After over a year hiatus, Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 has begun production in Montana, as earlier promised and then revealed by Paramount Network Monday. The Western drama series approaches its close with the final episodes predicted to land in November later this year.
Four and a half seasons of the Taylor Sheridan series have followed the Dutton Family, led by patriarch Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, who oversees the largest cattle ranch in the modern-day United States. The Dutton family faces constant challenges from those at its borders — the growing Bozeman, Montana, the fictional Indian reservation of Broken Rock and America’s first national park.
With several prequel series and a contemporary spinoff in the works, the original installment was originally set to conclude at the end of 2023, but the WGA and SAG strikes delayed production on the final episodes.

The cast for the Billy Bob Thornton-led Landman from Taylor Sheridan on Paramount+ just added another heavy hitter to the cast.
Jon Hamm, who has been having a TV reawakening with roles on The Morning Show and Fargo and voice work on Grimsburg, has just joined the series in a recurring guest-starring role.
If you're a fan of Sheridan's productions, you know that might mean Hamm is on screen a lot or very little. Only time will tell.
Hamm's nuanced portrayal of adman Dan Draper on Mad Men put him at the top of everyone's list to work with, and he's reaping the rewards with roles that challenge his skills without pigeonholing the actor's talent.
When his name is added to a show, people pay attention, and his addition is an asset for an already stellar cast on Landman.

One thing you can say about the Taylor Sheridan cowboy-verse is that no one is guaranteed to survive, no matter how big a character they are. That means that the second "Yellowstone" spinoff, "1923," lost some cast members. During a shootout over land, both young Jack Dutton and Elizabeth Strafford lose their fathers after sleeping together for the first time. They're both injured as well, and Jack's mother dies by suicide after losing her husband.
The entire experience leads these two young people to marry in secret, saying their vows alone in nature. They've been in love and were already engaged when the tragedy happened, but these things can sometimes tear people apart. In this case, the bond between them only gets stronger, leading to what they say to each other under the sky.
In a February 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Randolph spoke about that scene and how one of the lines was improvised.

Unlike 1883, which was designed as one season to tell a complete story, 1923 is getting a second season.
As the writing process was underway, Taylor Sheridan realized he needed more time to wrap up the storylines, which means we're getting a second season.
It will probably be the final season because the superproducer has been vocal about not wanting to keep the shows on the air beyond their initial storylines.

“Yellowstone” may have been shut out at the 2022 Emmys, but Paramount+’s Western spinoff “1923” is hoping to break that cycle.
Creator Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the entire first season of the freshman series, has chosen to submit the premiere episode, titled “1923,” for Emmy consideration, Variety can exclusively confirm. In addition, the same kickoff episode will serve as Ben Richardson’s official submission for outstanding directing for a drama.
Read Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Emmy predictions in all categories.
The eight-episode prequel to Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” and sequel to Paramount+’s “1883” follows a generation of the Dutton family during various hardships, including prohibition, drought and the early stages of the Great Depression.
With the star power of veteran actors Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, the duo will be vying for the lead actor and lead actress drama prizes.

Editor’s Note: This interview took place before the writers strike that began May 2.
The cast of 1923 reunited for a chat about the first season of the hit Paramount+ Yellowstone prequel and gave some insight into the process of the franchise’s prolific creator, Taylor Sheridan.
“Taylor called us and said, ‘You have to look at every scene and imagine that it could be the most important scene of the episode, even if it’s just you walking from point A to point B,'” recalled Julia Schlaepfer (Alexandra) in the THR Presents panel, powered by Vision Media. “Everything has meaning.”
That meaning extended to Sheridan’s dialogue, which frequently uses unconventional sentence structures (example: “Why danger gives men such pleasure, I’ll never understand”). “Sometimes you get a weird sentence construction and you go, ‘Why does it go like that?'” recalls Helen Mirren (Cara Dutton). “Because it’s...

