A vast portion of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire has been offloaded to Disney.
That’s the headline that continues to send shockwaves across the four corners of the Internet, and the Mouse House is just getting started. Having drawn up tentative plans to consolidate its newly-acquired Marvel characters under the one umbrella (read: the Marvel Cinematic Universe), Disney is about to redraw the superhero genre as we know it. And at least according to CEO Bob Iger, whose time with the company will extend into 2021, this cross-pollination won’t impede on Fox’s own slate of adult-oriented and, in the case of Deadpool, hilariously crude superhero flicks.
But costumed crusaders weren’t the only motivating factor behind Disney’s acquisition. As we learned mere hours ago, the House of Mouse will soon gain control of Predator, Alien and a number of other high-profile film franchises, while USA Today has...

The stage door opens and, just as Ari’el Stachel is about to leave the Ethel Barrymore Theatre for the night, a young girl throws her arms around him for a hug to say ‘Thank you.’ “I feel like myself, but then realize I’m having this seismic impact on [her life], and it’s tremendous,” the 26-year-old tells Et of the response from audiences for his Broadway debut as Haled, one of the Egyptian police band members who gets stranded in a remote Israeli town in The Band’s Visit.

Avengers: Infinity War is set to unite every hero on the movie side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe next May, but for some fans it’s just not enough. Ever since the House of Ideas started building its Defenders corner of the McU on Netflix, people have been calling for the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage to team up with the Avengers on the big screen.
Unfortunately, we’ve routinely heard – from those involved on both sides – that this is very unlikely to happen. The latest word on a potential crossover only supports this, too, as Daredevil‘s Charlie Cox attended Ace Comic-Con Long Island this weekend where he was naturally asked about playing the Man Without Fear in a movie. As expected, he stated that there are no plans for this to happen and not only that, but he hasn’t even ever had a conversation about it.

Not all heroes are created equally. Some are supersonic blurs streaking across the sky, racing from one danger to the next. Some cover themselves in high-tech armor, while others blunder into battle half-naked and swinging. Some emblazon themselves with the colors of their homeland, whereas others must endlessly protect a world that hates and fears them for what they are. Some guard the galaxy. Some avenge the planet. And some defend the streets. It’s understandable that after being at the forefront of pop-culture for so long, audiences would start to turn on the superhero craze that has dominated the blockbuster landscape

When “The Crown” star Matt Smith was asked if he knew whether or not the Royal Family has watched “The Crown,” he gave IndieWire a line from classic spy thrillers: “If I’d told you, I’d have to kill you.”
That’s an unusual thing for an actor to say while promoting their show, but Smith did at least clarify that “I’m pretty certain that someone has seen it. In fact, I know that someone else has seen it.”
Then he repeated: “But if I told you which ones, I’d have to kill you.”
While it remains a mystery as to whom Smith was referring, he was otherwise relatively candid about shooting Season 2 of Netflix’s “The Crown.” Smith plays Prince Philip, husband to Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy), in the series.

Though serialized overall, “The Crown” is a notable Netflix series in that it regularly delivers impeccably strong episodic arcs. Episodes stand out on their own and often feel constructed as a time capsule for that specific story. Season 2 continues this tradition, and IndieWire will explore select episodes via individual reviews. After all, the best standalone episodes deserve standalone analyses. Below, we take a look at Episode 2, “A Company of Men.”
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Crown” Season 2.]
Just because a character is unlikable — or downright repugnant — doesn’t mean he’s a bad character. The soon-to-be Prince Philip, after the third episode of Season 2, is the epitome of this conundrum. Many viewers complained about Matt Smith’s character in the first season, though few were mad enough to fault the actor’s performance (and they shouldn’t, given how wholly Smith gives himself to the role). Rather than the darker, more violent take offered by the label's flurry of Netflix shows -- Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, The Punisher -- Runaways is lighter fare, more PG than PG-13 in ratings terms, if any of these shows were rated like their big-screen counterparts. It focuses on a group of privileged teenagers and their problems, as well as their parents and their respective problems. Hey, life is tough even if you're privileged (i.e. have money, which is no small thing in Los Angeles), or so I've been told over and over again by people with money....

The last two superhero team-up projects we’ve gotten were Marvel’s Defenders and DC’s Justice League. While neither one has gotten spectacular reviews, both have their supporters and detractors. So which is better?
Both the Defenders and the Justice League had a lot of potential, but the audience and critical reaction hasn’t been what the companies had hoped for. Marvel’s the Defenders was the least watched of their Netflix series of shows. It only had 17% of the viewership that Daredevil season 2—which is Netflix's most-viewed Marvel show—had in its first 30 days. Justice League is underperforming at the Box Office, bringing in far less money than DC and the WB had hoped. The Defenders has a decent but not great 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but only 63% on Metacritic, while Justice League is floundering at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 46% on Metacritic. Neither is quite living up to it’s potential.

