Darth Vader didn't always have a red lightsaber. Early concept art by Ralph McQuarrie (pictured below) shows Vader wielding a blueish-white blade, the same as the Jedi. After all, Vader was always a fallen Jedi (though making him Anakin Skywalker came later).
Lucasfilm/Ralph McQuarrie
Whatever the case, the change to red was the right call. The color complements his black armor better, contrasts with the blue and green blades he duels onscreen, and radiates evil. Symbolically, red is also the color of both anger and blood. The red lightsaber is such a memorable part of Vader's presence that when the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy came around, all the Sith Lords there had red lightsabers too. Ergo, red became the de facto color of evil lightsabers.
We first see a lightsaber when Ben Kenobi (Alec Guinness) gives one to Luke (Mark Hamill), saying the blue blade belonged to his father.

This Batman article contains spoilers.
Joker continuity is a bit messy by design. Ever since the Clown Prince of Crime declared that he “preferred multiple choice” in Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s seminal 1988 comic Batman: The Killing Joke, it’s been very tough to nail down just what is true and what isn’t about the villain’s origin story. Was the Joker once a failed comedian who went mad after criminals murdered his family and he fell into a vat of chemicals? Maybe. Or was he originally a crime boss known as the Red Hood? Is his real name actually Jack?
Multiple choice has mostly worked well for the Joker, who is meant to be Gotham’s embodiment of true evil. The fact that his story is indecipherable and ultimately unknowable makes him that much scarier of a threat for Batman. But things are getting a little too convoluted now.

As the closing chapter of a nine-film saga, will The Rise Of Skywalker revisit these dangling threads?
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is positioned as the final film in the Skywalker Saga, a unique trilogy of movie trilogies: the conflict between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in the Original Trilogy showed us the key middle chapters in a story, before the prequels elaborated on Anakin's backstory. The Sequel Trilogy shows us how the next generation of heroes continue to struggle with the dark side.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, writer/director J.J. Abrams described The Rise of Skywalker as a singular challenge: “It wasn’t just to make one film that as a standalone experience would be thrilling, and scary, and emotional, and funny, but one that if you were to watch all nine of the films, you’d feel like, Well, of course—that!”

This week a New York Comic Con edition of Hero Nation Index, Deadline’s weekly round-up of Hollywood news from sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and superhero fare. Also, at the bottom of this post you’ll fid an exclusive excerpt from the Image Comics series Undiscovered Country.
Exclusive: It’s rare to see a Hollywood bidding war for a comic book series that hasn’t been published yet so there was considerable pent-up curiosity at New York Comic Con over the weekend regarding Undiscovered Country, the Image Comics sci-fi saga that doesn’t launch until November 6 but already qualifies as a Hollywood hot property.

Future-set adventure to be published in November by Image Comics.
In what sources said was a competitive bidding situation, Brian Oliver’s New Republic Pictures has paid seven figures for rights to the upcoming graphic novel Undiscovered Country and will develop it as a potential franchise.
Scott Snyder and Charles Soule wrote and Giuseppe Camuncoli served as series artist on the property, which was unveiled at CinemaCon in July ahead of its upcoming November launch through Image Comics.
Undiscovered Country takes place 30 years in the future in a territory once known as the United States that has been walled off after a global pandemic.

The Undiscovered Country is a new series from Scott Snyder, Charles Soule, and Giuseppe Camuncoli!
Scott Snyder and Charles Soule finally unveiled their new comic series at Sdcc 2019. The pair is writing The Undiscovered Country for Image, co-creating the book with Soule's old Darth Vader art partner, Giuseppe Camuncoli. The book is out in November.
“As soon as Charles and I came up with this idea, I knew it was special—one of those ideas that turns into big, wild, world-building story. And this series is just that: a twist-filled trek across a landscape that's alien, mysterious, and full of adventure,” Snyder said during the announcement at the Diamond Comic Distributors Retailer Luncheon.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order stars a new villain originally introduced in the comics. Here's what you need to know about the Second Sister!
This Star Wars article contains spoilers.
The masked juggernaut of a villain in Jedi: Fallen Order has a look which may be familiar to fans of Star Wars comics. She’s the Second Sister, one of the Inquisitors tasked with hunting down surviving Jedi in the days after the Emperor initiated Order 66.
Her first appearance in Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith #19 by Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli introduced the Second Sister to the order of Jedi hunters already established by the Rebels animated series. While comic heavily focuses on the genesis of Darth Vader and his castle on Mustafar, we also get to see the early days of the Inquisitorius as well as a mission in which the Inquisitors steal a Force-sensitive child.

