Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
With Amityville Uprising, Thomas J. Churchill joins illustrious company as the only director of three Amityville films.
After kicking off his run with Amityville Harvest (2020) which focused on a film crew interviewing a vampire, Churchill’s second entry was 2001’s “werewolf in a women’s half-way house” title Amityville Moon. Now he’s back for his third film in the “series,” a self-referential zombie outing.
What makes the new film intriguing is less the details of the plot – which include a chemical explosion at a military base with unleashes red acid rain on Amityville and reanimates the dead – but how the film acts as the last part of an unofficial Amityville trilogy.
The same issues that plagued Churchill’s previous entries pop up here: too many characters,...

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
The single biggest recurring question that has arisen over the course of this editorial series is “what constitutes an Amityville film?” It’s the basic impetus to go through all of these films chronologically, regardless of quality or connective tissue to the original film or the books.
It’s also why complaints in the comments that everything past a certain point (ie: either A New Generation or the remake* apparently) no longer qualifies are immaterial and frankly kinda boring. It’s always been more interesting to consider how and why filmmakers are using “Amityville” in their films – for better or worse.
* If the remake counts, then surely The Amityville Murders also counts, no?
The reality is that, particularly with the last few entries in the “franchise,...

Adam Aron, the colorful and outspoken CEO of top exhibitor AMC Entertainment, revealed Thursday in a post on X/Twitter that he had been targeted in a blackmail plot last year.
The exec described it as “entirely a personal matter” and one that is “now closed.” He said he had reported the extortion attempt to AMC’s board as well as law enforcement. The perpetrator, whom he did not know, who was arrested and then sentenced in July.
AMC’s board “thoroughly reviewed these events” with outside counsel at the WilmerHale law firm, Aron wrote. In a statement provided to Deadline, AMC’s board said it “retained independent counsel, WilmerHale, to look into the incident. The board determined it was a personal matter, and considers the issue resolved.”

Just days after Fox Corp. settled the Dominion defamation suit for $787.5 million, the company’s executive chairman and CEO, Lachlan Murdoch, dropped defamation proceedings against the independent Australian news site Crikey, which linked his family to the U.S. Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021.
In August 2022, Murdoch launched defamation proceedings in a Sydney court against Crikey’s owners, Private Media, over an article published in June that named the Murdoch family as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the Jan. 6 attack. The filing came a day after Private Media’s chairman, Eric Beecher, and managing editor Peter Fray put their names on an ad in The New York Times inviting Murdoch to sue them.
Murdoch’s lawyer John Churchill told the BBC that pursuing the case would only benefit Crikey.
“Mr. Murdoch remains confident that the court would ultimately find in his favour,” Churchill said in a statement to the BBC. “However he...

Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch is dropping his defamation claim against Australian news site Crikey over a column that connected him to the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
In a statement, Murdoch’s attorney, John Churchill, cited the recent settlement of Dominion’s lawsuit against Fox Corp. and Fox News in dropping the litigation. In the proceedings, which might not have started until next year, Crikey was poised to introduce material gathered during the discovery process in the Dominion suit, in which Fox agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle the claim and avoid a trial.
“It’s a matter of public record that Crikey admits that there is no truth to the imputations that were made about Mr. Murdoch in the article,” Churchill said. “In their latest attempt to change their defense strategy, Crikey has tried to introduce thousands of pages of documents from a defamation case from another jurisdiction,...

Kozhikode (Kerala), April 19 (Ians) NorthEast United Fc marched into the semi-finals of the Super Cup 2023 after a commanding 6-3 victory over Churchill Brothers, Goa, in their last Group D match at the Ems Corporation Stadium, here on Wednesday.
Colombian striker Wilmar Jordan was the man behind the NorthEast United triumph, with four remarkable goals against his name. So far, he has scored six goals in the tournament.
In Group D, both NorthEast and Mumbai City Fc finished with six points each, but the Guwahati side made the grade by virtue of their better head-to-head record.
In the first semi-final, Jamshedpur Fc will play Bengaluru Fc on Friday, April 21. The next day, NorthEast will cross swords with Odisha Fc.
The supremacy of NorthEast United was never in question, despite the Goa side having more possession of the ball in the initial stages. Jordan was the Guwahati side’s trump card — his...

Kozhikode, April 18 (Ians) NorthEast United Fc will look for three points to stake a claim for the semifinals spot in the Super Cup 2023 when they take on Churchill Brothers at the Ems Stadium, here on Wednesday.
But then, a victory alone will not solve NorthEast’s problems. They would still need a favour from the other match in the group between Mumbai City Fc and Chennaiyin Fc to be played simultaneously at the Payyanad Stadium, Manjeri.
As per the current position of the points table, a win for Chennaiyin would end NorthEast United’s hopes of qualification even if they win their match.
NorthEast United had a disappointing season — they finished last in the Hero Isl with only one win in 20 matches. They kicked off their Super Cup campaign with a loss against Chennaiyin Fc. But a win against Mumbai City Fc in the second match put them back in contention.

