In the "Bewitched" episode "Sisters at Heart", the young Tabitha (Erin Murphy) brings home a new friend named Lisa (Venetta Rogers) to stay for a few days. Tabitha and Lisa have become very close very quickly, and refer to each other as sisters. Like with every episode of "Bewitched," Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) and Darrin (Dick Sargent) worry that the new social wrinkle in their lives will expose the fact that Samantha is an ancient, magic-practicing witch and that Tabitha also possesses eerie powers.
The drama of "Sisters at Heart," however, quickly extends past the show's usual shenanigans. A client of Darrin's, a bigoted toy manufacturer named Mr. Brockway (Parley Baer) swings by for a surprise in-home meeting. When he sees Lisa, he is outraged. Lisa is Black and Mr. Brockway, not having met Samantha, assumes that Darrin is married to a Black woman. Because he is evil, Mr. Brockway immediately...

Could renowned attractions such as the London Eye or the Sea Life aquariums be getting their own TV shows?
That’s part of the plan following a new partnership between Brent Montgomery’s media company Wheelhouse and Merlin Entertainment.
Under the deal, announced Thursday, Wheelhouse and Merlin will develop “original entertainment” programs inspired by the various global attractions in Merlin’s portfolio, including The London Eye and Sea Life, plus Alton Towers, Chessington’s World of Adventures and Warwick Castle. The companies said the programs developed would “span a diverse range of genres, including reality, documentary and game show.”
Merlin owns over 140 attractions across 23 countries, more landmarks than any other entertainment destinations company. Wheelhouse, meanwhile, is behind original series for Netflix, Hulu and Max, as well as a wide variety of U.S. cable and broadcast networks. Prior to launching Wheelhouse, Montgomery was CEO of ITV America, which produces international...

Wheelhouse is getting ready for a rollercoaster ride.
Brent Montgomery’s company has entered into a partnership with UK-based theme park and attractions firm Merlin Entertainments. This will see the pair working to develop a slate of original unscripted TV programs based around Merlin’s suite of attractions.
Merlin owns 140+ attractions in 23 countries. Its most notable operations are theme parks such as Alton Towers and Thorpe Park, and its Gateway Attractions brand portfolio, which includes Sea Life, The London Dungeons, Legoland, Warwick Castle, Madame Tussauds and the Peppa Pig Theme Park.
These will be the basis for TV programs that will span several genres, including reality, documentary and game show.
Glenn Hugill, Wheelhouse’s Chief Content Officer and President of the company’s UK division, will oversee the Wheelhouse-Merlin slate.
Furthermore, the collaboration will integrate talent and digital strategies through Wheelhouse DNA, Wheelhouse’s creator-focused division, and talent-management arm Additive Creative.

Wheelhouse, the production, content and talent management firm founded by Brent Montgomery, has secured an investment from Alignment Growth, the firm founded the former Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes and former Warner Bros. Entertainment chief Kevin Tsujihara.
Terms of the funding round weren’t disclosed, but Bewkes will join the board of the company, which owns Spoke Studios, Campfire, Butternut and Additive Creative Partners, and has production deals with Jimmy Kimmel’s Kimmelot and David Chang’s Majordomo.
The company plans to use the fresh cash to attract new talent and pursue strategic acquisitions.
“We are building Wheelhouse as a collective of global creatives who not only shine on their own, but truly want to partner with one another across labels and divisions so we’re thrilled that Alignment’s investment will allow us to supersize our efforts engaging talent in front of and behind the camera,” Montgomery said in a statement.

Brent Montgomery’s media company Wheelhouse has secured its first outside round of funding, landing a minority investment from former Time Warner chief Jeff Bewkes’ investment firm Alignment Growth.
As part of the transaction, Bewkes — who founded Alignment with Alex Iosilevich and Kevin Tsujihara — will be joining Wheelhouse’s board of directors.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Wheelhouse says the size of the investment from Alignment “will enable Wheelhouse to build an infrastructure that attracts industry-leading talent and accelerates growth via strategic acquisitions.”
Founded in 2018 by Montgomery, who was then coming off his sale of Leftfield Entertainment to ITV in 2014, and Jimmy Kimmel, Wheelhouse assets currently include Spoke Studios, Campfire, Butternut, Wheelhouse UK and DNA. Additionally, Wheelhouse has production partnerships with Kimmel’s Kimmelot and celebrity chef David Chang’s Majordomo Media.