You won't find two of the wildest (and most interesting) members of Marvel Comics' Spider-Verse in the new animated superhero blockbuster Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse. Steve Orlando's Martian Manhunter comic gets a thematic preview in DC's Nuclear Winter Special. Here's an exclusive first look...
DC has been having a lot of creative success with their seasonal specials. Usually they’re a way for fun one-off stories or quick-hit introductions for new talent. And periodically they use it as a way to seed ideas and themes for upcoming stories. That’s the case in DC's Nuclear Winter Special, where we get some stuff from relative newcomers like Amancay Nahuelpan or Dave Wielgosz (an editor on the Batman books who’s new to writing credits); unsurprisingly great work from Tom Taylor and Mairghread Scott; an Extremely Mark Russell framing sequence by perennial favorite Mark Russell; and a stealth intro to one of 2019’s most anticipated comics - a holiday get together between Superman One Million and Martian Manhunter from penciller Brad Walker and writer Steve Orlando,...

Every cinematic villain needs a dark and seedy lair in which they can mull over their evil master plan – and Darth Vader is no different.
The notorious Star Wars legend typically spends his days and nights ruminating within the blackened, obsidian walls of his castle on Mustafar, a far-flung molten planet replete with a waterfall made up of lava.
Writer Charles Soule and illustrator Giuseppe Camuncoli have been delving deep into the dark history of Mustafar as part of their ongoing Darth Vader comic series, and the latest issue hints at Vader’s darkest secret.
But first, here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of The Express:

Writer Charles Soule and illustrator Giuseppe Camuncoli have been delving deep into the dark history of Mustafar as part of their ongoing Darth Vader comic series, and the latest issue hints at Vader’s darkest secret.
But first, here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of The Express:

Marvel Comics is teasing The Age of Star Wars, which appears to be a new comic book series – or perhaps several – that’ll encompass all three trilogies that make up the saga set in that galaxy far, far away. The press release that announced the exciting project didn’t give anything else away, but it did come with some epic teaser art from Giuseppe Camuncoli and Elia Bonetti that captures just about every major character the franchise has ever had.
The announcement also arrived with the promise that all will be revealed at New York Comic-Con in just a few weeks’ time, with the press release saying:
“For more information, be sure to check out the Disney-Lucasfilm Publishing panel at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 5th at 3pm E.T. in Room 1A10!”
The artwork, meanwhile, gives us the three epochs of the Star Wars timeline an official title.

There’s a new piece of Star Wars content on store shelves today, and its name is Darth Vader #20.
Drafted up by a slew of talented Marvel scribes – namely Charles Soule, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Daniele Orlandini, Dono Sánchez-Almara, Erick Arciniega, and Travis Lanham – #20 parallels Vader’s rise with the Republic’s downfall, as the galaxy’s Dark Lord sets about eradicating all forms of Resistance (and the Jedi) so that he and Palpatine can enjoy absolute rule.
There’s also one or two revelations tucked away within the pages of Star Wars: Darth Vader #20, including the reason why Mustafar, the volcanic planet visited by Rogue One and Revenge of the Sith, was chosen as Vader’s permanent residence.
However, ComicBook.com goes one step further to identify a subtle callback to the Star Wars prequels. And we’ll give you a clue: it has something to do with Padme Amidala.

2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story saw the return of Darth Vader to cinema screens and with it came a new revelation about the Sith Lord’s life. We learned that he’d made his home in a chilling gothic castle on the volcanic planet of Mustafar. Though the castle hadn’t been seen before in the Original Trilogy, the planet had wider significance in the saga as the place where Obi-Wan Kenobi defeated Anakin Skywalker in battle, leaving him close to death. In other words, it’s where Darth Vader as we know him was born.
It has an importance to Vader’s character, then, but no piece of Star Wars media has established exactly why or how the anti-villain came to life on Mustafar. Until now, that is, as Star Wars: Darth Vader #20, the latest issue of Marvel’s solo series for the character, ends on a...

Fans who’ve been missing the daddy of all Star Wars villains in the recent movies in the franchise (save his awesome cameo role in Rogue One, of course) should be checking out Marvel’s Darth Vader comic book – if they haven’t already, that is.
Following on from Kieron Gillen’s acclaimed 2015 series, Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith from writer Charles Soule and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli explores Vader’s early days as the poster child of the Empire, beginning immediately after Anakin Skywalker’s transformation in Revenge of the Sith.
The genius of the series is how it joins the dots between the angry love-lorn Jedi Knight that Vader was with the merciless Sith seen in the Original Trilogy. Not only does it show us how he became much darker, but it also teases the cracks in the facade, the hints of humanity still in him that...
