The Guinness World Records once listed the BBC’s Doctor Who as the “most successful Science Fiction television series in the world,” and, in November 2023, the show turned an impressive 60 years old. Doctor Who originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and was relaunched in 2005.
Despite its grand age, it’s not demonstrating any signs of slowing down.
Former showrunner Russell T Davies (fresh from his success with It’s A Sin) returns to the franchise following last year’s Christmas specials with fan-favorites David Tennant and Catherine Tate. With the 14th season — which, for the first time ever, will premiere simultaneously worldwide thanks to Disney+ (on Friday at 7 p.m.) — Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education and Barbie) officially becomes the newest incarnation of the errant Time Lord.
But, what about those who have already played the role of The Doctor (a.k.a. Doctor Who) over the past seven decades? Below is your 101 to all of the lead actors.

The bestselling book “The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince” is getting the big-screen treatment. Crazy Legs Features has inked a deal to turn the New York Times bestseller from the late musician’s first wife – Mayte Garcia – into a feature biopic.
The book, released in early 2017, offers a look at the influential rock star through his and Garcia’s relationship. She met Prince in 1990 at the age of 16 when he was 32. Following a four-year courtship, during which time Prince became the then-17-year-old’s legal guardian, they married in 1996. Tragically, their son, born Oct. 16, 1996, died six days later from Pfeiffer syndrome type 2. She later told People Magazine that it [understandably] doomed their marriage, which ended in 2000.
The memoir is titled after the song “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” which Prince wrote about her in 1994. The book chronicles how their relationship began backstage at a concert and developed into...

After a long delay brought about by the writers’ strike, former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Pete Davidson will finally get to host the late night sketch program on October 14, with musical guest Ice Spice. The episode serves as the Season 49 premiere and it will air live coast to coast at 11:30 p.m. Et / 8:30 p.m. Pt. In a new NBC promo video (watch above), “SNL” star Kenan Thompson jokes about how the three of them are all “Gen Z icons,” to which Ice Spice brings up that he’s in his 40s.
“No, no,” Thompson fires back. “A long time ago, I met this guy and made a deal where I get to stay 25 years old for forever.” He explains that the man was a “tall fellow” with “horns, red fur and little hooves.”
Davidson quickly interjects, “Kenan, that’s the devil, dude.”
“What?! Nah,” Thompson says.

Entourage creator Doug Ellin went full Ari Gold on a writer who posted an essay declaring that the HBO comedy series will be re-edited to reflect modern sensibilities (à la Roald Dahl and Agatha Christie’s books).
There’s just one thing: The essay was satire, which Ellin apparently didn’t recognize.
The piece was written by Max Davison at McSweeney’s (which should have been the first clue) who pretended to be an HBO executive announcing Entourage will be the network’s first series to undergo “sensitivity readings,” noting, “[Since 2011], we have since undergone vast shifts in our views on women, race, and Ed Hardy …. We are merely removing a handful of problematic elements that were more socially acceptable back in Entourage’s time. These include sexism, homophobia, misogyny, anti-Semitism, dubious sexual politics, Asian hate, toxic masculinity, the casting couch, racial slurs, ethnic slurs, sexist jokes, abusive workplace language, mockery of sex workers,...

Clubhouse, the live audio app that once drew big buzz and interest in a multi-billion-dollar takeover, is “resetting” and letting go of 50% of its staff of a few dozen workers.
Founders Rohan Seth and Paul Davison sent a memo to employees to break the news Thursday. “We’re deeply sorry to be doing this, and we would not be making this change if we didn’t feel it was absolutely necessary,” they wrote.
Laying out their reasoning for what they called a “resetting” of the company, the pair cited the reopening of society after the shutdowns of the pandemic. “As the world has opened up post-Covid, it’s become harder for many people to find their friends on Clubhouse and to fit long conversations into their daily lives,” the memo added. “To find its role in the world, the product needs to evolve. This requires a period of change.”

Those impacted will receive severance and continued healthcare coverage for the next few months.

