Scream VII is now moving forward without the previous movie's leads, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, and while plot details are still under wraps, rumors have claimed that the story will revolve around Sidney (Neve Campbell), Gale (Courteney Cox) and some new characters defending Sid's family from some kind of Ghostface cult.
There have been conflicting reports about exactly how many masked maniacs will be targetting our returning heroes, but thanks to insider Daniel Richtman, we may have a little more to go on regarding the "younger leads" that are currently being cast.
Apparently, there will be a "big time jump" following the events of the last movie, presumably to allow for Sidney's children to have grown to appropriate slasher movie age. Richtman has also heard that this film will be at least partially set in a new town, and is being developed as the first instalment in a new trilogy.

After many controversies surrounding the production of the upcoming Scream movie, tentatively titled Scream 7, the fans managed to calm themselves down when it was announced that some major stars would be returning to the movie, despite Jenna Ortega’s exit following Melissa Barrera’s controversial dismissal. Franchise legend Kevin Williamson confirmed his return as director, with Neve Campbell also confirming the return of Sydney Prescott. Courtney Cox was confirmed to be in talks for a return, while several other names are also rumored, but nothing has been confirmed on that front. Now, some early reports have surfaced that the film’s production is moving fast, with filming supposedly scheduled to begin in September 2024.
Several industry-focused Twitter profiles have confirmed this piece of information, and Neve Campbell is listed as the source, as the actress seemingly confirmed that the movie’s production will begin later this year.

Update: Variety has confirmed that Courteney Cox is in talks to join Neve Campbell in Scream 7. They didn’t mention Patrick Dempsey in their report.
The original article (published March 25th) follows:
Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after. So now Scream 7 has been re-developed, and it...

Wes Craven, director of the first four films in the Scream franchise, passed away in 2015. So when Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media teamed up to revive the franchise with the new sequel that was released in 2022, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett took the helm. They then returned to direct Scream VI the following year, with both of their contributions to the franchise centering on sisters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed that they had been planning to return to direct Scream 7 and complete a Carpenter sisters trilogy… but they mistakenly thought they could fit the production of their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter) in between the making of Scream VI and Scream 7. Turns out, Spyglass wanted to get moving on Scream 7 sooner than their schedules allowed,...

Not long ago, we reported that the future is looking a lot brighter for the upcoming Scream 7 movie, with Neve Campbell confirming her return as Sydney Prescott despite pay-related issues with the production, as well as Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original movies, coming to direct the movie. Sure, the previous movie’s stars, including Jenna Ortega, left the project, but it seems that the production is heating up for a bombastic, nostalgia-filled sequel based on the rumors we have.
Namely, industry insider Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK) recently reported rumors that two major stars might be returning for the upcoming sequel, which is more than great if you ask us. The first name is that of Courtney Cox, who is supposedly returning as Gale Weathers for Scream 7. And while this is certainly great news, the return of Cox’s character was more or less expected, so this doesn’t...

A few months ago, the Scream franchise seemed dead and buried.
Despite a seventh installment getting the official greenlight last year, Melissa Barrera was let go from the franchise due to social media posts about the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Jenna Ortega later left the flick due to her commitments to Wednesday Season 2.
After losing its two leads, the movie then lost director Christopher Landon.
In a surprising twist in the tale, Sidney Prescott is returning as the main attraction.
Neve Campbell took to social media Tuesday to reveal that she had closed a deal to return for the seventh installment of the slasher movie franchise.
Neve Campbell previously walked away from the franchise
The news is shocking because she famously walked away from the franchise ahead of Scream 6 following a pay dispute.

The Core Four is no more. Although Scream (2022) and Scream VI set up the characters of Samantha Carpenter, Tara Carpenter, Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Chad Meeks-Martin as the new leads of the Scream franchise, that group is not going to end up being in Scream 7, whenever that film goes into production. Jenna Ortega allegedly wanted a substantial pay raise to reprise the role of Tara… and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. So Ortega was out, but Melissa Barrera was on board to come back as Tara’s sister Samantha. Until she was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Mindy may or not be in the movie; we can’t be sure yet, because Jasmin Savoy Brown...

