Here There Be Monsters | Pirates 5 director’s sci-fi film inspired by The Thing and Jaws (exclusive)
Director Joachim Rønning talks exclusively to us about his original sci-fi project, Here There Be Monsters, which will be a nautical take on Jaws and The Thing.
First announced in 2018, Here There Be Monsters was billed as an original sci-fi project co-written by Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales co-director Joachim Rønning. At the time, little was revealed about its plot beyond it being a genre film set at sea.
Speaking to Film Stories ahead of the release of his latest movie, the period biopic Young Woman And The Sea, however, Rønning has revealed a telling new detail about Here There Be Monsters. Confirming that it’ll be set at sea – something of a signature location for the Norwegian filmmaker – Rønning added that it’s inspired by a couple of monster movies you might have heard of.

This post contains spoilers for the "Dirty Harry" films.
Don Siegel's "Dirty Harry" changed cop movies forever upon its release in 1971. Capitalizing on the "law and order" craze stoked by President Richard Nixon, which was a reaction to the perceived anarchy of the various protest movements of the 1960s, Clint Eastwood's Miranda rights-flouting Harry Callahan fed conservative moviegoers a big, juicy slab of red meat. It also allowed the actor to flourish in a genre outside of Westerns, thus expanding his appeal and turning him into one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.
"Dirty Harry" ends with Callahan, having caught and killed (in self-defense) a vicious serial killer, hurling his badge into a quarry. Throughout the movie, his hard-driving, occasionally extrajudicial methods, which could've resulted in a swift arrest and saved multiple lives, are decried by his superiors. It appears the inspector has had enough. Audiences, however,...

"The Whale," is a controversial and devastating film that seems to be going in an obvious direction, but a growing undercurrent of hope leaves viewers guessing about where exactly our protagonist will end up. Charlie (Brendan Fraser) is an online schoolteacher whose binge eating has cost him his mobility, his health, the possibility of regular human interaction, and any semblance of normalcy. When he finally starts suffering from congestive heart failure and refuses to go to the hospital, he is given a prognosis of just a few remaining days. Charlie doesn't change his ways or seek proper medical attention, but he does finally reach out to his estranged daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink).
At their first meeting in years, the callous teenager challenges her father to walk toward her without the assistance of his walker. He fails at first, but in the final moments of the movie, he actually succeeds. As...

Dick Butkus, one of the most celebrated linebackers in NFL history who played eight seasons for the Chicago Bears before turning to a career as an actor and sports commentator, died Thursday in Malibu. He was 80 years old.
The Butkus family released a statement through the Chicago Bears organization, confirming his death.
“The Butkus family confirms that football and entertainment legend Dick Butkus died peacefully in his sleep overnight at home in Malibu, California. The Butkus family is gathering with Dick’s wife Helen. They appreciate your prayers and support,” the statement reads.
A Chicago native, Butkus was drafted by his hometown team in 1965 after a breakthrough college football career that saw him lead the University of Illinois to a Rose Bowl victory in 1963. During his time with the Bears, Butkus twice won defensive player of the year, appeared in eight Pro Bowls and was named to first-team All-Pro five times.

Brendan Fraser won best actor for his leading role in "The Whale" on March 12 at the Oscars, and I hated it. Fraser was awarded for a role where he puts on a fat suit and pretends to choke on fried chicken and sandwiches and pizza. It's a movie where he literally eats himself to death, and it's portrayed as some sort of metaphor for love and redemption. Fraser and director Darren Aronofsky have said repeatedly that they wanted the movie to show the humanity of fat people, to invoke empathy toward them, but the movie fails to do anything close. And Fraser's win is the cherry on top - the affirmation from Hollywood that this is a good, worthwhile film and performance.
There's something kind of gross about how every time I talk about my issues with "The Whale," I feel pressured to hedge it. "Oh but I love Brendan though,...

A whale, apparently the only one of its kind, wandering the Pacific and persistently calling with no answer, is the subject of Joshua Zeman’s documentary The Loneliest Whale: The Search For 52, or more precisely, a search for the whale no one had ever seen. That search of the seas aboard a ship named Truth is the framing devise, but director Zeman also examines at the human response to the whale’s plight, anthropomorphized reaction reflecting at a time when people were talking about social media and loneliness, as well as a brief exploration of humankind’s history with whales. Renowned Texas singer-songwriter/visual artist Terry Allen has announced Just Like Moby Dick, his first album since 2013’s Bottom of the World. Featuring his longtime Panhandle Mystery band, Just Like Moby Dick was co-produced by Charlie Sexton and includes songs co-written by Joe Ely and Dave Alvin.
Allen has released two previews of the album, including the plainspoken sing-along ballad “Death of the Last Stripper,” which recalls the songwriter’s evocative narratives on cult-classic albums like 1979’s Lubbock (On Everything). Additionally, Allen has put out the song “City of the Vampires.

To mark the release of Moby Dick on 11th November, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Based on Herman Melville’s Great American Novel, and adapted for the screen by Sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury and John Huston, Peck stars as Captain Ahab, a man who pits himself against the awesome power of the sea in his obsessive quest to destroy the Great White Whale known as ‘Moby Dick’.
In 1841 a young Ishmael (Richard Basehart) signs up for service aboard the Pequod, a whaling ship under the command of Captain Ahab (Gregory Peck). On a previous voyage Ahab lost his leg during an attack by ‘Moby Dick’ and is desperate for revenge. Star Wars Resistance Season 2 Episode 4
For a little while, “Hunt On Celsor 3” begins to finally showcase the growing frustrations and desperations of the regular citizens on the Colossus. The food (and drinks) are all but depleted, and people are shouting angrily in the streets, with Aunt Z more or less leading the would-be mob. Captain Doza is doing his best to quell the hostility, but threats of leaving the base/ship begin to rise.
The people protest in simplistic terms, but while they have an idea of their pursuit by their First Order, they don’t seem to be aware of their full danger. Aunt Z says she’ll take her chances “out there,” and Captain Doza can’t really blame them,...

When Tom Petty died in October 2017, he left behind a vault overflowing with hundreds of hours of unheard music. Much of it came from concerts, but there were also tons of demos, alternative versions of album tracks and even tunes he discarded completely over the years that have never been released. Once the initial shock of his sudden death subsided, his wife Dana, daughter Adria, producer Ryan Ulyate and bandmates Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench began poring through the material to create the upcoming four-cd box set An American Treasure,...
