After giving everyone a case of the chills because of his performance as Charlie Cullen in The Good Nurse, Eddie Redmayne is ready to kill again. Redmayne will star in The Day of the Jackal series, a new project destined for Peacock and Sky. The concept is a reimagining of the 1973 film adaptation from Universal Pictures. In The Day of the Jackal, Redmayne plays the Jackal, a professional assassin hired by a French paramilitary dissident to kill French President Charles de Gaulle in 1962.
Inspired by Frederick Forsyth’s novel of the same name (and Universal’s film adaptation), the new version brings the character and story to a contemporary setting, letting our corrupt geo-political landscape loose in a world of deception, lies, cover-ups, and death. In addition to telling an intriguing tale of careful murder, The Day of the Jackal series will meditate on the concept of an anti-hero.

Since the enormous popularity surrounding Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe has never waned in the seven decades since they both rocketed to superstardom, it’s no wonder that Austin Butler and Ana de Armas sailed to Oscar nominations for portraying them in the 2022 films “Elvis” and “Blonde.” What is odd, however, is that the respective Best Actor and Best Actress hopefuls are the only ones nominated in any of this year’s acting categories for playing real people. While this 90 percent fictional character rate is far from unprecedented, it does stand in stark contrast to the preceding decade’s average of 59 percent and thus raises questions as to why academy voters chose to veer in the opposite direction.
The last instance of two or fewer portrayals of real people leading to Oscar nominations in the same year involved 2003 Best Actress champ Charlize Theron, whose “Monster” character, Aileen Wuornos, stood completely...

Andrew Garfield and Eddie Redmayne had a hard time pulling it together at the 2023 SAG Awards. The longtime friends reunited at the award show in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, laughing while posing for photos on the red carpet. At one point, Redmayne cracked Garfield up as he appeared to make some sort of cheeky remark while pointing his finger.
The actors have been friends since before they were famous. Redmayne actually lived with Jamie Dornan early on in his career, and Garfield was a frequent visitor, along with Robert Pattinson, Charlie Cox, and Tom Sturridge. "We would always go and hang out and play," Redmayne said in a "Tonight Show" appearance last year. "And none of us got jobs. And then someone would get a job and sort of go stratospheric, and then the rest of us would sit back."

Though many prognosticators do their best to try and predict who will be nominated for Academy Awards, there are always a few shockers — both good and bad — when the names are finally announced. This year’s nominations for the 95th annual Academy Awards saw its fair share of shockers. Actors like Andrea Riseborough, Brian Tyree Henry and Paul Mescal found themselves landing their first nominations against tough competition. Then there were notable omissions, like a lack of female directors making the cut after seeing both Chloe Zhao and Jane Campion take home the prize in the last two years.
Here, Variety breaks down the biggest snubs and surprises of the 2023 Oscar nominations.

Eddie Redmayne turned in one of the subtler but ultimately shocking serial killer portrayals, starring with Jessica Chastain in the Tobias Lindholm-directed Netflix drama The Good Nurse. In the movie based on actual events, Redmayne’s Charlie Cullen goes from a non-descript night nurse who becomes a lifesaving friend to co-worker Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain), until she realized her pal might be killing patients who should be recovering. He would ultimately confess to killing about 40 people, and drew 18 executive life sentences, while the hospital administrators who quietly dismissed him even though they had their suspicions were not punished for the cover-up.
In Redmayne, this is the kind of versatility you might expect from an actor who’s won the Oscar, Tony, Golden Globe, BAFTA and two Laurence Oliver awards and in turns such as Cabaret onstage, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Here, Redmayne discusses the opinions he...

Almost a decade into the true crime renaissance, appetites for fresh content – particularly of the white male serial-killer-next-door variety – remain insatiable. In December, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” became the second most-watched English-language show in Netflix history, while Ted Bundy, the subject of two new movies in 2021, is more or less his own subgenre.
The latest hit is “The Good Nurse,” which debuted on Netflix in November and recently picked up a Golden Globe nomination for star Eddie Redmayne. Directed by Tobias Lindholm, it follows Charles Cullen, who is serving 18 consecutive life sentences for killing as many as 40 New Jersey hospital patients and is suspected of killing hundreds more.
All the reasons why his story was destined to be made into a movie – the number of victims, his unusual methodology, the fact that he hid in plain sight for so long – were the same reasons Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne...

In statements made since his arrest, convicted serial murderer Charlie Cullen has attested that he poisoned patients because he thought that otherwise they would go into cardiac arrest, and he was appalled by witnessing attempts at resuscitation. This dramatisation of his final months – the period in which he was working at Somerset Medical Center in New Jersey – never directly suggests a motive, but opens with such a scene, full of clamour and distress. Though the individual being treated is off camera, obscured by a wall, we see enough to understand how some people might find the experience traumatic. It’s about the only creative moment in this otherwise rather flaccid, by-the-numbers true crime film.
Eddie Redmayne plays Cullen, immersing himself in the character with his usual skill, so committed that he likely doesn’t notice or doesn’t care that the man is inherently very boring. Though he manages to come across.