Brent Montgomery’s Wheelhouse has some new investors.
The company, which includes production companies including Campfire and Spoke Studios as well as partnerships with Jimmy Kimmel’s Kimmelot and David Chang’s Majordomo Media, has secured investment from Alignment Growth, the investment vehicle from Jeff Bewkes and Kevin Tsujihara.
Alignment Growth, which raised $360M to put into media and entertainment companies last year, has taken a minority stake in Wheelhouse.
The investment will allow Wheelhouse to make acquisitions and attract talent. It marks Wheelhouse’s first outside capital raise since Mongtomery, who sold 80% of Pawn Stars producer Leftfield Entertainment to ITV for $360M in 2014, founded in 2018.

Sunday night’s 96th Academy Awards signaled the end of a memorable Oscar season, inspiring Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery along with news and features editor Ray Richmond and Tariq Khan – prolific Gold Derby contributor and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire – to slug it out one last time over Zoom and mourn the categories that got away in their forecast. But before grieving their misguided last-minute prediction switches, the men discussed what they liked about the ceremony itself. Watch their colorful and opinionated discussion above.
Dixon loved the banter interplay of presenter duos Arnold Schwarzenegger/Danny DeVito and Emily Blunt/Ryan Gosling. Montgomery found it a “pretty solid” show that peaked for him in Jonathan Glazer’s acceptance speech after winning international film for “The Zone of Interest.” Davidson applauded director Mstyslav Chernov’s powerful speech after winning in Best Documentary Feature for “20 Days in Mariupol.

While there remains plenty of suspense surrounding the SAG Awards film categories at the ceremony taking place at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall this Saturday at 5 p.m. Pst/8 p.m. Est (streaming over Netflix), there is decidedly less drama when it comes to the TV categories. It’s simply a fact. At least, this is the way Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Daniel Montgomery and Marcus James Dixon, news and features editor Ray Richmond and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire Tariq Khan saw it during their SAG Awards TV category predictions slugfest this week. The consensus is that “Succession” will sweep the three TV drama categories, “The Bear” the three comedy categories and “Beef” the limited series/TV pair. There may be some non-“Bear” wiggle room in at least one category. More on that in a moment. Watch the editors’ colorful discussion above.

And I kind of want his run to end before it gets sour,” argues Gold Derby editor Daniel Montgomery about Harry Jowsey, who has made it to the top six on “Dancing with the Stars” over celebs who consistently outscored him like Mira Sorvino, Lele Pons and Barry Williams. “He continues to endure in the competition based entirely on viewer votes.” Watch Montgomery’s latest video slugfest about “Whitney Houston Night” with Gold Derby contributors Jeffrey Kare and Cordell Martin above.

Elizabeth Olsen was made a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to the movies’ compelling stories and interesting characters. But there was something she noticed about Marvel in the beginning that might’ve made the series stand out from other superhero properties.

Olsen admitted that she knew very little about the comic books her Scarlet Witch character originated from. But she became a huge fan of the MCU in the universe’s beginning phases.

We thought there was a possibility that “Most Memorable Year Night” on “Dancing with the Stars” would be a non-elimination night, but alas, Oscar winner Mira Sorvino was sent home at the end of the evening. Gold Derby contributor Cordell Martin “was kind of bummed that Mira went home earlier than I think we would love for her to go,” but “she was just one of those contestants … who’s really good, but just couldn’t find her footing in terms of being at the top of the leaderboard or having that strong fan base to carry her through.” Watch Martin’s slugfest with Jeffrey Kare and Daniel Montgomery above.

