The latest film from acclaimed director Jeff Nichols, ‘The Bikeriders’, has received a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, the popular review aggregator website. The film, which stars Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Michael Shannon and Mike Faist, is a thrilling drama about a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who embark on a cross-country road trip in the 1960s.
The film is inspired by the iconic photography book of the same name by Danny Lyon, who documented the lives and culture of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Nichols, who also wrote the screenplay, said he wanted to explore the themes of freedom, rebellion and identity that Lyon captured in his images.

But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.
With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, critics are raving, “‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ piles on more of everything — and suggests that when it comes to a well-dressed Keanu Reeves dispatching his enemies in lethally balletic style, there can never be too much.”
In addition to Reeves, the returning cast includes Laurence Fishburne as underworld boss the Bowery King, Lance Reddick as Continental Hotel concierge Charon, and Ian McShane as Winston Scott, the manager of the Continental Hotel who betrayed John at the end of “Chapter 3.” New cast members include Bill Skarsgård as the Marquis de Gramont,...

Thirteen years since Avatar first shuttled us to Pandora, James Cameron returns with the second chapter of his Na’vi saga: Avatar: The Way of Water, a spectacle stupefying enough for its many enthusiasts to paint the helmer in near-messianic terms. Hailed, per Entertainment Weekly’s Leah Greenblatt, as “a man outside of time, an emissary from a future where movies look like something we’ve only imagined them to be,” the director, Justin Chang echoes at the L.A. Times, “remains one of the few Hollywood visionaries who actually merits that much-abused term,” a filmmaker determined “to submerge you in another time and place, to seduce you into a state of pure, unforced astonishment.” But the disbelief Chang alludes to deserves careful spelling. Anyone mildly familiar with the Canadian auteur’s filmography will know that Cameron’s craft has always hinged on a kind of dichotomy: impressive as his world building and showmanship often are,...

When German writer Erich Maria Remarque was 18 and a student at the University of Munster, he was drafted into the army and fought in the trenches on the Western front during World War I. He was wounded five times with the final instance in 1917 being so serious he spent the last year of the conflict recuperating in a German hospital. His experiences during the global conflict inspired his powerful 1929 anti-war novel “All Quiet On the Western Front” which, with the war in Ukraine, seems more timely than ever.
The novel slammed the door on the concept of the romanticism of war. War is hell. The book’s protagonist, the wide-eyed innocent Paul Baumer, and his friends are excited to get into battle on the Western front, exterminate the enemy and return home heroes. But Paul quickly realizes the horrors of war. Reading the book is a visceral experience-one can smell...

One of the few certainties going into the 2023 awards season is that Cate Blanchett will receive her eighth Academy Award nomination for her celebrated performance in Todd Field’s “Tár,” about the first female chief conductor of a major German orchestra. Blanchett won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival, and critics have been raving for weeks about her turn as Lydia Tár. Leah Greenblatt says in Entertainment Weekly, “The movie belongs to Blanchett, in a turn so exacting and enormous that it feels less like a performance than a full-body possession,” and Peter Bradshaw says in Guardian, “What a colossal performance from Cate Blanchett.” With the actress poised to become front and center in the upcoming awards season, let’s look back at Blanchett’s seven previous Oscar races.

Wednesday night was the premiere of “The Gray Man,” the Russo Brothers’ ambitious action thriller that, with a budget of 200 million, is the most expensive movie Netflix has ever made. On Thursday, the review embargo for the film lifted, bringing with it a generally underwhelmed response from critics.
The film stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans as Court Gentry and Lloyd Hansen. Filmmaker Robert Eggers broke through with back-to-back horror films “The Witch” (2015) and “The Lighthouse” (2019), both marked by shocking moments of violence and intimate, claustrophobic tension. He expands his scope — not to mention his budget — with “The Northman,” which opened on April 22 and dramatizes the medieval Scandinavian legend that was the direct inspiration for William Shakespeare‘s “Hamlet.” But is it that same level of legendary?

