The Killing star Sofie Gråbøl has reflected on how her Danish breakout series redefined “national and linguistic borders” when it came to TV viewing.
Gråbøl spoke with Deadline in the midst of her time leading the Canneseries jury, for which she is judging shows from the likes of China, Brazil and Sweden.
The Killing, which was a smash hit both locally in Denmark and around the world, airing for three seasons between 2007 and 2012 and spawning a U.S. remake, “was a defining moment and a visceral way of showing how TV series can be accessible for all of us,” she said.
“It was something we couldn’t imagine [at the time],” added Gråbøl. “That something so local from this small country could have such interest across the border. We had been so used to importing culture from other countries but suddenly those national and linguistic borders weren’t defined anymore.”

Crime shows can take on many forms. There are procedurals, shows like "Homicide: Life on the Streets" and "Law and Order" (and its endless spin-offs), and then, there are the gritty masterclass dramas, shows like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos." Some favor the process, some the outcome, though all abound with the kind of detached criminal activity audiences fervently eat up. Just look at "Breaking Bad's" 16 Emmy wins.

Mireille Enos is on her way back to AMC, joining Bob Odenkirk in his “Better Call Saul” followup entitled “Straight Man.”
The dramedy, a series adaptation of Richard Russo’s novel of the same name, hails from “The Killing” producer Aaron Zelman and Paul Lieberstein (“The Office”). Enos starred in the “The Killing” throughout its run.
Odenkirk stars as William Henry Devereaux Jr., the unexpected English department chairman of an underfunded Pennsylvania college whose unhappiness stems from his tumultuous relationship with his father, a divided department he’s left to fix and the daily struggles of dealing with an entitled student body.
Variety has confirmed Enos will appear in the dramedy playing Lily Devereaux, the coolheaded wife of William Devereaux Jr. (Odenkirk). A Vice Principal of the local high school in their town, Lily starts to question her career and life path after watching her husband’s life overwhelmingly unfold.

Exclusive: Former The Killing star Mireille Enos is returning to AMC, taking a rare comedic turn as the female lead opposite Bob Odenkirk in Straight Man, the network’s series adaptation of Richard Russo’s novel from former The Killing writer-producer Aaron Zelman and The Office alum Paul Lieberstein.
In the dramedy, from TriStar TV, William Henry Devereaux Jr. (Odenkirk) is the unlikely and reluctant chairman of the English department in an underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt. His discontent is rooted in unresolved issues with his father, a mediocre and entitled student body, and in the fact that his department is more savagely divided than the Balkans.
Enos will play Lily Devereaux, the emotionally grounded, unflappable wife of Hank Devereaux, Jr. (Odenkirk), and the Vice Principal of the local high school in rural Pennsylvania where they live. As Hank’s life starts to unravel, Lily begins to question...

Exclusive: Ryan Phillippe (MacGruber), Mireille Enos (Hanna), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) and Taryn Manning (Orange Is the New Black) are the latest additions to Michelle Danner’s courtroom drama, Miranda’s Victim. They join an ensemble led by Abigail Breslin, which also includes Luke Wilson, Andy Garcia and Donald Sutherland, as previously announced.
The film will tell the true story of Trish Weir (Breslin), who in 1963 was kidnapped and brutally raped by Ernesto Miranda. Committed to putting her assailant in prison, Trish’s life is destroyed by America’s legal system as she triggers a law that transforms the nation. Mireille Enos would love to make people laugh, but she hasn’t really had the chance to do so during her two decades in Hollywood. Her list of credits includes playing JoDean Marquart in “Big Love,” Sarah Linden in “The Killing” and most recently CIA assassin Marissa Wiegler in the Amazon Prime adaptation of the 2019 film “Hanna.”
Not exactly light material.
“I never smile,” Enos says on Thursday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “I mean, season one of ‘Hanna,’ I smiled a little bit when I was with my boyfriend, but it all felt kind of like a lie. You can’t totally enjoy those smiles.”
Someone needs to find Enos a rom-com. “I’ve been kind of saying to people, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to play someone who’s just human, who’s not like wildly competent at any given thing, who...

Amazon's thriller Hanna, based on the 2011 film of the same name, centers on a teenage girl (Esme Creed-Miles) raised by her father to be an assassin and chased by a shadowy spy organization. It's been nearly eight years since Joe Wright's offbeat action flick Hanna hit theaters, but the titular teenage assassin is now returning to the screen in a straight-to-series drama developed by Amazon. The show isn't due to premiere until March, but the two teaser trailers that Amazon released early this year has us curious how this story will be modified for an eight-episode full-length series. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming reboot.