In its own way, Sol Saks' 1963 sitcom "Bewitched" was a subversive work. Inspired by movies like "I Married a Witch" (1942) and "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" (1957), "Bewitched" followed the everyday, quotidian, brightly-lit travails of a typical white suburban couple named Darrin Stephens and Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery).
The twist was that Samantha was a centuries-old witch, descended from a long line of magic-users. Endora (Agnes Moorehead), Samantha's colorful mother, would occasionally drop in, as would her father Maurice (Maurice Evans from "Planet of the Apes"), and uncle Arthur (legendary comedian Paul Lynde). The witches and warlocks on the show would often attempt to drive a wedge between Samantha and Darrin, but their love would prevail in the end.
Beginning in the show's third season, the Stephens had their first child, Tabitha (Erin Murphy and Diane Murphy). In the sixth season, they were joined by baby Adam (David Lawrence and Greg Lawrence).

Hulu is jumping into the competition-series game with a series that will put people in a house and pit them against one another for a big cash prize.
Big Brother? Nope. The Traitors? Also no. The Disney-run streamer has ordered Got to Get Out, a competition show/”social experiment” with echoes of the prisoner’s dilemma — the thought experiment where people can work together for mutual benefit or go solo for a potentially greater reward. The show comes from creator Glenn Hugill and the U.K. arm of Jimmy Kimmel and Brent Montgomery’s company, Wheelhouse. A premiere date hasn’t been set.
Got to Get Out will feature contestants living in a mansion for 10 days, with a pool of prize money rising by $1 every second (there are 864,000 seconds in 10 days). The players will also work together on challenges to increase the prize money up to $1 million. They can stick...

For Season 3 of “What We Do in the Shadows,” costume designer Laura Montgomery won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes. But when she and her team got to work on Season 4 of the FX comedy series, there was no time for a victory lap. The Emmy-winning series produced some of its most complex episodes yet in Season 4, including a wedding episode that had Montgomery working overtime to complete.
“When the script landed, I don’t want to say it was panic because we always knew a wedding was coming,” Montgomery tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel. “But we were already past our eyeballs in what we were currently shooting, which ‘The Night Market’ episode – which was one of our heaviest [in terms of costumes].”

When you're married to the man behind Ali G and Borat, you have to be able to hold your own when those larger-than-life characters come out to play - and Isla Fisher seems to be managing just fine. The Australian actor is definitely no stranger to turning heads on the red carpet, and she and husband Sacha Baron Cohen are one of the red carpet's most fun couples, whether they're playing it straight or putting on a show.
Fisher and Cohen first met in Sydney, Australia, in 2001. "She was hilarious. We were at a very pretentious party, and me and her bonded over taking the mick out of the other people in the party," Cohen told The New York Times in 2020. "I knew instantly. I don't know if she did." Cohen proposed in 2004, and in 2007, they welcomed their first child, Olive. They finally tied the knot in Paris in 2010, and their second child,...

“There’s only five nominees, which I think is a crime,” Marcus James Dixon declares about Best Limited Series at the top of our Editors 2023 Emmys slugfest video predicting the nominations. “This year, there’s so many great limited series that could fit this category, I don’t know how you pick five.” Before the official announcement of the nominations on Wednesday, July 12, he joined fellow senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Denton Davidson to discuss this year’s limited/movie/reality categories. “I think everyone that has anything to do with predictions knows that this is probably one of the easier categories of the year. ‘Succession’ is probably a 100% lock,” says Gold Derby senior editor Marcus James Dixon about the Emmy race for Best Drama Series. Robbie Montgomery experienced the intense, demanding management style of Ike Turner firsthand. As one of the original Ikettes of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, she provided dreamy background vocals and dazzling choreography to the stage show — and also provided the future Queen of Rock & Roll with a confidante during her abusive relationship with Ike.

Elizabeth Olsen and Meghann Fahy deliver two of the most nuanced performances of the Emmy season, both playing complicated women who are wives and mothers. In “Love & Death,” Olsen’s Candy Montgomery is based on a real housewife in late-1970s Texas, who out of boredom instigates an affair with Allan (Jesse Plemons), a member of her church — an illicit assignation that eventually leads to Candy being on trial for murdering Allan’s wife, Betty (Lily Rabe).
In a very different setting, Season 2 of Mike White’s “The White Lotus,” Fahy plays Daphne, a character on a luxury Sicilian vacation with her husband, Cameron (Theo James), and another couple: Ethan (Will Sharpe) and Harper (Aubrey Plaza). As the tension among the four escalates, it’s both sexual and violent — and oddsmakers were entirely wrong about the identity of the dead body in the season-premiere flashback.

