Disney revealed on Monday that its musical animated feature Wish, starring Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) and Chris Pine (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) garnered 13.2 million views globally in its first five days streaming on Disney+.
This amounts to the third biggest premiere on the service, behind those of Encanto and Frozen 2, with a view being defined as total stream time divided by runtime.
Earlier this year securing a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature, Wish takes place in the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha (DeBose), a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force — a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe — the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico (Chris Pine) — to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars,...

Ninety-four songs and 149 scores have been deemed eligible in the music categories for the 96th annual Academy Awards, Variety has learned.
Voting began Thursday, with 390 members of the Academy music branch eligible to vote in this year’s competition. And for the first time in years, there appear to be no surprises or glaring omissions.
Any film can submit up to three songs, and the “Barbie” entries were as expected: Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made for,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and the Mark Ronson-Andrew Wyatt song “I’m Just Ken.”
Five other films submitted the maximum of three songs, including two from Disney: the live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with “For the First Time,” “The Scuttlebutt” and “Wild Uncharted Waters,” all by Alan Menken (who won Oscars for the original in 1989) and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and “Wish,” the Julia Michaels-Benjamin Rice tunes including “I’m a Star,...

Disney Animation Studios’ chief creative officer Jennifer Lee had not yet written the script for “Wish” when Grammy nominated songwriter Julia Michaels wrote the demo for “This Wish” in 2020. But that demo, Lee says, “defined the whole movie; it became our North Star.”
Celebrating 100 years of storytelling at Disney, “Wish” pays homage to the celestial entity so many have wished upon. Ariana DeBose voices Asha, its main protagonist and heroine, a 17-year-old who lives in the magical kingdom of Rosas, ruled by Disney’s newest villain, King Magnifico, voiced by Chris Pine. Rosas is built on people’s wishes and hopes. When Asha makes a wish one night, she accidentally summons Star, an energetic character from the sky. An adventurous journey capturing hope, joy and the power of dreams follows.

A broad range of titles, animation styles and plenty of music define this season’s animated feature race, with some expected contenders still to debut.
For instance, as the studio celebrates its centennial, Walt Disney Animation Studios hopes to grab one of the five nomination slots with its Nov. 22 musical Wish, which tells the story of how Disney’s wishing star came to be. Its voice cast is led by Ariana DeBose as young protagonist Asha and Chris Pine as villainous King Magnifico. The cast performs a collection of original songs from Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, including “This Wish,” “I’m a Star” and “This Is the Thanks I Get.” Oscar winner Chris Buck (Frozen) and Fawn Veerasunthorn direct, and Disney Animation chief creative officer and Oscar winner Jennifer Lee is a writer and executive producer.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.

Disney‘s latest animated feature, “Wish” explores a kingdom where a self-centered ruler (Chris Pine) keeps wishes and dreams captive so that they cannot be fully realized. It’s a theme that spoke to the film’s composer, Dave Metzger, who himself fulfilled a lifelong dream when he came on board to score “Wish” — his first major theatrical feature after decades of work as an orchestrator and arranger. “My dream since I was 16 years old was to be the composer on a major film,” Metzger told IndieWire. “At this point, I thought it wasn’t going to happen. I really thought that the ship had sailed and I was never going to have that opportunity.”
When the film’s music producer, Matt Walker, called Metzger to tell him he was being considered for the job, Metzger was delighted but taken aback. “I was just shocked,” he said. “Though I’ve...

A remix of themes, tropes and references to other – and better – Disney classics, Wish is a hollow pandering to die-hard fans for the studio’s 100th birthday. It’s so derivative and bland that one wouldn’t be surprised if Disney announced it was the first movie written and directed by artificial intelligence.

Unfulfilled potential is a powerful theme for a story. Making Disney’s choice to explore what might happen if an entire kingdom of subjects surrendered their chance to fulfil their destinies by entrusting their deepest wish – and every memory of it – to their king an intriguing premise. Is it better to live with the hope that one day your wish may come true or to hold that dream close to your heart and let it guide your life’s path?
We’ll never know. Because, sadly, the House of Mouse’s hundredth-anniversary offering fails to interrogate its own themes, choosing to bimble about looking pretty (it is Very pretty), ticking off generic highs and lows in the place of real plot points and making knowing nods to animated features past instead. Leaving us to gloomily ponder what might have been.
Asha (Ariana DeBose) is a tour guide in her beloved Mediterranean home Rosas.

Occasionally, a flick comes at the right time. And for me, as we head into the holiday season, Wish was one of them (read our review). It may not be technically the best of the current Disney releases, but something about its story and music spoke to this viewer. The film features terrific performances from its stars, including Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, and Victor Garber. Directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, from a script by Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore, Wish comes from the inspiration of 100 years of Disney animation. From classic cameos to the lovely tunes from Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, Wish was a delight.
Last week, we had the thrill of attending an in-person junket for the film. With the strike ending, Hollywood was again ready to get their voice out there. And after attending a preview event for Wish, it was nice to...

