"I have always had this knowledge that I could make any man fall in love with me if I really tried... And I think maybe it's ruined my life." This line really cuts deep. A24 has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled Janet Planet, marking the feature directorial debut of playwright Annie Baker. This first premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival last year, playing at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) and this year's Berlin Film Festival a few months ago. In her debut feature film, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Annie Baker captures a child’s experience of time passing and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother as she spends more time with her. The story follows 11-year-old Lacy, who spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet. As the months pass,...

The bond between a mother and daughter is, for lack of a better term, always fraught.
In playwright-turned-filmmaker Annie Baker’s feature directorial debut, that relationship is pulled to its edges as “Mare of Easttown” Emmy winner Julianne Nicholson plays Janet, a mother called upon by her preteen daughter Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) to pick her up from summer camp. Lacy’s reason? She’s on the verge of a nervous breakdown. But maybe so is Janet. “Every moment in my life is hell,” Lacy tells her mother.
Baker’s “Janet Planet” follows Janet through Lacy’s eyes as the mother-daughter duo delve into a codependent balance onscreen, with Janet cycling through relationships and other relatable ups and downs. Elias Koteas, Sophie Okonedo, and Will Patton also star in the feature, which is set in 1991.

The nearly year-long span from discovering Janet Planet‘s existence to seeing a single frame was fraught with worry. What if the extraordinarily talented Annie Baker fumbled her transition into filmmaking? Nothing catastrophic, surely––no sane person’s faulting Michael Jordan for his minor-league stint––but to paraphrase Kent Jones on John Carpenter: America doesn’t have so many great directors to spare that it can afford Annie Baker failing.
From frame one it was clear no such thing would happen. Janet Planet‘s a case study in a genius trying a new medium––base understanding of its what and how and why, but lack of precedent or traditional method yielding something rather new. Ahead of the film’s June 21 limited release, A24 have released a first trailer, albeit one that sells a different movie: scored by the Roches’ “Hammond Song” and cut to emphasize some wittier dialogue, it...

Folks, I just got done digging through the dustiest, crustiest, mustiest box of 80s schlock that I could get my hands on and… Well, I found something I needed to share with you guys. Now, the art of making an original horror film with unique ideas, clever storytelling, and engaging characters to bounce off a scary antagonist can be damning if not extremely difficult. And this movie is proof that sometimes it can be Too difficult because it has none of those things. 1980’s The Boogey Man (watch it Here) is the story of a pair of siblings as they battle with the trauma of their childhood and the return of an evil entity that once possessed them in a blood-soaked trance. The movie was written, directed, and produced by German actor Ulli Lommel and starred his then wife (Suzanna Love) and her brother Nick Love as the film’s main protagonists.

There are many films that have a vital real-life issue being discussed in the background, but we can only see it through the characters that are introduced to us. In Suncoast, the issue is quite serious: the value of human life. The film takes place in 2002, when the Terri Schiavo case was in its most heated state of affairs in the US. In the foreground is the story about Doris and her family, where her mother worries about Doris’ ill brother, who is in a coma with only some sensory faculties left. It’s a semi-autobiographical directorial feature by Laura Chinn, and she tries to mix in contemporary issues in this coming-of-age dramedy.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens In The Film?
The protests were ongoing in the Terri Schiavo case. She was on life support with a feeding tube, keeping her alive. Doris, however, wasn’t concerned with that at all.

As I get older, I find it harder and harder to find horror movies from the 80s and even 90s to qualify for a recommendation towards a best horror movie you never saw. First is the influx of all these great companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, and Severin Films, not to mention Kino and Scream Factory, who pull out all the stops finding the most hidden of hidden gems to clean up and release. Second, we have a ludicrous amount of streaming services, and the free ones typically can find these smaller movies that cost way less to license a streamable version. Between my generation recommending everything under the sun to their coworkers, friends, and family as well as newer generations being willing to stream something if its easy to find, the 80s is well represented, for better and for worse. The 2000s are Chock Full of movies that came...

Welcome to the era of reverting back to teenagehood.
Just take Olivia Rodrigo as an example. Her latest studio album, "Guts," has allowed her to amass a large group of 20-something and 30-something "teenagers" who are obsessed with her music. While Rodrigo is only 20 herself - and broke out with her debut, "Sour," as an 18-year-old - she's been able to uncannily appeal to an older, more mature audience.
Of course, the idea of embracing youth as we age isn't a new concept, but this moment feels different. Across social media, millennials are talking about the phenomenon. From memes to videos, the "20-something teenager" is a veritable identity, thanks to Rodrigo's 2000s pop-rock sound; the resurgence of former Disney stars like Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato; and countless Y2K fashion trends, from accent nails to jersey dresses.
But how did we get here, and why are so many adults...

Major spoilers for "Expend4bles" follow.
Ever since "The Expendables" was released in 2010, the identity and tone of the franchise has been heavily in question. That first film seemed to want to have things both ways, presenting the trials and tribulations of the (very fictional) titular team of mercenaries while metatextually commenting on (and piggybacking off of) the action stars playing them. Put another way, it's as if the crossover formula seen in Marvel's "The Avengers" franchise was reversed: the coming together of the film's stars are the big draw, while the characters are (at least initially) not well known.
While 2012's "The Expendables 2" leaned far more into the meta aspects of people like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris showing up in the same film, 2014's "The Expendables 3" attempted to find a similar balance to the first film, establishing its characters in their own right while still...