Netflix was supposed to make watching TV easier than ever. But occasionally it turns the experience into a scavenger hunt, and a tedious one at that.
The most recent example comes from a fun yearly tradition between the four series that constitute The CW’s “Arrow”-verse: a mega-crossover event that blends the Greg Berlanti-produced quartet of DC Comics dramas for an epic, effects-laden adventure.
This year’s big crossover, dubbed “Crisis on Earth-x,” featured a wedding, alternate Earths, Nazis, the introduction of a new superhero, some unexpected team-ups, and plenty of kick-punching — all the stuff fans of these series enjoy.
But while fans watching this week were able to enjoy a seamless viewing experience, on par with catching a three-hour movie, future audiences won’t have that option. Instead, figuring out how to piece together “Crisis on Earth-x” will be a far more complicated endeavor.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which character(s) on a TV show that aired in 2017 deserves their own spinoff?
Damian Holbrook (@damianholbrook), TV Guide Magazine
I would be down for a show built around Laura Dern’s one-episode role on “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” as Wendy Hebert, the flaky “mystery bitch” who wanted to marry Rev. Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm). Mostly because Dern is the absolute shit and she should be doing more comedy. And secondly because this could be, as the theme song says, a fascinating transition from the lightly touched-upon trauma Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) endured at her kidnapper’s hand to a darker comedic exploration into the...

The basic premise of the new Hulu series “Marvel’s Runaways” is a bit over-the-top (but easily sellable on posters): What if you found out that your parents were supervillains? However, the mysteries laid out in the first four episodes presented to critics indicate that the series aims to be far more complex than that basic synopsis might indicate, and that executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage have a long game in mind for the show going forward.
The six teenagers at the heart of the series — brainy Alex (Rhenzy Feliz), good-hearted Karolina (Virginia Gardner), lacrosse star Chase (Gregg Sulkin), “social justice warrior” Gert (Ariela Barer), gothic Nico (Lyrica Okano), and soft-spoken Molly (Allegra Acosta) — aren’t exactly friends when we meet them, despite all attending the same upper-class high school in Los Angeles. After The Punisher was introduced into the secons season of Daredevil, the anticipation that he would get his own show was high. Now that it is here though, does it live up to our hopes? The answer for the most part is yes, but read on to find out why Marvel fall into a familiar trap with their new Netflix show…
When Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) tries to leave The Punisher behind him, it doesn’t take long before he has to take action against wrongdoers. When this catches the attention of Micro (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) Castle finds himself once again hunting down the people behind his family’s death, as it seems his vengeance was ended a little prematurely.
While I may say some negative things about the show in this review, it is important to point out that Jon Bernthal is perfect as Frank Castle. He can convey the emotions needed for Frank Castle,...

Marvel’s “The Punisher” might be set within the New York universe that features Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, but it has almost nothing to do with superheroes themselves. You don’t need to have binge-watched this new Netflix series this weekend in its entirety to know – the fact is evident from minute one. The Punisher is a ruthless vigilante, with a code of honor, albeit a very distorted one.

After wowing audiences in last year’s Daredevil season 2, Jon Bernthal is back as Frank Castle in his own solo spinoff vehicle The Punisher, the latest product of the Marvel/Netflix union (which will likely come to an end soon). How exactly does it measure up to its predecessors, though?
Well, while it doesn’t hit the heights of Daredevil season 1 or Jessica Jones, The Punisher is still another worthy addition to this corner of the McU. As you might expect from a show about a vigilante who prefers a gun and a bullet-proof jacket instead of superpowers and masks, The Punisher is by far the most removed from the comic book world of these series. In fact, Frank Castle doesn’t even wear his iconic skull emblem for most of the 13 episode season.

Marvel‘s street-level heroes will remain on Netflix for the foreseeable future, and that’s despite Disney approaching 21st Century Fox to broker a landmark deal.
Early last week, we learned that the Mouse House had opened negotiations with Fox about the possibility of acquiring its entertainment divisions, which would open up the door for the X-Men (and Marvel’s First Family!) to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Those talks are said to be on hold for the time being, but in a follow-up statement, The Wall Street Journal’s Ben Fritz went on record to clarify that, yes, Marvel’s Netflix slate (read: The Defenders et. al) will remain on that platform for years to come, and that Disney’s newfound streaming service is expected to launch with new Marvel shows, along with a live-action Star Wars series.

The latest instalment of the McU arrives this weekend, courtesy of Netflix’s highly anticipated series, The Punisher (check out our review here). After the slight anticlimax that was The Defenders, hopes are high that this new show could equal Jessica Jones and Daredevil and avoid another Iron Fist debacle. That said, don’t tune in expecting to see something interwoven with the wider McU, as Marvel has put the kibosh on any cameos from any of The Defenders.
Showrunner Steven Lightfoot gave a recent interview with Syfy Wire in which he laid out the restrictions that the studio placed on him:

“Bojack Horseman,” especially Season 4, is almost peerless when it comes to a raw, honest portrayal of mental health. His depression and anxiety aren’t deployed as plot devices like we’ve seen plenty of times elsewhere; they’re just part of him and none of it is rubbed in your face. He’s allowed to be, break down, self-destruct, and the show never offers quick fixes or easy answers. “Stupid Piece of Sh*t” is a brutal depiction, even if you don’t suffer from depression or anxiety,...