Skeet Ulrich played one of the killers, Billy Loomis, in the 1996 classic Scream – and things didn’t go well for Billy at the end of that film. When the fifth film in the franchise, which was also simply titled Scream, came around in 2022, fans were surprised to learn that not only would one of the lead characters (Melissa Barrera as Samantha Carpenter) be the never-before-mentioned daughter of Billy Loomis, but she would also be seeing visions of her father throughout, allowing Ulrich, with the help of some digital de-aging, to reprise his role twenty-six years later. Samantha was again a major character in Scream VI, and Ulrich again got to make appearances as Billy. Melissa Barrera was on board to come back for Scream 7… until she was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass Media.

What’s your favorite scary movie? For many, it’s Scream. And for probably nearly as many, it’s hard to imagine the franchise without its star, Neve Campbell, who remains one of the most beloved final girls in the history of horror. And while Scream VI suffered partly due to her absence and she’s not currently signed on for Scream 7, Neve Campbell would consider rejoining the series “under the right circumstances.”
One has to wonder just what those circumstances would have to be. For starters, the studio could give Campbell the money she deserves, which is why Sidney wasn’t in Scream VI. With so much going on behind the scenes of the planned seventh installment – one-time director Christopher Landon is out, Melissa Barrera was fired, Jenna Ortega bailed – it might be the perfect opportunity to bring Neve Campbell back, something that fans and even screenwriter Kevin Williamson has been calling for.

It’s been a fraught week for the production of Scream 7. First, it was announced that star Melissa Barrera was fired due to social media posts that were perceived as anti-semitic (an accusation she denies). Then, breakout star Jenna Ortega was also taken off the cast list due to conflicts with her hit Netflix series, Wednesday. Faced with the two biggest stars of the newly-rebooted franchise no longer being part of the sequel, Variety is reporting that a significant “creative reset” is underway, with the hope that original franchise star Neve Campbell will return as Sidney Prescott.
Campbell has long been open to returning to the series after skipping the sixth film due to a pay dispute. Many, including original franchise mastermind Kevin Williamson, shamed the studio, saying Campbell should be paid what she’s worth. Now that Barrera and Ortega, two rising genre stars, are out, Campbell may...

Jenna Ortega will not be returning for 'Scream VII'.The 21-year-old actress has starred as Tara Carpenter in the previous two installments of the slasher franchise but will not feature in the next flick due to a scheduling conflict with the second season of the Netflix series 'Wednesday' – in which she plays the title role of Wednesday Addams.Jenna's exit is unrelated to the firing of Melissa Barrera, who plays Tara's half-sister Sam Carpenter, from the film over comments she made regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. It is understood that Ortega's departure from 'Scream' was discussed prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike as she needs to go to Ireland to film 'Wednesday' in April, which will continue into the summer of next year. The 'Yes Day' actress also has to complete filming for 'Beetlejuice 2' as she portrays Lydia Deetz's daughter...

The world of Scream was thrown into chaos yesterday when it was revealed that Melissa Barrera had been fired from Scream 7 due to social media posts which Spyglass Media deemed to be antisemitic. The actress has now broken her silence in a statement on Instagram Stories.
“First and foremost I condemn Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people,” Barrera said in the statement. “As a latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need.“
Barrera continued, “Every person on this earth- regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status- deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom. I believe a...

The more we head into this new generation of "Scream" films, the more we see the parallels to the original trilogy. Like "Scream 2," "Scream 6" was rushed into production immediately after the success of its predecessor, with mixed results. Both Screams 2 and 6 gave us some of the most exciting and suspenseful chase sequences of the whole series, but they also gave us two messy final acts, both of which probably could've been polished over script-wise if the production had been given a little more time.
The parallels don't stop there: Just like the longer gap between Screams 2 and 3, "Scream 7" is also set to take much longer to release in theaters than its predecessor. It'll also experience a few creative changes behind the scenes, as well as some uncertainty over which major cast members are coming back. In the third movie's case, this ended up in one of...

When news broke that Neve Campbell won't portray Sidney for "Scream 6" due to contract disputes around inequitable pay, it felt like a sucker punch for the fans that grew up with the character famed for rewriting the rules of final girl engagement in horror. Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) first showed us that the archetype could do more than run and scream throughout the "Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise (and especially in "Wes Craven's New Nightmare"). But Sidney revived the idea when slashers were dead-and-buried. (Any diehard "Scream" fan is likely already quoting Sid's infamously quippy line: "Not in my movie.") Understandably, it can be hard to let Sid go, as she lives some suburbia life with Detective Mark Kincaid and her children without the looming killer threat of Ghostface.
But we can forget that Campbell has already done more than most final girl characters in blockbuster slasher franchises. For 25 years,...