Clubhouse, the once-buzzy live audio app that has seen usage decline compared to its pandemic heyday, is laying off more than half of its staffers as the company’s co-founders seek to pare the organization back to a “smaller, product-focused team.”
In a letter shared publicly and with employees Thursday, Clubhouse co-founders Paul Davison and Rohan Seth said the company would be “scaling back” by more than 50 percent. A spokesperson for Clubhouse declined to share the exact number of employees impacted by the layoffs, though the company had around 100 employees as of last October.
“We need to reset the company, eliminate roles and take it down to a smaller, product-focused team. We arrived at this conclusion reluctantly, as we have years of runway remaining and do not feel immediate pressure to reduce costs. Warning: Contains spoilers for the latest episode of “Doctor Who”
“Can somebody tell me what the hell is going on?” says incoming “Doctor Who” star Ncuti Gatwa in a trailer for next year’s series premiere. After seeing “The Power of the Doctor,” it would be hard to find any “Who” fan who doesn’t feel the same way.
Airing on the BBC on Sunday, “The Power of the Doctor” was advertised as a sendoff for the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whitaker, after four years in the role. But with the special also airing as part of the BBC’s 100th anniversary celebrations, it also was overloaded with cameos from past Doctors and companions.
As advertised, we got Sophie Aldred and Janet Fielding returning as 80s “Who” companions Ace and Tegan, but we also got cameos from four previous Doctors. Doctors No. Five through Eight — Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy...

Living legend and Italian icon Joe Pesci has retired and un-retired numerous times, with his most recent venture back in the limelight positioning him as the grandfather of Pete Davidson in the new Lorne Michaels produced series, "Bupkis." The Academy Award-winning actor also joins Emmy Award-winner Edie Falco, who has been cast as Davidson's mom. I can already hear the sound of a family screaming across the house as a form of conversation rather than walking to the next room and speaking at a normal volume. Reminds me of home. "Bupkis" is a half-hour comedy series loosely based on Pete Davidson's life, with the comedian playing a heightened and fictionalized version of himself.
Davison is writing, starring, and executive producing the series, with Michaels executive producing for Broadway Video. Judah Miller serves as the showrunner and will be writing with Dave Sirus, who is also executive producing alongside Andrew Singer and Erin David.

This year marks 25 years since the release of Paul Verhoeven’s movie adaptation of the Robert A. Heinlein novel, Starship Troopers. It’s a great movie, although not one that hues tightly to its source material. You could even be forgiven for thinking the director had never read the book or that this was a completely unrelated film which has had the Starship Troopers title slapped on it to sell more tickets.
Because, as it turns out, both of those things are true. Verhoeven is on record as saying he tried to read Starship Troopers but stopped after two chapters “because it was so boring;” meanwhile the movie began as a script called “Bug Hunt at Outpost 7.” Scriptwriter Ed Neumeier even described the original idea for the film as being “a big, silly, jingoistic, xenophobic, let’s-go-out-and-kill-the-enemy movie, and I had settled on the idea that it should be against insects…...

“Some called him the godfather of underground film.” “My guest tonight is Jonas Mekas, who was first of all a poet before he was a filmmaker.” “His name is Jonas Mekas, a man who I think more than almost anybody in the world epitomizes the meaning and significance of independent filmmaking.”
Those are some of the TV news voiceover soundbites that open Kd Davison’s documentary about the great ringleader of American avant-garde cinema. It’s not an auspicious beginning. How can a doc about someone who championed pushing the boundaries of filmmaking to their limit get such a prosaic and obvious introduction for a film about his life? Certainly his 96 years were more than a sum of media reports from broadcasters who barely grasped his work. Sticking to the thriller genre that’s been his stomping ground on both the big and small screen, Stephan Rick’s second English-language film “The Good Neighbor” is a remake of his 2011 German-language debut feature of the same title. The setting has changed, but the story remains largely untouched. Now Luke Kleintank and Jonathan Rhys Meyers play new acquaintances whose shared complicity in an accidental death creates increasingly unsavory conflict.
Competent performances and a slick veneer make this revamp go down easily enough. Still, one wishes Rick had placed more emphasis on Hitchcockian suspense, rather than trusting the slow-moving tale will hold us via plot and character complexities that really aren’t particularly evident.
American journalist David (Kleintank of the series “FBI: International” and “Man in the High Castle”) has accepted a job with the “European Press Network” in Riga in the wake of a bad relationship breakup. While he gets settled,...

Mondays tend to suck. Let’s see what I can do to make yours a bit better with a flurry of scoops, teases and sound bites from some of TV’s hottest shows and stars.
A Kiss Is Just a Kiss…? | Apparently there is no such thing as a run-of-the-mill episode of CBS’ The Good Wife, because this Tuesday’s hour raised my eyebrow at least twice. For the case of the week, you have Ken Leung delivering a nicely understated performance that’s a far cry from Lost’s Miles, plus there’s a nifty callback to a previous episode.
