For Adrianne Lenker, love is meant to be a familial undertaking: she’s less interested in its early volatility, the thrills and frills, fantastical projections. She stated it clearly on “Anything,” a track from her 2020 album Songs, when she sang, “I don’t wanna be the owner of your fantasy/I just wanna be a part of your family.” For nearly everyone, our first experience of intimacy and love comes from our family units –“We look at the world once, in childhood. The rest is memory,” poet Louise Glück wrote...

The opening track of Adrianne Lenker’s Bright Future finds the Big Thief frontwoman reminiscing about formative childhood memories, both beautiful and terrifying. But scratch a bit deeper beneath the surface and “Real House” operates as something of an introduction to the album itself, contextualizing its creation within a specific setting, moment, and mindset: “We moved into a real house/A wild field behind it/I wanted to be an inventor/Collected scraps to make a portal/I wanted so much for magic to be real.”
Recorded in a secluded studio in the woods, Bright Future feels stunningly natural, with a bucolic sense of quiet and serenity. Musically, Lenker is accompanied by acoustic guitar, piano, violin, and only occasionally anything else. Using an analog approach, the album crackles and hisses with all the warm imperfections of live instrumentation.

Adrianne Lenker has unveiled “Fool,” the latest single from her forthcoming solo album, Bright Future.
Guided by a muted acoustic guitar line, “Fool” lets Lenker’s wandering verses shine in their purest form. Describing a relationship at a standstill, she arrives at the chorus by requesting “Oh, just say what it is that you want,” and later concludes the track with the decisive “What more can I possibly say? / So if you wanna go I say baby okay, okay.” Throughout, light flourishes of strings pop in and out of Lenker’s homespun arrangement, including moments where you can practically hear Lenker smiling on the mic as she records.
“Fool” also arrives with a similarly homespun music video directed by her brother, Noah Lenker. The video features Lenker fashioned as a winter cowboy warrior with her family and dogs frolicking around her. Watch it below.

Adrianne Lenker has announced her fourth studio album, Bright Future, out March 22nd via 4Ad. Along with the announcement, the Big Thief member has shared the single “Sadness As a Gift.”
Bright Future will be Lenker’s first album since 2020’s dual albums, Songs and Instrumentals, and was co-produced by longtime collaborator Philip Weinrobe. Embracing the unique blend of lo-fi acoustic and alternative that Lenker has become a master of, the album prominently features contributions from Nick Hakim, Mat Davidson, and Josefin Runsteen, all of whom were integral to the album’s sound, according to Lenker.
“I think the thing these people have in common [is that] they are some of the best listeners I know musically,” Lenker said in a statement, reflecting on the live-in-the-room recording process the musicians employed. “They have extreme presence… It felt like everyone’s nervous systems released. Once we were In the song, somehow we just knew.

Last August, Buck Meek shared his third studio album, Haunted Mountain. Now, the Big Thief member is back with two new singles from the Haunted Mountain sessions: “Cuero Dudes” and “Beauty Opens Doors.”
Capturing the same warmth as the songs on Haunted Mountain, the two new singles show off Buck Meek’s songwriting versatility. “Cuero Dudes,” for example, is actually a reworking of the Haunted Mountain track “Cyclades,” featuring new lyrics, or “stories,” and a slightly adapted arrangement.
“Beauty Opens Doors,” meanwhile, has an open arrangement featuring clicking percussion, a flowing soundscape of synths and strings, and — as so-wonderfully highlighted throughout Haunted Mountain — dreamy pedal steel guitar lines. According to the singles’ press material, the song was first recorded during the Haunted Mountain sessions and became a tune that Meek “truly loved,” but it “simply didn’t fit the album.” Now, it arrives into the world, along with a music video for “Cuero Dudes.

Big Thief have shared a remastered reissue of their 2016 debut album Masterpiece, out now via 4Ad.
When Big Thief released Masterpiece in 2016, they seemingly became indie rock royalty overnight. The Brooklyn-based band recorded the album in July 2015 at a makeshift studio in an old lakehouse with producer Andrew Sarlo and engineer James Krivchenia, the latter of whom would go on to become Big Thief’s full-time drummer.
Though its title could be used to describe the quality of the record itself, vocalist Adrianne Lenker says Masterpiece refers to “the masterpiece of existence, which is always folding into itself, people attempting to connect, to both shake themselves awake and to shake off the numbness of certain points in their life. The interpretations might be impressionistic or surrealistic, but they’re grounded in simple things.”
In additional Big Thief news, the band has also unveiled an official karaoke YouTube channel so that...

2024 will be Adrianne Lenker’s year. The singer-songwriter has previewed her new solo album with the lovesick single “Ruined.”

In March, Big Thief stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to debut a song they had been playing live at shows: “Vampire Empire.” Now, on Wednesday, July 19th, the band has released the official studio version of the single. Listen to the track below.
“Vampire Empire” has been a hit among Big Thief fans since videos of the live version began circulating online, partly due to the tune’s lyrics, which speak to the complications of gender expression and queer identity in the context of a relationship. In a statement, vocalist Adrianne Lenker said: “For me, it’s about getting out of toxic internal patterns — leaving the empire of energy drains that obscure pure essence, learning about what healthy boundaries are, and finding the power to implement them for the possibility of giving and receiving (both inwardly and outwardly) unbroken and infinite Love.”
Accordingly, Lenker’s impassioned vocals convey a sense of searching.