This story about Elizabeth Olsen and “Love & Death” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
What is it about Candy Montgomery that Hollywood finds so irresistible? With two high-profile limited series in consecutive years, the tale of a housewife-turned-accused ax murderer has proven tantalizing. In 2022, there was Hulu’s “Candy,” cocreated by Robin Veith and Nick Antosca and starring Jessica Biel as the woman acquitted of butchering the wife of her lover. Now there’s HBO Max’s “Love & Death,” an interpretation of the same gory tale, written and exec-produced by David E. Kelley and starring Elizabeth Olsen.
Olsen’s interest in stepping into Candy’s blood-soaked flip-flops had less to do with what Montgomery did or didn’t do and more with how she operated. “The appeal for me is that I don’t feel like I know how to use...

The real-life Candy Montgomery became a free woman thanks to Don Crowder, the cocksure personal injury attorney who would represent the Texas housewife in the murder trial of Betty Gore in 1980.
To portray such an integral character in the HBO Max limited series Love & Death starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons, David E. Kelley zeroed in on Tom Pelphrey, the actor best known for playing Laura Linney’s brother Ben in Netflix’s Ozark. The limited series also stars Lily Rabe as Betty, the woman whose husband Allan (Plemons) had an affair with Candy (Olsen).
Here, the actor who also starred in season one of Outer Range talks about why he took the role of the overly-confident attorney — and the sorrow he felt when he learned how the real Don Crowder took his own life 18 years after Montgomery was found not guilty.
Deadline: What was the most alluring aspect of this project?...

Fox Business is shutting down “Kennedy,” the nightly program hosted by Lisa Kennedy Montgomery in the 7 p.m. time slot, and replacing it with reruns of Larry Kudlow’s namesake show.
“Kennedy” will air for the last time on Thursday. The show had a seven-month hiatus in 2020, with the network citing “the demands of the evolving pandemic crisis coverage” at the time.
Montgomery, a host since 2015, will remain with Fox, a spokesperson confirmed to TheWrap. It's been 22 years since Rob Cohen directed a shameless knockoff of Kathryn Bigelow's "Point Break," starring Paul Walker instead of Keanu Reeves, Vin Diesel instead of Patrick Swayze, and street racing instead of surfing and sky diving. And while at the time, the success of the film "The Fast and the Furious" seemed only vaguely remarkable, over the course of the last two decades it has ballooned into a multi-billion dollar franchise, full of epic car stunts, ludicrous storylines, and endless ruminations about the meaning of "family."
Yes, "Fast and Furious" has become a household name, perhaps permanently associated with the blockbuster vehicular nonsense films of Vin Diesel and company. But it was not always this way. The common expression "fast and furious" has been used many times in Hollywood, for films about race car driving, funny murder mysteries, beloved Looney Tunes adventures, and low-budget crime thrillers.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Love & Death Season 1 Episode 5 “The Arrest.”] The walls are closing in on Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) in the latest episode of Love & Death: The Texas housewife was arrested for the murder of Betty Gore (Lily Rabe). Maintaining her innocence at first, the installment saw Candy finally confess to her lawyer, friend, and fellow church-goer Don Crowder (Tom Pelphrey) that she killed Betty after she was attacked by her. Eager to learn more about the situation unfolding, Candy’s husband Pat (Patrick Fugit) also seeks answers and is finally looped into the truth by the episode’s end, when Don calls the Montgomery family’s house and explains the situation to him. Mildly pathetic in his onscreen depiction, Fugit acknowledges Pat’s shortcomings as a husband, which ultimately led to Candy’s affair with Alan Gore (Jesse Plemons), saying, “he is absent as a partner in several ways. He’s also...

