J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth mythology includes several epic and powerful love stories. Aragorn and Arwen are probably the best known thanks to the Lord of the Rings films, plus Sam and Rosie get married at the end, and the extended editions also feature Éowyn and Faramir’s relationship, though that one was a bit rushed even in the books. But book fans also know the stories of Tuor and Idril, Elwing and Eärendil, and the rather more tragic story of Aegnor and Andreth, among others.
The love story that meant the most to Tolkien himself, though, was the story of Beren and Lúthien, which was directly inspired by the writer’s own life.
The story of Beren and Lúthien is one of very few stories about the First and Second Ages of Middle-earth told, in a brief and summarized form, in The Lord of the Rings itself. Fuller versions can...

There is a popular subgenre of fantasy fiction known as “grimdark,” which tends to feature violent, unpleasant settings and predominantly human characters. No one is entirely good or bad, and their protagonists are made to suffer all sorts of agonies over the course of the story. Think George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire (the book series Game of Thrones is based on), Joe Abercrombie’s First Law trilogy, or the works of Steven Erikson.
This sub-genre is often referred to as “anti-Tolkien,” and we can see why. J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, with its noble kings with healing hands, impossibly beautiful Elves, angels come down to Middle-earth to fight the forces of evil, and actual God (Eru Ilúvatar), could never be described as “grimdark,” a subgenre full of amoral people, wicked kings, and flawed heroes, where Elves are either absent all together or thoroughly evil.

This Lord of the Rings article contains spoilers for The Rings of Power.
Episode 4 of The Rings of Power featured numerous references to Elrond and Galadriel’s fathers, but with most of their activities having happened in the First Age, which the series isn’t allowed to adapt, the explanations around them were a bit vague. So who exactly were they, and how are Elrond and Galadriel likely to feel about them by the time of the series?
Elrond does give Durin a basic outline of his father’s story in their conversation in “The Great Wave.” He says that his father “single-handedly sailed to Valinor and convinced the Valar to join the war and vanquish Morgoth.” As a result, “the Valar lifted him beyond the bounds of this world to forever carry the evening star across the sky.”
The Valar are the Powers of Arda; essentially, they are gods,...

The soundtrack for Amazon Prime’s upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is out now, and the titles of the tracks are a pretty interesting collection that might offer us a few hints about what we’ll see in season 1 of what Amazon hope will be a several-season series.
The score itself is really rather lovely and sits very nicely alongside Howard Shore’s scores for the six Peter Jackson movies set in Middle-earth. Bear McCreary, the composer for Outlander, is a great choice for this job. His Outlander score incorporates Scottish and Celtic folk music beautifully into a fantasy drama score, as you might expect for a series about an 18th century Highland community. This makes him a perfect match for The Rings of Power, as Howard Shore was heavily inspired by Celtic music in his work on the films. Shore has written the main theme for the new series,...