The review embargo for Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” has lifted, bringing with it a handful of raves and several mixed takes on the director’s very long and very dark interpretation of the Caped Crusader. The Warner Bros. comic book tentpole is set during Batman’s second year as a masked crime fighter and follows the vigilante as he tries to capture the Riddler, who sends Gotham City into chaos by exposing the corruption of its leaders.
Robert Pattinson stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman in “The Batman” opposite Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin.
One thing critics agree on when it comes to “The Batman” is that there has never been a comic book movie like it before.

First reactions for Ridley Scott’s star-studded murder drama “House of Gucci” are trickling in following the movie’s official world premiere in London. Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” made its debut at the Venice Film Festival on Friday leaving some critics in awe of the massive scope and spectacle of the “Arrival” director’s work and others wondering what all the fuss is about.
“‘Dune’ reminds us what a Hollywood blockbuster can be,” The Guardian critic Xan Brooks wrote in a five-star review. “Implicitly, its message written again and again in the sand, Denis Villeneuve’s fantasy epic tells us that big-budget spectaculars don’t have to be dumb or hyperactive, that it’s possible to allow the odd quiet passage amid the explosions.”
But writing for Indiewire, critic David Ehrlich offered a strong dissent, tying in Villeneuve’s comments about seeing “Dune” on the big screen with the film itself.

“Dune” (finally) premiered Friday at the Venice Film Festival, ahead of its theatrical and HBO Max release on Oct. 22, but mixed reviews seem to signal that the sprawling sci-fi epic may not have been worth the wait, at least for general audiences.
Critics are hailing Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel as a transporting viewing experience — but with about 100 asterisks attached, mostly pertaining to the flatness of the screenplay and a lack of direction to where this mission is exactly headed.
Steve Pond’s review for The Wrap calls “Dune” both “dazzling and frustrating, often spectacular and often slow. It’s huge and loud and impressive but it can also be humorless and bleak,” adding that “it tries valiantly to address the problems of taking on Herbert’s complex epic, which requires a director to spend lots of time setting things up and explaining the world...

It has been more than a decade since Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2010’s “Iron Man 2,” but she has finally gotten a movie to herself, which had an even longer journey to the big screen than originally intended thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Black Widow” was scheduled to open in summer 2020, but movie theater shutdowns put a stop to that. It finally opened on July 9, 2021, simultaneously in movie theaters and with Premier Access on Disney+. Do critics think it was worth the wait?
Almost every Marvel movie has had at least a somewhat positive score on MetaCritic, and in that context the numbers for “Black Widow” suggest a mid-level Marvel entry. It has a score of 68 on that review aggregator based on 49 reviews counted as of this writing: 36 positive, 11 mixed, and 2 outright negative. The reviews for Marvel Studio’s “Black Widow” are in, and the consensus about the standalone superhero film is that the film “excels,” is “purely pop feminism” and a “deft spy caper.”
With more than 62 reviews in, the long overdue Scarlett Johansson solo film from Marvel studios has a 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review for the film, The Wrap’s Alonso Duralde writes, “Black Widow” excels most as Marvel’s attempt to make their own 007 movie. Like Christopher Nolan’s recent efforts “Tenet” and “Inception,” it doesn’t quite achieve that ineffable something that sets the best James Bond films apart, although each brings something to the table: Nolan’s films offer narrative acrostics, while “Black Widow” comes armed with a sense of humor and capable, self-possessed women at the helm.

Critics are singing the praises of Jon M. Chu’s colorful, joyous and jubilant “In the Heights,” with at least one critic saying that the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s stage production is “the best Hollywood musical in years,” with another arguing it’s even better than the play.
Many of the early reviews of “In the Heights” — which hits theaters and HBO Max on June 11 — are unanimous in their praise of the film’s celebration of community and Latinx representation on screen.
“With ‘In the Heights,’ Chu delivers the Latino equivalent of his previous box office smash ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and knocks it out of the park. It’s a layered story but a feel-good one that will invite many rewatches,” TheWrap’s Monica Castillo writes in her review. “‘In the Heights’ can represent many things for many different viewers. It can be a story about ambitious, hard-working people chasing their dreams.