‘The Good Nurse’ Star Eddie Redmayne Found Humanity in the Inhumane for the Netflix True Crime Drama
Click here to read the full article.
In Tobias Lindholm’s Netflix drama The Good Nurse, Eddie Redmayne plays real-life serial killer Charlie Cullen, who at first seems like a sweet, docile hospital nurse until it’s revealed over the course of the film that he’s been stealthily killing perhaps hundreds of patients — for no apparent reason. Fellow Oscar winner Jessica Chastain stars as Cullen’s colleague Amy Loughren, who discovers Cullen’s crimes and fights a corrupt medical system to expose him.
Loughren’s fight served as the subject of Charles Graeber’s nonfiction book of the same name, which became the basis for the script by Krysty Wilson-Cairns (a best screenplay Oscar nominee for 1917). Loughren met with both Redmayne and Chastain prior to filming and even visited the set. After six years of production, with stops and starts as funding came and went, her story is finally out in the world.

And, hilariously, the genial Brit somehow lights up even more when asked why he took on the role of Charles Cullen, potentially America’s most prolific serial killer, for the Netflix drama.
Me: “This is so not an Eddie Redmayne role. You’re a serial killer!” Redmayne: “Oh, that’s like the loveliest thing you could possibly say!”

Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse,” now streaming on Netflix, features a chilling performance from Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne. In the true-crime drama, he plays serial killer Charles Cullen, a nurse who supposedly murdered hundreds of patients while in his care. Jessica Chastain plays Amy Loughren, a single mother and fellow nurse at Parkfield Memorial Hospital in New Jersey who uncovers Charles’ killings. Check out an exclusive featurette below, courtesy of Netflix, highlighting the challenges that went into Redmayne’s many-layered turn, which marks his creepiest role to date.

Nurse Amy Loughren is shocked when Charlie Cullen, one of her colleagues, is found responsible for the murder of dozens of patients over a period of sixteen years, across two states and nine hospitals, without being charged.
There’s a certain atmosphere present in Tobias Lindholm‘s The Good Nurse that will leave you feeling deeply disturbed and uncomfortable throughout every single minute of its over two-hour running time. Lindholm and screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns have crafted a film that feels so sickening to the point where you can barely stomach it. It’s made even more freaky when you consider the fact that it’s all based on a true story.
The Good Nurse is the definition of a slow-burning crime drama that will leave you guessing at nearly every turn.

So for Halloween weekend, what’s an excellent setting for some creepy cinema chills? Sure, big creaky dark mansions are usually the “go-to” locale, and if they’re next to, or even attached to, a crumbling cemetery, well they fit the bill…in many flicks. But what about a public place, not the museums (as in the Night series), or a shopping mall (as in the original classic Dawn Of The Dead)? In this fright film, the main action occurs in a hospital. And unlike the second in the series, Halloween II, the shocks are more than doubled because this new one is a true story (or the “inspired by true events” genre). Oh, but this location is dedicated to healing and helping, right? And that’s the really frightening aspect. But the whole thing is not overly exploitive thanks to the Oscar-winning duo who portray a pair of healthcare workers.

With a score of 77 on Rotten Tomatoes, let’s look at what some critics are saying.
According to Gold Derby’s odds, Redmayne is in the best position to return to the Oscars for playing against type in this sinister role. Eddie Redmayne’s children aren’t that impressed by his acting career. So he was caught off guard when his six-year-old daughter asked him if he was a wizard. Though she has never seen any of the “Fantastic Beasts” movies, in which Redmayne stars as Ministry of Magic employee Newt Scamander, she had just caught a bit of a trailer.
Redmayne tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that he wasn’t sure how to respond. “That’s one of those moments in life where, partly you want to be the cool dad and go, ‘Yeah, I’m a wizard!’ and the other part of you doesn’t want to lie to your children and set them off in the wrong direction,” Redmayne recalls.
The Oscar winner then tried to showcase his sorcery skills. “I got out a coin and did a slightly shoddy magic trick to make the coin disappear and she was like,...

Jessica Chastain plays the titular character in "The Good Nurse," which is not an ironic title for the true crime story. Based on Charles Graeber's book, nurse Amy Loughren (Chastain) discovers her friend, Charlie Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), is murdering patients. It's a horrifying story that screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns initially wasn't interesting in telling. Once she read Charles Graeber's book about the case, though, she had to write the screenplay, which was eventually directed by filmmaker Tobias Lindholm.
Krysty Wilson-Cairns is the Academy Award-nominated screenwriter behind "1917." Over the last few years, she co-wrote "Last Night in Soho" and also worked on "Penny Dreadful." She's a standout writer for a variety of reasons, including the fact she's often on set collaborating with the directors. It's a rare experience she recently told us about in an interview about "The Good Nurse," her past work, and letting actors act.

Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain went through weeks of nursing school to prepare for Netflix’s The Good Nurse, a gripping drama based on the horrifying true story of serial killer Charles Cullen. Charles was employed as a nurse for 16 years, and over the course of his career is thought to have killed 400 patients. He confessed to killing 40 patients and is confirmed to having murdered 29.
Redmayne stars as the prolific serial killer who managed to operate under the radar for more than a decade. Chastain plays heroic nurse Amy Loughren who befriended Charlie before realizing he was killing patients. Amy went to the police with her suspicions and her willingness to wear a wire provided the evidence the police needed to make an arrest.

When Oscar winner Redmayne sat down in his first production meeting for “The Good Nurse,” his daughter had just been born. His daughter is 6 now as the feature is finally seeing its Netflix debut on Oct. 26.
“It’s been a passion project, and it’s been one of those projects that each step of the way has been massively enjoyable, despite the intensity of the subject matter,” Redmayne says. The feature, directed by Tobias Lindholm, is inspired by the true crimes of nurse Charlie Cullen who was investigated by nurse Amy Loughren, played by Jessica Chastain.
“With this film, I was really lucky that, firstly, I was able to meet the real Amy Loughren,” Redmayne says.

A private screening of “The Good Nurse” was held at the Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles on Friday, October 14 with stars Eddie Redmayne, Jessica Chastain and Nnamdi Asomugha as well as director Tobias Lindholm, writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns and one of the film’s subjects, Amy Loughren. The event was presented by Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield and included a Q&a panel discussion following the Netflix film.
“I wasn’t aware [of the story],” Chastain admitted. “I live in New York and this happened in New Jersey. I was shocked when I read the screenplay and figured a lot of it had to have been made up. It felt too strange to be real, and surprising that the most prolific serial killer in the history of the United States, I didn’t know anything about. He killed probably around 400 people. It was wonderful to do the research, to meet Amy and it was very inspiring to work on.

Plot: Amy (Jessica Chastain), a compassionate nurse, discovers that her co-worker and friend, Charlie (Eddie Redmayne), may be responsible for the death of a patient. Little does she know; the truth runs deeper.
Review: The Good Nurse is one of Netflix’s big October releases, and it’s fitting that the streamer would release this in time for Halloween as, despite not being a horror movie in the traditional sense, it’s pretty damn terrifying. For those not in the know, the film is based on the exploits of Charlie Cullen, a notorious serial killer responsible for the deaths of at least forty people, but, ultimately, the number might be closer to 400. If this number is anywhere near accurate, he may be the most prolific serial killer in history.
What makes The Good Nurse especially terrifying is that the fact-based drama makes it clear that the medical establishment could have...

Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne, stars of the upcoming drama film coming to Netflix, The Good Nurse, were recently in London for a special screening and a Q&a about the film.
Chastain wore a cream/beige colored sleeveless waistcoat, while Redmayne sported a very comfy looking sweater under a button-up shirt.
In the film, Chastain plays the nurse Amy, who becomes close friends with Redmayne’s Charlie Cullen. She later discovers, however, that Cullen may be responsible for a series of horrific deaths at their hospital.

For better or worse, Netflix has made a lot of noise during these early days of awards season with the acclaimed Toronto International Film Festival premiere of “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and the divisive Venice Film Festival debuts for “Bardo,” “Blonde,” and “White Noise.” But it’s one of the streamer’s inconspicuous titles that could ultimately prove undeniable to awards season voters: “The Good Nurse,” which premiered in Toronto on Sunday with strong reviews for its two stars, Oscar winners Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne.
Calling the Netflix release “one of the best films of 2022,” Deadline awards expert and reviewer Pete Hammond wrote that Chastain is “terrific” in “The Good Nurse,” but reserved his biggest huzzahs for Redmayne. “Redmayne, playing the kind of dark character we have never seen him do before, is simply astonishing bringing an eerie vocal tone and specific physicality to the role that will give you chills.

Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne passed through the Toronto Film Festival Monday morning where they discussed their true-crime thriller The Good Nurse.
The film centers on Amy Loughren (Chastain), a nurse who starts to believe that her colleague Charlie Cullen (Redmayne) is responsible for a series of mysterious patient deaths and risks her own life to uncover the truth.
“The thing I liked so much about the film is that we see so often films about a serial killer or a story and its fetishized,” Chastain said while discussing why she joined the project. “You’d see him injecting the bags and I’ve always felt a little dirty watching that stuff. I don’t wanna celebrate or have the media glorify what happened to another human being. I wanna celebrate humanity, which is why I was excited about this.”

First a little warning. I had the good fortune to see The Good Nurse knowing absolutely nothing about it except it was a Netflix movie starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne. I had no idea which one was even “the good nurse” of the title, and I was not familiar with the book it is based on, or even the fact it is actually a true story. For all I knew it was like a female version of Freddie Highmore in The Good Doctor. Netflix set up a screening for me at a local screening room. I sat by myself for two hours stunned by what I was seeing slowly take place, a turn of events I did not see coming as I realized I had the same experience in some ways as a viewer as Chastain’s character, Amy Loughren, had in real life.
