During Sunday’s three-hour finale of “American Idol,” host Ryan Seacrest cryptically mentioned how Graham DeFranco had to fill in at the last second to sing with superstar Sheryl Crowe. But what viewers didn’t realize is that Graham had replaced Arthur Gunn, who was a no-show.
When asked about what happened with Gunn, judge Katy Perry simply called the controversy another “curveball” for this buzzed-about 19th season. It’s likely she was referring to two other singers who had exited the competition off-camera during the live shows: Wyatt Pike for personal reasons and Caleb Kennedy when a controversial video resurfaced.

American Idol hosted its first-ever virtual finale on Sunday, crowning the winner of Season 18 from a distance of six feet… and many miles.
The first order of business was trimming the remaining seven contestants down to five, which meant the elimination of two more fan favorites. After tallying the nationwide vote based on last Sunday’s episode, Ryan Seacrest announced that Julia Gargano and Louis Knight were going staying home. This left the Top 5 — Dillon James, Jonny West, Arthur Gunn, Francisco Martin and Just Sam — to sing for America’s real-time votes.

The “American Idol” finale airs live on May 18 beginning at 8 p.m. Et/7 p..m. Ct. At the top of the show, Ryan Seacrest will reveal which two of the Top 7 — Julia Gargano, Arthur Gunn, Dillon James, Just Sam, Louis Knight, Francisco Martin and Jonny West — didn’t make the cut. Each of the Top 5 will then perform two songs in the hopes of winning season 18. They will start off the two-hour telecast with an original song. Later, each of them will reprise one of their songs from a previous episode; this will be the winner’s single.
Unlike the previous two “American Idol” finales, this one is not being broadcast live nationwide. That’s due to the drastic change in production because of the Covid-19 pandemic. ABC has renewed “American Idol” for a fourth season.

The Season 3 finale airs Sunday, May 17 at 8 p.m. Et, at which point viewers will first vote to narrow the talent pool down from seven to five and then later crown the winner.

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, “American Idol” had to understandably scrap some of its plans for Season 18. Since the finale of the long-running reality TV show isn’t airing live coast-to-coast as it has the past two seasons, when Maddie Poppe (2018) and Laine Hardy (2019) prevailed, viewers on the West Coast won’t be able to vote for the winner after watching the performances on their television screens. By the time the season finale airs in the western part of the country, the winner will have already been crowned by fans in the east. Have no fear, West Coast viewers: ABC has provided Gold Derby with an infographic (see below) to explain how You can still vote for your favorite finalist in real time.

The 18th season finale of “American Idol” — and its third on ABC — will be done as a live remote for the first time ever starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on Sunday, May 17. Despite having to deal with piecing together a show with performers from countless locales because of the coronavirus epidemic, the show will feature past “Idol” winners and fan favorites as well as actress-singer Cynthia Erivo, the country band Rascal Flatts and more.
However, important business will come first as the Top 7 contenders — Arthur Gunn, Dillon James, Francisco Martin, Jonny West, Julia Gargano, Just Sam and Louis Knight — shrink to the Top 5. Once that is announced, the quintet of hopefuls will each perform two songs, one to celebrate being in the Top 5 and another tune that they sang previously.

Hey, American Idol fans. Last night,May 3, 2020, another episode of American Idol did indeed air, and the top 11 singers were indeed revealed as the judges: Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan did throw in a "save." Tonight's show kicked off with season 11 winner Phillip Phillips singing his song titled, "Home." Shortly after that, they showed Bobby Bones mentoring the singers on camera. Right after that, they revealed that Louis Knight was the first person to make it through to the top 10 from America's vote! Next, Louis sang,"In My Place" by Coldplay from home of course. Afterwards, Katy said, "Your version made me escape to a better time." Luke said, "I wasn’t completely blown away, but I liked your song choice." Lionel said, "Play the camera as much as you can."...

The number of contestants still in the running to become the next American Idol can (almost) be counted with just two hands. Sunday’s episode, the show’s second at-home broadcast, narrowed down the Season 18 pack, eliminating nearly half of the remaining competitors. (There is one upside to performing remotely: No one was “sent home.” They were already there!)
The evening began with an emotional performance of “Home” by Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips, an on-the-nose introduction to an episode about — wait for it — home! Throughout the episode, Ryan Seacrest revealed which singers made the cut, followed by those contestants’ performances...

‘American Idol’ recap: Top 20 sing for America’s votes on Night 13 of Season 18 [Updating Live Blog]
Ten weeks after the third season of “American Idol” hosted by Ryan Seacrest began on ABC, America finally gets a chance to vote as the Top 20 perform on the April 26 episode. As the coronavirus caused the cancellation of the live shows at the studio, the contestants will be performing from their homes. This change in venue means they will have to shine vocally, instead of relying on the production values and the live audience to stand out from their competition.
The three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — will weigh in with their thoughts from the comfort of their homes. To date, they have been the ones who decided who went forward in the competition, handing out golden tickets to Hollywood to more than 15o contestants. Sometimes it pays to be a pack rat. Just ask “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest.
As most fans know, the ongoing coronavirus epidemic has changed the way that the 20 finalists will compete on live shows this season. Just to be safe, they are filming the contestants from the safety of their own homes in towns across North America, including Canada.
Throughout, the three judges — Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — will share their critiques from the safety of their own domiciles on a special episode airing on April 26. In all, filming will be done in 25 locales when you include mentor Bobby Bones and Ryan. The Top 10 will perform on May 3 in the first of three live shows. Season 18’s winner will be announced on the May 17 finale.

When we first met 19-year-old Francisco Martin from San Francisco during his “American Idol” audition in Sunriver, Oregon, he could barely speak to the judges let alone sing. Both Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan walked over to help the handsome lad calm his jitters. But once he settled down and strummed his rendition of “Alaska” by Maggie Rogers, it was clear that this guy was the real deal. Luke wrote down “winner” on a piece of paper while Katy Perry asked him, “Would you faint if I told you you were top 10.” Luke corrected her assessment: “I think you’re top five.”
Rogers, meanwhile, posted her reaction to Francisco’s version of her song on Twitter:

On Sunday night, “American Idol” aired “This is Us” Part 2 special that showcased fan favorites like 16-year-old Broadway-style belter Claire Jolie Goodwin, Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader Kyle Tanguay and Courtney Timmons, who was plucked off the street by host Ryan Seacrest and was given an unofficial audition. As a result, her rendition of Andra Day‘s “Rise Up” racked up 68 million views online.
But the focus was mainly on sharing both seen and unseen performances of such Top 20 artists as Francisco Martin, Kimmy Gabriela, Faith Becnel, Dillon James, Aliana Jester, Louis Knight, Jovin Webb, DeWayne Crocker Jr. and Cyniah Elise.
However, most “American Idol” viewers were probably on pins and needles over which of the two female country artists — Grace Leer or Lauren Mascitti — who were vying to be the last finalist won the most fan votes to compete in the Top 20.
This talented twosome has quite a bit in common.