In his "Yellowstone" prequel series "1923," Taylor Sheridan turns back time to shed further light on the Dutton family history. The Duttons have been living on the Yellowstone Ranch since the late 1800s, and ever since then, it has been an uphill battle for them to preserve their legacy, amidst constant in-fighting and external rivalries. "1923" continues the tradition of putting legacy above everything else — the story follows Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara (Helen Mirren) Dutton, who are seen shouldering the responsibility of caring for James Dutton's family alongside the ranch. This is no easy task during the Prohibition era, especially right after World War I, and the onset of what will later be known as The Great Depression.

Unlike the first Yellowstone prequel 1883, Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 was always meant to have a season 2. The series will return with more of the 20th-century Dutton’s story, but there’s limited information about the new season. Here’s everything we know so far.
Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton in ‘1923’ | Emerson Miller/Paramount+ What will season 2 of ‘1923’ be about?
The 1923 finale set up the storyline for season 2. Spencer and Alex were separated on their journey and have agreed to meet in Bozeman, Mt. However, Spencer needs to get there soon to face off against Donald Whitfield, the wealthy land grabber who put the Duttons in his debt.
Viewers will also likely catch up with Teonna Rainwater, who escaped a horrific Native American boarding school. She is headed for a Comanche reservation with her father and Pete Plenty Clouds. The series already hinted at a romance between Teonna and Pete, and we...

This article contains spoilers for 1923 and the Yellowstone universe at large.
Taylor Sheridan is undoubtedly one of the most talented creative voices to come out of television in the past decade. Even choosing to omit his other shows outside of the Yellowstone universe, the world of the Duttons has had a combined seven and a half seasons of cowboy inspired chaos, and it isn’t even finished.
It can be argued, however, that Sheridan is beginning to spread himself a little too thin, and as a result, the first season of 1923 wasn’t as strong as some of his previous shows. There were more than a few moments that were uncharacteristic of Sheridan’s talent and reputation, and certain traps he should try and avoid for the second and final season of the prequel.

Oh “1923,” you thrilling, thoughtful, brutal show. What a finale you delivered. And for us viewers whose heads are spinning from Timothy Dalton’s Bdsm-obsessed bad guy and that heartbreaking separation for Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) there’s so much to process that we need that “1923” ending explained.
The thing that’s so interesting about the Season 1 finale, “Nothing Left to Lose,” written, as with every episode of the “Yellowstone” franchise, by Taylor Sheridan, is that it actually resolves quite a lot even as it sets up that much more for the future. Could it have served as a series finale if “1923” hadn’t already been renewed for Season 2? Possibly. There don’t appear to be plans for a continuation of “1883,” and the production values of “1923” are very much of the no-expense-spared variety.
But the show was a hit, captivating viewers with one of the best romances...

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from the finale of 1923 on Paramount+.
Exclusive: The first season of 1923 ended Sunday with Cara’s (Helen Mirren) nephew Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) still far from saving the day in Montana, while the ruthless Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) informed Jacob (Harrison Ford) that he pretty much owns the Duttons after having paid the property taxes on their ranch. In other words, life will probably get a whole lot worse for Cara and Jacob before it gets any better.

This article contains spoilers for the 1923 season 1 finale.
Much like its very busy creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan, Paramount+’s 1923 is barely taking any time off. After season 1 of the Yellowstone prequel concluded with its finale on Sunday, Feb. 26, production on season 2 is set to get moving soon.
Before 1923 even premiered, Sheridan revealed that, unlike previous Yellowstone prequel 1883, he envisioned this new series as a two-season experience. Sure enough, Paramount+ announced the show’s season 2 renewal shortly after season 1 began airing. Then the Wall Street Journal reported that filming was set to begin on season 2 this spring. The upshot of it all is that 1923 season 2 could arrive by the end of 2023, just as both 1923 and 1883 premiered in December each of the past two years.
Though that level of “end of year” consistency is appreciated, it also means that Yellowstone fans still have a long wait to endure for more Montana madness.