Manjeri (Kerala), April 15 (Ians) NorthEast United Fc caused a huge upset in the Hero Super Cup, defeating Indian Super League (Isl) Shield Winners Mumbai City Fc 2-1 at the Payyanad Stadium here on Saturday.
Mumbai City Fc are without their foreign recruits in this tournament and playing with an all-Indian side. While Colombian striker Wilmar Jordan Gil scored both goals for the winners, Lalengmawia Ralte, more known as Apuia, was the lone marksman for Mumbai City.
The result threw Group D wide open with three teams having a chance to qualify for the semi-finals. At the end of the second round, Chennaiyin Fc have three points, and NorthEast United and Mumbai City have three points each. Churchill Brothers have only one point and are out of the running for the knockouts.

New Delhi, March 11 (Ians) On a hectic penultimate day of the I-League 2022-23, Mohammedan Sporting displayed the best performance, beating bottom-placed Sudeva Delhi 5-2, but Aizawl Fc gained the most, despite dropping points in a 2-2 draw with Mumbai Kenkre Fc.
Neroca Fc went down at home to Churchill Brothers 0-1 while Real Kashmir Fc beat Rajasthan United 1-0 as four matches were played across the country on a busy day.
Mohammedan Sporting registered a 5-2 win over wooden spooners Sudeva Delhi at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata. Nigerian forward Abiola Dauda’s hat trick was the main reason behind that emphatic victory.
But they had to be content with the eighth spot in the final standings as later on Saturday, Aizawl fought for a 2-2 draw against the other relegated team – Mumbai Kenkre Fc.
Thus, both Mehrajuddin Wadoo’s Mohammedan Sporting and Caetano Pinho’s former Hero I-League champions finished on 26 points,...

Helen Mirren hasn’t played that many historical characters in her storied career. But somehow when she has, she not only brings exemplary acting skill but also an imposing regality, obviously handy when she’s playing monarchs like queens Elizabeth I and II as well as Catherine the Great. That said, surely I’m not the only viewer who has felt that sometimes her portrayals of, say, Alma Hitchcock (in Hitchcock) or Hedda Hopper (Trumbo) are flattering to the women she’s impersonating because Mirren, in addition to being a great performer, is and always has been a great beauty. Her Elizabeth I in The Audience and The Queen, both written by The Crown’s creator Peter Morgan, is the Og screen Lilibet — wry, haughty … and too glam by half, even in a dowdy Barbour jacket and headscarf. Cheekbones will out.

For casual moviegoers, there may only be a peripheral connection between the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category at the Oscars and the lead acting contenders on which that makeup is applied and whose hair is styled. For the longest time, this race was all about the special FX makeup, prosthetics and the like for genre films. The original 1968 “Planet of the Apes,” Rick Baker’s work on “An American Werewolf in London” in 1981, and the makeup effects for David Cronenberg’s “The Fly” are all examples of that.

The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Makeup and Hairstyling predictions.).

The actor answers your questions, from his memorable impersonation of a sloth at Rada to what it was like having to execute one of his son’s best friends
I’ve heard there’s a module at Rada about becoming the embodiment of an animal. Legend has it you were incredible and people would strive to witness it. What animal were you and what process did you go through? spikeboy
I remember I wasn’t that particularly keen on it, so I think I was a sloth so I could just curl up in the corner and pretend I was on a tree and just shift up a bit every 20 minutes. We had a wonderful teacher but I’d had enough of some of the more modern dance stuff, so I used the animal thing as an exercise in having a bit of a kip.
We really enjoyed the Turner and Lowry films.

Multi-award-winning actor John Lithgow's portrayal of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in Netflix's "The Crown" has earned him high praise and applause from fans and critics. The actor won several accolades for his appearance in the period drama series, in which he starred alongside Claire Foy, who played Queen Elizabeth II. Lithgow delivered a distinctive version of the real-life figure, who has been re-created on the screen over 200 times.
Despite being American, the actor made a compelling case for Britain's most recognizable politician. When asked about his experience playing Winston Churchill in the critically acclaimed drama series, the actor revealed why he was selected to play the part.
Lithgow's An Englishman At Heart
In an interview with GQ, John Lithgow suggested he was an Englishman at heart — and the revered performer had ties to the United Kingdom. During his early days as an actor, Lithgow attended drama school in London.

Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch filed suit against Australian news site Crikey on Tuesday over an opinion column that connected the Murdochs to the siege of the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.
The statement of claim was filed in Federal Court of Australia.
After receiving legal threats from Murdoch’s attorney, Crikey challenged him to file the suit and test of Australia’s “too restrictive” defamation laws. Crikey ran a full-page ad in The New York Times on Monday, as Eric Beercher, the chairman of its parent company, Private Media, said that it was “looking forward to meeting Lachlan Murdoch in court, as he has foreshadowed, to test the defamation laws he and his editors constantly complain about.”