‘The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial’ Trailer: William Friedkin’s Swan Song Is a Military Courtroom Drama
William Friedkin’s final feature “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial” is debuting on Showtime.
Friedkin, who died in August 2023 at age 87, wrote and directed the adaptation of Herman Wouk’s 1953 play, itself adapted from his own Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The film version, which takes place entirely inside a courtroom, follows a U.S. naval first officer (Jake Lacy) standing trial for orchestrating a mutiny after his captain (Kiefer Sutherland). The captain showed signs of becoming unstable and, the first office alleges, jeopardized the lives of his crew. Jason Clarke portrays skeptical naval lawyer Barney Greenwald who agrees to defend Lacy’s character, Lt. Steve Maryk.
As the trial progresses, Greenwald becomes increasingly concerned and questions if the events aboard the Caine were deemed a true mutiny or simply the courageous acts of a group of sailors who did not trust their unstable leader.

Olivia Rodrigo paved her own way for her excellent, guitar-drenched second album, Guts. It’s impossible to imagine a major pop artist pushing this hard into rock if she hadn’t already opened the door with the hardest-hitting moments of her 2021 debut, Sour. The wait is over. Olivia Rodrigo's highly anticipated sophomore album, "Guts," is out in the world, and it's everything we had hoped for and more. The "Good 4 U" singer is known for penning vulnerably honest, true-to-life lyrics that run the gamut of all the complex and wonderful - albeit sometimes messy - emotions coming of age has to offer. Her latest LP is no exception (which is probably why fans will be using "Guts" lyrics for Instagram captions for years to come).
A follow-up to the 20-year-old singer-songwriter's record-shattering debut record that launched her to global superstardom, "Sour," "Guts" consists of 12 songs on its standard edition, and several of those tracks have already become instant fan favorites - especially "Lacy." Clocking in at two minutes and 58 seconds, the fourth track on the album packs in powerful, gut-wrenching lyrics that cohesively tie into the overarching theme of the compilation. The...

Five decades ago, "M*A*S*H" all but invented the TV dramedy. There had been a few shows before the hit wartime sitcom that straddled the line between inspiring laughter and tears, and there would be plenty more after, but few have ever mixed the two seemingly contradictory genres as perfectly as "M*A*S*H" did.
Across its eleven seasons, the members of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital partook in plots both side-splittingly funny — prank wars! Traveling long johns! Rib cravings! — and heart-wrenchingly somber. Through both its funniest moments and its darkest, the show adhered to a strong anti-war attitude, frequently focusing on the senseless loss of armed conflict and the zealous, jingoistic leaders who let it happen.
One such episode is "Preventative Medicine," a season 7 outing in which Hawkeye (Alan Alda) decides to medically sideline a bloodthirsty front-line commander who has a disturbingly high casualty rate. Over the course of the episode,...

The last works by artists who have just died often acquire a strange patina of significance. Whether the deceased knew the work would be their last or not, it’s almost impossible not to read into them a foreshadowing of the maker’s imminent departure, a railing against the dying of the light or a tidy return to earlier themes.
The storied director William Friedkin passed on Aug. 7 at the age of 87, just weeks after he completed his last feature film, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. I don’t know if Friedkin was aware this would be his last when he decided to make it, but it does feel like a fitting final artistic word in many ways. Like so many of his other movies, it’s pithy, punchy, a little shouty at times, but made with brio and swagger.
From the earliest days of his filmmaking career, he was drawn to theatrical material.

The first thing we hear from the 11-year-old Lacy in playwright Annie Baker’s contemplative yet cold-to-the-touch film debut “Janet Planet” is that she will kill herself.
Okay, perhaps some context is necessary, as her threat isn’t nearly as dark as it sounds—in fact, it lands with a chuckle. Played with precocious seriousness by newcomer Zoe Ziegler in an observant performance, the tight-lipped and often unsmiling Lacy happens to be stuck at a cheesy summer camp she can’t stand and is begging her mom on the other end of the phone line to come and pick her up, exaggerating with her sarcastic words just how desperate she is.
Studiously bespectacled, dressed in oversized tees and sporting a nerdy mid-part, Lacy wins her case eventually, proving at once that she is still very much a mommy’s girl despite looking like an independent and amusingly know-it-all heroine—a...

It’s almost cosmic, the way kids start out as nothing more than a twinkle in their mother’s eye. Then they’re born into heavenly little bodies, orbiting the adults who made them like tiny moons, until such time that they overcome their parents’ gravitational pull. So it is with “Janet Planet,” one of those intensely personal portraits of childhood that we’ve come to expect — and appreciate — from A24, the indie studio behind “Moonlight” and “Lady Bird” and “Aftersun” and “Eighth Grade” (the example this one most resembles). The list goes on.
Seriously, as many as 24 different A24 movies could fit this category — and now we get playwright Annie Baker’s micro-normous take: a small but incredibly specific movie that feels every bit as attentively crafted and evocative as those earlier titles, while remaining wholly unique and distinct from them. It’s striking proof of an original sensibility.