The reviews of Marvel's The Punisher have flooded the internet today! Like many of you, I'm a huge fan of The Punisher and I've been excitedly waiting to watch this new series on Netflix. The series doesn't seem to be getting the glowing response that I was hoping for. The reviews are mixed. Some critics enjoyed it, while others found issues with it. But one thing seems consistent, and that is the praise for Jon Bernthal's incredible performance as Frank Castle.
You can read through a collection of excerpts from some of the reviews that I've read below. I'm still excited to watch the series for myself, but after reading some of these reviews, it was hard not to lower my expectations a bit. Read the reviews and tell us what you think!

The culture surrounding the launch of “The Punisher” has been an incredibly complicated one, as the Marvel spinoff is theoretically about a character who, in this realm of superheroes, has only one superpower: being very good with guns, knives, and however else you might choose to kill people. It’s so ingrained in the identity of the brand that the show’s premiere was delayed for over a month, following the violence in Las Vegas in October. It’s hard to root for a fictional sniper, after all, after a real-life one has orchestrated this level of awfulness.
But while it made sense to push “The Punisher’s” premiere date, there was a misstep on the part of Netflix and Marvel. “The Punisher” should have premiered on Veterans Day. The series, while technically existing in the worlds of “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” and the rest of the Marvel universe, is far...

Before now, it wasn’t too hard to figure out which of Marvel’s Netflix shows was the best — there was “Jessica Jones” and then everything else. “Luke Cage” started off well but fell apart in the second half. “Daredevil” is goofy fun but totally incoherent. “Iron Fist” and “The Defenders” were both disasters. But “Jessica Jones” somehow managed to be an Actually Good TV Show. Now it has competition, in the form of “The Punisher,” which also manages to be actually just good. That’s somewhat of a surprise — it seemed like somewhat of a bad idea to give a.

The fallout from Disney’s earnings call continues.
Amid news that Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi) has been tasked with delivering an all-new Star Wars trilogy, not to mention the live-action series set in that galaxy far, far away, we’ve now received yet more evidence that Marvel‘s street-level heroes (see: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, et. al) may be pulled from Netflix and relocated to Disney’s new streaming platform in 2019.
It’s a subscription service that’s clearly being angled as a director competitor to Netflix – CEO Bob Iger confirmed today that it’ll be priced “substantially below” Netflix’s current $10.99 entry point in two years’ time – so we can’t imagine the Mouse House will want some of its most valuable assets on another platform.

Well, as much as I don't want to subscribe to another stupid streaming service, it seems like Disney is going to make me. We already knew that Disney would be killing off their deal with Netflix and Hulu and that all of their films and TV shows, including all of the Star Wars and Marvel stuff, will exclusively stream on their upcoming streaming service.
Now, it seems like any future Marvel series that would normally be developed and streamed on Netflix will be moving to the Disney streaming service in the future. I know this was a safe assumption, but hearing confirmation of their plan for it in the Wall Street Journal was still a little jarring.
It kinda sucks to hear that we eventually won't be seeing any Marvel shows on Netflix anymore. I love those shows! Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher!? Yeah, now...

Over the last few years, Marvel has enjoyed a lucrative partnership with streaming giant Netflix, producing successful shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones, which recently crossed over in The Defenders (one of the fastest-watched original series on Netflix). Fans had been hoping that more and more comic book characters would be added to this line-up going forward, but a new report suggests that this is definitely not going to happen.
First off, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Marvel’s upcoming comedy series New Warriors is no longer set to air on Freeform, as was originally announced. Apparently, this is due to scheduling conflicts at the network and while discussing where else the show – starring Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl – could end up, the site disclosed that its “sources” suggest the possible options may be limited. That’s because according to THR, “Disney-owned Marvel is no longer able to sell to outside companies.

Out of Netflix’s four superhero staples – namely Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist – The Punisher has more in common with Daredevil than Matt Murdock’s fellow Defenders.
Granted, the Frank Castle solo series is poised to forgo any and all supernatural elements in favor of a brutal, revenge-fuelled drama, but it’s fair to say that Marvel’s latest spinoff owes a great debt to the Man Without Fear. Not only did Daredevil season 2 offer a platform for Jon Bernthal’s brooding anti-hero, but it also fostered two deeply compelling relationships: Castle and Matt Murdock, along with Castle and Karen Page, who became one of the few people capable of getting underneath the Punisher’s steel exterior.