Few were expecting to see the name of newcomer Adarsh Gourav, who stars in the Netflix film “The White Tiger,” among the nominees for Best Actor at the Independent Spirit Awards. He edged out much bigger names to reap a bid at this Oscars precursor and now numbers among the five best male leads in independent cinema along with Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Rob Morgan (“Bull”) and Steven Yeun (“Minari”).
The rave reviews for Gourav’s performance in “The White Tiger” should have signalled his recognition by Film Independent. “The White Tiger” is rated 94% fresh by the top critics on Rotten Tomatoes. “The White Tiger” director Ramin Bahrani adapted Aravind Adiga‘s Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name.

Breakup songs and albums are big business (just ask Taylor Swift and Adele), and Sam Smith entered the arena on October 30 with the release of “Love Goes,” which was delayed and re-titled due to the Covid-19 pandemic (it was previously intended to be released as “To Die For”). Melancholy ballads aren’t new for Smith; they won a few Grammys for “Stay with Me,” after all. But how does this personal collection of heartbreak songs, reportedly inspired by their split from actor Brandon Flynn, compare to their past work?

The early reviews for “Mank” are coming in, and it’s already looking like a surefire Oscar contender. David Fincher‘s first film since “Gone Girl” in 2014, the highly-anticipated Netflix film tells the story of legendary screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his fight with Orson Welles to retain his writing credit for “Citizen Kane.” With sky-high expectations, does “Mank” live up to the hype? Let’s dive into some critic reviews.
As of Friday, “Mank” has a score of 81 out of 100 on Metacritic and a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is shaping up to be yet another Fincher film that is beloved by critics. Described as “a wonderful throwback” and a “bittersweet ode to a certain slice of old Hollywood,” reviewers suggest the film should appeal to cinephiles, especially with the film being intentionally made to look and sound like it came from the Golden Age of Hollywood. “On the Rocks” is the long-awaited reunion between writer-director Sofia Coppola and actor Bill Murray, who previously achieved success together with the 2003 film “Lost in Translation” (though they also teamed up on the Emmy-nominated holiday special “A Very Murray Christmas” in 2015). It was released on October 2 by A24 in advance of its October 23 premiere on Apple TV+. Does it meet the high expectations they’ve set for themselves?

Miranda July‘s latest film “Kajillionaire” is in theaters now and numerous critics are hailing it as the director’s best work to date. The comedy-drama stars Evan Rachel Wood as a young woman who swindles her way through life alongside her scheming parents, played by Academy Award nominees Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger. One day, they bring in a stranger (Gina Rodriguez), after which things become more complicated. This Focus Features title is available in select theaters on Sept. 25 and will come to VOD on Oct. 16.
“Kajillionaire” currently sits at a positive 79 on Metacritic, besting July’s previous two films, “Me and You and Everyone We Know” (2005) and “The Future” (2011). An impressive 28 of 29 reviews are positive with just one mixed and zero negative. Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is as Sorkin-esque as you would imagine, with critics describing it as the sort of talky, yet rousing and prescient courtroom drama that only Aaron Sorkin does best.
Early reviews give it a 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 75 on Metacritic, with just about every review singling out different performances from its deep cast, including a more playful and goofy turn from Sacha Baron Cohen and Jeremy Strong, a wry, more subdued tone from Mark Rylance and other strong moments from Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Michael Keaton.
But even though the film should be familiar to fans of “The West Wing” and “The Social Network,” among others, critics say generally that “Chicago 7” stands out for Sorkin’s work as a filmmaker.
“Sure, his dialogue has been visceral and urgent in movies from ‘A Few Good Men’ to ‘The Social Network’ to ‘Steve Jobs.

