Godzilla is going through a big resurgence right now. The iconic kaiju is finally an Oscar winner thanks to the masterpiece "Godzilla Minus One" taking home the first Academy Award for the 70-year-old franchise. There's also the surprisingly great "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" successfully expanding the MonsterVerse to television, while "Godzilla x Kong" has delivered some thrilling kaiju action and dominated the box office.
While this is a great time to be a Godzilla fan, the truth is that it's always been a great time to be a Godzilla fan. Ever since the giant monster debuted in the 1954 film of the same name, Godzilla has been an international pop culture icon -- one that is as synonymous with Japan as Pikachu or Mario. Since 2015, Godzilla has served as an official tourism ambassador to the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo, despite the ward having been destroyed by the King of the Monsters three times in his movies.

Pokémon has always been the story of a boy wanting to become the best trainer in the world. The tale is something most, if not all, fans would be familiar with. The world within offers a variety of creatures that are both representatives of the real world and a mixture of the fictional. From Pikachu to Charizard, the range is unimaginably huge.
Ash Ketchum
It has always had the opportunity to captivate audiences with little to no effort, which can make some aspects of the franchise be overlooked. One such example would be Ash Ketchum’s capability of holding and lifting Pokémon with ease. While at first glance, this would seem normal, upon further dissection, it is far from it.

In Princess Peach: Showtime!, Peach quite literally takes center stage, claiming the lead role in a variety of productions staged at Sparkle Theater in an effort to save renown Sparkla actors and reclaim the spotlight from evil Madame Grape and her Sour Bunch followers. It’s a neat hook, as the developers at Good-Feel seem to have gone out of their way to address how Peach is usually sidelined in the world of Super Mario Bros. by giving her 10 parts to play. Sadly, these are far from plum roles, and the game is largely hit or miss.
Showtime! is a structurally formulaic game. The Sparkle Theater’s five floors have four shows (or levels), each one completed by stepping into the shoes (or ice skates) of a specific role and earning you door-opening Sparkle Gems. Clearing those unlocks a fight against a light-themed boss, such as the blinged-out Disco Wing and the Cheshire-like Purrjector Cat,...

Knives Out has become iconic in many different ways. The name Samurai Champloo brings to mind many things: a banging Op, fantastic sword fights, unforgettable characters and for those of us oldies, watching the FUNimation TV channel every week to catch the latest episode. Of course, not everything is historically accurate in Samurai Champloo , as evidenced by the hip-hop soundtrack. The exact year the anime takes place is slightly murky. One episode states there are relations between Japan and the Dutch East India Trading Company, which went defunct in 1798. Another episode features a six-shooter, which wasn’t invented until 1814. A few historic individuals named lived in the 1600s as well. All of this is part of the Edo period, though, so I like to call this “Vague Edo period,” a time when every major event happened and every player on the national stage lived at once. Either way, there are many fun little tidbits of history baked into the...

Both Nintendo and Pokemon hold a special place in the hearts of gamers. Not only have they created some amazing experiences, but they are some of the most early gaming memories many people have. Picking your starter in Blue, Green, or Red while hunching over a Game Boy Color is as nostalgic as it gets for many.
But there is also a dark side to these companies. Both are ruthless when it comes to copyright and are very trigger-happy when it comes to issuing strikes and even lawsuits against their IPs. Disney renewed Goosebumps for a second season last month, with the series transforming into an anthology series rather than continuing the story of the first season. Here’s the logline for season two: “Teenage siblings discover a threat stirring, triggering a chain of events that unravel a profound mystery. There’s nothing more amazing than when a Pokémon trainer catches a legendary Pokémon. The days and hours of planning to join raids with your team and take down a Legendary or Mega beast together… It all pays off.
But what if Niantic gave us such an insane spawn in the wild? Well, they won’t. They’ll probably mask it as a Ditto or Zorua. And to rookies, catching either of these might be exciting till they learn they’re “not all that.” Sure, the catch may knock off some research tasks, but in the long run these Pokémon only serve mostly to get a Pokédex entry, and maybe occasionally thrown into a PvP battle for some low-tier rewards. But then again, that might be just a Zoroark and not a Ditto.

Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! may sound like an isekai in the making, but in reality, it’s a rom-com with a wacky supernatural premise and a couple that’s steadily rising in my personal “favorite anime couples” list. When starting the series I thought I’d get some humorous encounters between the awkward main character, Adachi, as he attempted to navigate the feelings of his “I give Prince Charming a run for his money” coworker, Kurosawa. Those elements are there, but with them comes a story about a guy who gets to realize that he is, in fact, worthy of the attention of everyone’s workplace crush. It’s as encouraging as it is romantic (and magical)! What is Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! About? Adachi doesn’t have much planned for his 30th birthday. The Pokémon Company has released an official statement, presumably about survival game Palworld, in which it vows to ‘investigate’ whether it infringes on its property.
Since Palworld’s announcement in 2021, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have kept surprisingly quiet about the game’s similarities to their own monster-collecting franchise. As the multiplayer survival opus has repeatedly broken sales and player count records since its release on the 19th January, however, it sounds as though the owners of Pokémon have been prodded into giving a response.
In a press release put out on its official website – and available in both English and Japanese – The Pokémon Company responds to “inquiries regarding other companies’ games”.
Interestingly, Palworld isn’t mentioned directly by name, though given the wording and timing, it’s clear what game The Pokémon Company is talking about.
Here it is in full:

Since we last discussed the shocking early success of developer Pocketpair’s recently released Palworld, the game has gone on to achieve numbers you typically only see from new releases in gaming’s biggest Triple-a franchises.
Not only has Palworld sold over six million copies since its release (not counting those playing the game via Xbox Game Pass), but it attracted over 1.8 million concurrent Steam players over the weekend. For context, that is the second-highest recorded concurrent player count for any game in Steam history.
Yet, Palworld isn’t quite the darling of the industry that you’d think it would be given that it’s a historic success from a small studio. Instead, Palworld has become one of the most debated titles in recent memory. A growing contingent of gamers popularly led by longtime Pokémon are arguing that Palworld is nothing but a shameless rip-off. Some of them are...

Palworld, an action-adventure video game by Japanese developer Pocket Pair, debuted via Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview on Jan. 19. In just three days, five million copies sold, making it the top-selling and most-played game on the Steam charts, with players describing it as addictive fun: “Tried it for a couple of hours at 9pm, had some fun, it was then 3am,” reported one satisfied redditor who downloaded the game.
But that customer’s description of the game itself hinted at a point of controversy that has complicated the lightning-in-a-bottle success of Palworld.

Survival videogame Palworld has broken records and sold 4m copies in a matter of days, even as players have noticed its debt to Pokémon.
Released on the 19th January, survival videogame Palworld finally answered that age-old question: what would happen if Pokémon had guns in it?
Players all over the world have clearly reacted strongly to that concept, with Palworld selling millions of copies in the brief period since its release. At the time of writing, sales have passed the 4m copies mark, while it’s also breaking records on Steam, with 1.2m people playing the game concurrently over its debut weekend. To put that in perspective, that’s beaten the peak concurrent player numbers of much higher-profile games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Elden Ring.
The game hasn’t been without its controversies, though. Accusations that its creature designs look a little too close to those jealously guarded by...

Some anime holiday specials are kawaii and warm and fuzzy, even if they involve mutants like My Hero Academia. Then there are those which decide to take the festivities for a sleigh ride into the bizarre. The creatures invited to these Christmas parties range from demons to alien frogs to cats that run a pizza shop and even a talking slime in a Santa hat, and don’t forget Santa flying in a sleigh pulled by a robotic reindeer. Pokémon are already strange enough, but in one particular episode, Frosty has nothing on the snowman as Pikachu and his friends build him in the shape of a Snorlax.
By the way, did you know Christmas cake, which is the pièce de résistance of the parties in a few of these specials, is a huge deal in Japan around this time of year, much like KFC? That episode of Dinosaur King is not kidding.

Netflix is getting into the "Pokémon" business in a pretty interesting way. The streaming service has debuted the first trailer for a brand new series entitled "Pokémon Concierge" which marks not only the first collaboration between Netflix and The Pokémon Company, but it's also the first stop-motion animated series in the history of the franchise. See what that looks like for yourself in the trailer above.
The trailer is, in a word, adorable. There is absolutely a version of the Pokémon universe that is a little gritty and horrifying. After all, many of these are very dangerous animals. This is the polar opposite of that version, with all of the many familiar creatures just trying to relax and looking rather cuddly. Surprisingly, we've never seen the series take the stop-motion approach before having now seen it, as it looks very natural. The brief logline for the series reads as follows:...