The “Stranger Things” cast will be sitting this one out this year.
Actor Dacre Montogomery is the lone representative for “Stranger Things” at this year’s Emmys awards submissions due to restrictive guidelines for the award show voting period.
Despite the electrifying success of Season 4 Vol. 2 of the ’80s sci-fi adventure series last summer, which saw the “Stranger Things” cast fighting the sinister powers of dark entity Vecna, most of the show’s stand-out stars aren’t eligible for the ballot at this year’s awards ceremony.
The new rule occurred in June 2022 when the TV Academy eliminated the “hangover episode rule”, which gave grace to a series that premieres current-season episodes after the May 31 eligibility deadline but before the commencement of nomination round-voting.

Though Tom Pelphrey was already a two-time Daytime Emmy-winner for his work in the daytime drama “Guiding Light” and had been working steadily on stage and screen, his move to “Ozark’s” third season took his career to a new level. He blazed onscreen as Ben Davis, the bipolar brother of Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney), and seemingly shot to stardom overnight. It’s been a busy couple of years for the actor both professionally and personally — his partner Kaley Cuoco gave birth to their first child, a daughter, on March 30. And now Pelphrey is starring in “Love and Death,” HBO Max’s limited series from David E. For the first time in years, Elizabeth Olsen can speak freely.
The actor who spent close to a decade portraying Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe takes on a different role as Candy Montgomery in David E. Kelley’s “Love and Death” — though maybe not that different. Unlike any of her MCU projects, Olsen can discuss this one without fear of spoilers or consequence. Montgomery killed her neighbor with an axe in 1980, and “Love and Death” tells the story of the events leading up to and resulting from that horror.
“Oh my god, it’s so nice to talk about something,” Olsen said, visibly relaxing into a deeply cushioned sofa at the Warner Bros. building in New York in April. “It’s really annoying doing press and not being able to say anything. HBO Max is here with “Love & Death,” its version of the horrific but true story starring Elizabeth Olsen as Montgomery, the 1980s Texas housewife accused of murdering her best friend (portrayed by Lily Rabe) after having an affair with her husband (Jesse Plemons). The limited series, which debuted April 27 with three episodes, is a showcase for Olsen and a reminder to Emmy voters that maybe they should’ve awarded her powerful performance as a grieving Wanda Maximoff on Marvel’s Disney+ series “WandaVision.” She alone is the reason that “Love & Death” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

“Love & Death,” which debuts on HBO Max (soon to be just Max) on April 27, is the second TV telling of the story of Candy Montgomery in less than a year.
The first rendition was Hulu’s “Candy,” starring Jessica Biel in the leading role of Candy and Melanie Lynskey as her neighbor whom she eventually murders, Betty Gore. The series streamed in May 2022, nearly one year ago.
Now, Elizabeth Olsen steps into the role of Montgomery, a housewife from Fairview, Tx., while Lily Rabe portrays Betty, the second-grade teacher. Both shows are based on a true story, explained below. The latest, written by David E. Kelley, draws in part from a two-part Texas Monthly account of the crime.
In 1978, Montgomery was a 29-year-old mother of two when she began an affair with Allan Gore (portrayed in the latest limited series by Jesse Plemmons), who was married to Betty, one of Candy’s friends.

The horribly tragic true story of Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore has been grist for several true-crime dramas. During the summer of 1980, Montgomery stopped by her friend Gore's home to pick up a swimsuit for Gore's daughter. Gore allegedly confronted Montgomery, who was engaged in an affair with her husband. A fight ensued, and, per Montgomery, she murdered Gore in self-defense. The sticking point here is the viciousness of the killing: Gore was struck 41 times with an axe. Though Montgomery was found not guilty, many people in the Dallas suburb of Wylie, Texas believed she had murdered Gore in cold blood, and protested the verdict.

The story, nay, the legend of Candy Montgomery is one that has become synonymous with Texas true crime. What seems like a case of jealous rage on the surface is more complex the deeper down the rabbit hole you go, so it's no surprise that Montgomery's tale has become the latest subject of the true-crime dramatization trend. Hulu's Jessica Biel vehicle "Candy" may have gotten the head start, but HBO Max's "Love & Death" (read /Film's review here) is aspiring to define the case through the eyes of Elizabeth Olsen.

During a currently-archived SXSW Film & TV Festival live stream, Olsen explained that she decided to approach the fictionalized version of Montgomery with an open mind.