Track by Track is a recurring feature series in which artists guide readers through every song on their latest release. Today, Palehound’s El Kempner takes us through their new LP, Eye on the Bat.
Indie rock outfit Palehound has returned today (July 14th) with their latest album, Eye on the Bat. Fronted by singer-songwriter El Kempner, the record finds Palehound as personal and wonderfully cathartic as ever.
While it’d be reductive to call Eye on the Bat a full-on breakup record, the emotional tribulations of navigating relationships give the album a striking sense of purpose. From breaking up on Independence Day to trying to let yourself trust a new person to realizing that “you are the asshole,” Kempner’s writing takes personal experiences and translates them into universally relatable tales.
“I really struggle with letting go and I’m a nostalgic person,” Kempner explains to Consequence. “A breakup...

It is a musician’s dream to win a Grammy, but it can be elusive. Not everyone knows what it’s like to be recognized by your music industry peers in this way. You might’ve read countless pieces on legends like Abba and Diana Ross possibly taking home their long overdue first trophies, but here are four younger artists you should look out for who might celebrate their debut victories as well.
SEEViola Davis opens up about needing Grammy to complete Egot: ‘I wanna win!’ Steve Lacy

Big Thief wants to share the gift of music with students. On Thursday, the group invited educators to reach out to the band so students can watch the group perform — and interact with the folk-rock group — during soundchecks at their upcoming 2023 tour.
“Big Thief is looking to bring an educational component to the touring process by offering open invitations for teachers to bring their students to our soundcheck,” the group wrote on Instagram. “Our hope is that students would be able to come see the soundcheck and ask questions and...

I’ve never felt so naked in my whole life,” says Jacob Slater, the man behind the reins of rock band Wunderhorse. The Hertfordshire-born frontman is centre stage at his sold-out show at London’s Lafayette, 600 pairs of eyes transfixed by him. As he roars through a rollicking set of gritty rock, his face crinkles, his body bucks. Pouring out of him are vignettes of teenage trauma, delivered with a preacher’s zeal. He bares his soul; his heart is open.
“It’s kind of a relief going on stage every night,” he tells me the following day, when we meet in a bar in King’s Cross. “It’s like this is what I’m supposed to be doing.” This is fortunate, given Wunderhorse are currently on the road with Irish rock band Fontaines DC, having previously supported North Shields artist Sam Fender. Both have been enamoured by the...

Sarah Beth Tomberlin has only lived in New York for a short time, but she leads the life of a native. The artist, who performs as Tomberlin, owns a Honda Civic, but she usually leaves it parked near her Brooklyn apartment, choosing instead to wander the boroughs by foot — sometimes 10 to 14 miles a day — while listening to music on her headphones.
“I’m super-content,” says Tomberlin, who was born in Florida and raised in Kentucky and Illinois. “Which is wild, because I had no plan to ever live here.”

Big Thief brought their unique brand of indie-folk to The Tonight Show Thursday with a performance of the song “Spud Infinity” off the group’s expansive double album, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You.
The pre-recorded segment was filmed inside a living room, the cozy setting serving as the perfect venue for the Brooklyn-based group to showcase the quirky-yet-sentimental track. Filled with references to everyday objects and playful rhymes, the song is an earnest meditation on mortality and the many mysteries of the universe. “When I say celestial...

Big Thief beamed in to The Late Show from a cozy-looking living room for their performance of “Simulation Swarm” Tuesday night, March 1. This marked the indie outfit’s second time on The Late Show after making their debut there in 2019.
“Simulation Swarm” captures a potent blend of headiness and urgency, its swirling, droning guitar lines drifting over a drumbeat that comparatively feels like a rapid pulse. Adrianne Lenker’s vocal performance grows increasingly fervent as she sings, “I’d fly to you tomorrow, I’m not fighting in this war...

Imagine a 2022 version of the rustic harmony and song-splurge electricity of Bob Dylan and the Band’s Basement Tapes, and you’ll have a pretty decent notion of what Big Thief are up to on their fifth album. Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You is a 20-song double-lp in which the much-beloved Brooklyn band chases its indie-folk sound all over the backyard in search of new wrinkles and revelations. “Change, like the wind/Like the water, like skin,” singer Adrianne Lenker offers, signaling the album’s mutable intentions at its deliberately lovely outset.

There are few singer-songwriters who can claim a more prolific peak creative period than Adrianne Lenker’s past five years. Since 2016, she’s helmed four albums with her band Big Thief as well as several solo outings, including her informatively-titled recent twin releases Songs and Instrumentals. Like Neil Young in the mid-early Seventies, each one of Lenker’s personal peaks, be it 2017’s tour de force Capacity, or 2019’s ethereal U.F.O.F., turns out to be yet another stepping stone towards something revelatory.
