmed to have overcome his clone programming on that same show. This depiction of their escape, however, conflicts with what we’d already been told, but it’s probably for the best.

Queen’s Shadow, the 2019 exploration of how Padmé Amidala progressed from queen to senator, did what the best tie-in novels do. It added to Padmé’s story, threading plot, character, and world-building together. Even if Padmé isn’t one of my favorite characters, it’s hard to deny Queen’s Shadow added depth and breadth to the Naboo senator who would become the mother of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa.
Queen’s Peril, E.K. Johnston’s followup, does not perform as well.
Set before and during The Phantom Menace, Peril is a prequel to Queen’s Shadow. Ahsoka returns! Once a Jedi and now a runaway, she has to make her own way in the dangerous lower levels of Coruscant’s planet-sized city. This episode kicks off an arc that will last most of the season, leading to the Siege of Mandalore, one of the last conflicts in The Clone Wars (and one mentioned in The Mandalorian.) Down in the lower levels, Ahsoka hides her Jedi powers and meets up with struggling mechanic Trace Martez.
Here are all the references and easter eggs we found in “Gone With a Trace”:
Level 1313
Coruscant’s seediest level was originally the setting of two Star Wars projects that never saw the light of day. George Lucas originally invented this location for what was intended to be the first Star Wars live-action TV series, Underworld. The idea was canned in 2010 due to budget concerns, although two seasons of the show had already been scripted.

The latest issue of the new Star Wars comic series centering around Darth Vader has uncovered the hidden truth about the significance of Padme Amidala’s funeral.
Before Revenge of the Sith came out, fans knew that at its core, the movie would serve as a tragic interpretation of the fall of the Jedi Order and the rise of the Galactic Empire. So, despite going in prepared, Episode III still had many gut-punching moments that left people in an inconsolable state. The execution of Order 66, the purge of the Jedi Temple, Anakin’s fall to the dark side, and ultimately, the battle of two brothers to decide the fate of the galaxy, to name a few, all made the concluding entry in the Prequel Trilogy the darkest Star Wars movie in the history of the franchise. But perhaps the story’s most tear-jerking moment involved the funeral of Padme Amidala on Naboo.

Disney+’s revival of The Clone Wars might have brought a piece of Star Wars history back to life for a certain demographic of the fan base, but this summer sees a more in-depth return to the days of the Galactic Republic with the release of Star Wars: Queen’s Peril, a young adult novel focusing on the teenage queen of Naboo. The Hollywood Reporter has a sneak peek at what lies in store for the future bride of Anakin Skywalker.
The $17.99 novel sees author E.K. Johnston return to the prequel era of her earlier novel, the New York Times best-seller Queen’...

Want to know where to start with Star Wars books? Here are the 20 best adventures across both Legends and the new canon.
The Expanded Universe has been a part of Star Wars for almost as long as the movies have, starting with Alan Dean Foster's novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye, which was published in 1978 and was originally conceived as a low-budget continuation of A New Hope had the movie flopped. But Foster's Luke and Leia adventure isn't actually the first Star Wars book. Star Wars has existed longer on the page than on the big screen. Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker, the official novelization of A New Hope, was published in 1976, six months before the release of the movie (a move that's hard to fathom by today's spoiler culture).

Explore Padmé's life before Star Wars: Attack of the Clones with this fun Ya novel. Our review of Queen's Shadow...
E.K. Johnston's Queen’s Shadow isn’t the first Star Wars book to focus on the tragic senator Padmé Amidala, but it is the most rigorous.
During the Prequel era, readers could use one of The Phantom Menace fictional journals, or The Queen’s Amulet and Queen in Disguise middle-grade stories, get more information regarding the character. There was even a paper doll book. But there were Padmé fans who wanted more. Many made it themselves in the form of fanfic.
Queen’s Shadow gives Padmé a serious canon treatment for young adult and adult fans. Just like The Clone Wars, it’s better as connective tissue between movies than as a standalone story, but meticulous world-building and the depth of emotion the characters clearly have for one another gives it strength.

2018 won’t exactly go down as a triumphant year for the Star Wars franchise, with Solo: A Star Wars Story providing the space saga with its first outright box office bomb. Nonetheless, the show must go on, and it’s evident that Lucasfilm will be going harder than ever this year, with plans to bring the franchise to a variety of mediums.
Among the many projects in the pipeline, the work that’s least in need of an introduction is Star Wars: Episode IX, which is set to wrap up the current Sequel Trilogy when it arrives in theaters on December 20th. On the small screen, meanwhile, The Mandalorian is noteworthy as the first live-action TV series of the franchise, with Entertainment Weekly recently confirming that the show will drop on Disney Plus this year.

Need help starting your Star Wars adventure? Check out our beginner's guide to the canon timeline!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens ushered in an entirely new generation of fans looking for more adventures in the galaxy far, far away, but with the whole issue of Legends canon vs. the new canon and a whole slate of new books, comics, and movies arriving in the next few years, it can be hard to figure out where to start. Luckily for you, it's become a bit easier to dive into the canon materials now that a clear line has been drawn between Legends (pre-Disney) and new canon (post-Disney) stories, but that new material is quickly growing, too.
In order to help new fans get a clear look at the official Star Wars timeline, we've put together a list of the most central Star Wars books, comics, and...