While the Oscars and other awards bodies have all pushed events back on their calendar and expanded eligibility for what movies can be considered, the New York Film Critics Circle will only consider movies released in the 2020 calendar year for its annual awards.
The Nyfcc announced Friday it will vote for its 2020 awards on Dec. 18 and that only movies released in theaters or on digital platforms between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2020, will be considered.
Further, the date for the group’s annual Gala Awards dinner is still to be announced, and membership for 2020 members will be frozen this year, with all current members still eligible to vote, even as many critics’ jobs have been affected by Covid-19. No new members will be voted in this year.

Katy Perry‘s new album “Smile” dropped on August 28, 2020, three years after her last release, “Witness,” underperformed commercially. So will this be the record that puts her back on top? Critics have already started to weigh in. Scroll down to see some of the reviews.

As of this writing the album has a MetaCritic score of 59 based on seven reviews thus far: one mostly positive and the rest somewhat mixed, but none outright negative. Perry has never really been a critics’ darling, though. The critical average of her five albums as Katy Perry (after one self-titled Christian rock album as Katy Hudson) is 54. Her 2010 album “Teenage Dream” scored 52, and that didn’t stop it from going eight-times platinum, producing a record-tying five number-one singles, and earning a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.

With movie theaters still shuttered as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the World War II thriller “Greyhound” starring Tom Hanks made its debut on Apple TV+ on July 10, instead of on the big screen where it was initially intended to be released by Sony Pictures on June 12. “The King of Staten Island” premiered on June 12 on video-on-demand (instead of in theaters due to the continued pandemic). The comedy is directed by Judd Apatow and stars “Saturday Night Live” cast member Pete Davidson, who also co-wrote the film inspired by his own life and the death of his father, a New York City firefighter who was a victim of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Back in 2000, director Paul Verhoeven couldn’t hide the fact that his homage to the classic 1933 thriller “The Invisible Man” starring Claude Rains in his first American screen appearance lived up to its title — namely, “Hollow Man” was indeed hollow, man. Kevin Bacon just couldn’t quite pull off the modern-day version based on H.G. Happy Valentine’s Day from “Downhill,” the comedy about a couple on the rocks — or on thin ice, as may be a more apt metaphor — that opened on February 14. Director Sam Mendes‘s Christmas Day-release “1917” isn’t the first film to present the horrors of World War I, but it does take a unique perspective. Its story of two soldiers (Dean-Charles Chapman and George MacKay) on a mission to deliver a life-saving message is shot to look like one continuous take, immersing us in the action without letting us catch our breaths. Does that approach pay off? Yes, if the reviews are any indication.

Movies about Fox News, gambling addiction and Nazis opened on December 13, but arguably the weekend’s most controversial release turned out to be “Richard Jewell.” It’s Clint Eastwood‘s dramatization of the events of 1996 when the real-life title character saved lives during the Centennial Olympic Park bombing, but was later falsely accused of perpetrating the attack. But the controversy stems from how the film treats another real-life figure, journalist Kathy Scruggs (played by Olivia Wilde). So what do critics think of the film overall, and its depiction of Scruggs in particular?

James Mangold has been riding around the Oscar racetrack for decades now, and although several of his films have collected prizes, he has yet to cross the finish line himself. It’s also a sports movie, and those have paid off handsomely at the Oscars as well, including Best Picture winners “Rocky” (1976) and “Million Dollar Baby” (2004) as well as nominees like “Seabiscuit” (2003) and “Moneyball” (2011). But what do critics think of this latest entry in the genre?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic rating of 79 based on 36 reviews counted thus far: 31 positive, 5 mixed, none outright negative. Over on Rotten Tomatoes the film is rated 91% fresh based on 177 reviews, only 16 of which are classified as rotten. The Rt critics consensus summarizes those reviews by saying, “‘Ford v Ferrari’ delivers all the polished auto action audiences will expect — and balances it with enough gripping human drama to satisfy non-racing enthusiasts.”

To call “Jojo Rabbit” a big swing may be an understatement. Taika Waititi‘s film bills itself as an “anti-hate satire,” but it’s still, to put it mildly, a creative risk to make a comedy about Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust. Nevertheless, it went over well with moviegoers at the Toronto Film Festival, where it won the People’s Choice Award. But what about critics? The film opened on October 18, so reviewers are having their say, and boy do they have a lot to say.
As of this writing the reactions are sharply divided. On MetaCritic the film has a score of 53 based on 32 reviews counted thus far: 15 positive, 12 mixed, 5 negative. But it’s a different story over on Rotten Tomatoes, the pass/fail aggregator where the film is rated 80% fresh based on 134 reviews: 107 positive and only 27 negative. The Rt critics’ consensus says, “‘Jojo Rabbit’s’ blend of irreverent...

Is “Parasite” the best movie of the year? It just might be according to the reviews. The Korean film by director Bong Joon Ho opened on October 11 in limited release, and it’s the highest rated film of 2019 no matter which review aggregator you choose.
As of this writing, the film has a MetaCritic score of 95 based on 31 reviews counted — all of them positive, and 14 of which are rated a perfect 100. That currently ties it with “Marriage Story” at the top of MetaCritic’s 2019 rankings, but “Marriage” doesn’t open for another month, so additional reviews may adjust its average up or down by then.

Eddie Murphy is angling for another comeback, and this time he’s doing it by channeling a comedian who helped make his own career possible. Murphy plays stand-up trailblazer and unlikely blaxploitation star Rudy Ray Moore in “Dolemite is My Name,” which opened in limited release on October 4 ahead of its October 25 streaming premiere on Netflix. So what do critics think?
As of this writing “Dolemite” has a MetaCritic score of 74 based on 21 reviews counted thus far: 16 positive, 5 somewhat mixed. Things are even better on Rotten Tomatoes, the pass/fail critical aggregator where the film is rated 98% fresh based on 55 reviews: 54 of them positive and only one classified as a thumbs down. The lower MetaCritic score indicates that while the vast majority of the critics polled have affection for the film, not too many of them love it outright. But the Rt critics’ consensus says, “In dramatizing Rudy Ray Moore’s stranger-than-fiction story,...

Could Antonio Banderas finally be on his way to his first Oscar nomination — and maybe even a win? The Spanish actor has often been overlooked as a heartthrob, but his performance in “Pain and Glory,” which reunites him with director Pedro Almodovar to play a semi-autobiographical version of the filmmaker, might just do the trick. The film opened on October 4, and the reviews have mostly been glowing.
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 85 based on 25 reviews counted thus far: 22 positive, 3 somewhat mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, which rates films strictly on a pass/fail basis, it has a freshness rating of 96% based on 132 reviews: 127 positive and only 5 negative. The Rt critics’ consensus says, “‘Pain and Glory’ finds writer-director Pedro Almodóvar drawing on his own life to rewarding effect — and honoring his craft as only a master filmmaker can.”

It hasn’t been that long since “Downton Abbey” ended its six-season run on TV (its finale aired in the Us in 2016), but it’s already back, this time on the big screen for a reunion movie that reassembles the entire ensemble cast for a visit from the royal family. It opened September 20, but do critics think it warrants a trip to the multiplex?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 63 based on 36 reviews counted thus far — 22 positive, 13 mixed, only 1 outright negative. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, which rates film on a pass/fail scale, it has an impressive freshness rating of 85% based on 147 reviews — 125 positive, 22 negative. The Rt critics’ consensus says, “‘Downton Abbey’ distills many of the ingredients that made the show an enduring favorite, welcoming fans back for a fittingly resplendent homecoming.”