Plot: When a young woman discovers that the wishes of her community are being destroyed by an egomaniac ruler, she must try and create a little magic herself to bring joy to everyone.
Review: “When You Wish Upon A Star” is a song that has become a staple for even the slightest inclusion of Disney in their lives. It’s impossible not to be able to recognize the iconic tune featured in the animated classic Pinocchio. Initially performed by Cliff Edwards, the music has become a signature for everything Disney. And with the current 100-year celebration, Walt Disney Animation is bringing audiences their latest big-screen musical adventure, the appropriately titled Wish. The Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn-directed feature is a joyful, sweet, and engaging tale; although wishes may not come true for all audiences, it sure did for the audience I saw it with.
Wish tells the story of the magical town of Ramas.

Disney original animation is looking at a comeback this Thanksgiving. The princess pic Wish is looking at as much as $45M-$50M over five days after the studio suffering a setback over last year’s holiday with Strange World, which did $18.8M.
With the strikes over and Thanksgiving week a primetime for moviegoing with K-12 schools off all week and colleges off Thursday and Friday, there’s a lot of hope from Hollywood for a bountiful box office. All movies combined to gross $134M during the Wednesday-Sunday period in 2022. Remember, Black Friday is one of the richest days of the year at the domestic box office.
The overseas release for Wish is a staggered approach a la Disney/Pixar’s Elemental, with only 43% of the foreign marketplace going this week including major markets UK, Spain, Mexico, China, as well as India, Benelux, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Philippines. All in, $25M is expected from abroad,...

In the Renaissance era of the 1990s, Walt Disney Animation Studios had seemingly cracked the code in terms of telling old-fashioned stories with a modern twist. There were still plenty of fables and fairy tales to adapt, from the story of a mermaid who wanted to be a human to a star-crossed romance between a brainy young woman and a monstrous beast. And the studio was able to harness present-day Broadway-style songs into these stories, lending them a grandeur and epic quality that made them annual theatrical events. To the eagle-eyed viewer, there were also funny little Easter eggs referencing past Disney films, if you knew where to look. In "Aladdin," for example, there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in which the portly Sultan is seen playing with a series of figurines, including one that is unmistakably the Beast from "Beauty and the Beast." To recognize this gag was a miniature reward...

There’s a character in Disney’s self-mythologizing movie Wish whose life dream is to inspire the next generation. He lives in Rosas, the fictional kingdom ruled by the self-taught sorcerer Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine). For reasons that remain murky, the wizard hoards his constituents’ wishes in his castle tower. When residents of Rosas turn 18, they relinquish their greatest dream in hopes that one day their benevolent dictator will fulfill it. Magnifico, like all authoritarian leaders, insists that it’s a small price to pay for their safety and eternal peace of mind.
The whole premise is very Disney, and Wish plays out as one would expect. Magnifico meets his match in Asha (Ariana DeBose), a 17-year-old girl who dares to question the order of things. Their encounter represents the generational crossroads that Disney finds itself at during its centennial. In him, a symbol of authority and empire. In her,...

Chris Pine isn’t a singer but he tries his best to handle a Disney tune with “This Is The Thanks I Get?!” from Wish. The studio released a minute-long clip of Pine’s animated character, King Magnifico, performing the song. As an added bonus, Disney also released a behind-the-scenes video of Pine singing alongside clips of King Magnifico.
Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Julia Michaels and Grammy-winning producer/songwriter/musician Benjamin Rice wrote “This Is The Thanks I Get?!” as well as six additional original songs for the family-friendly animated film.
“We just had a blast with it,” said Wish director Chris Buck, commenting on Pine’s new villain song. “The visuals are terrific — he’s the King and he feels like nobody respects him. It’s been a while since we’ve had a good villain song, so Julia and Ben just went for it.”

Long-time Disney music arranger and orchestrator Dave Metzger is finally getting his “Wish.” After two decades and orchestrating “Tarzan,” “Wreck-It Ralph” and “Frozen,” Metzger is composing his first full animated feature, “Wish.”
Speaking to Variety during scoring session breaks in early September, Metzger says getting the call was amazing. “I’ve always done a lot of composing, but it’s always been as the unknown composer or the additional music person,” he says. But after 25 years of being that additional music person, Metzger wondered if the window on getting his composing credit would ever become a reality. “I had reached the point where I wasn’t sure,” he admits.
A phone call from Matthew Walker, VP of Music at Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios changed that. Metzger says, “He said he was considering me to be the composer for ‘Wish.’”

The Oscar category of Best Original Song seems to have a concrete group of four tunes anticipated to be selected as nominees for Tuesday’s announcement. They include Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award winner “Naatu Naatu” from “Rrr” (M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose), plus “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, and “Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio”. That leaves at least one spot potentially open for a surprise nominee. When predicting the song category, it is best to keep in mind that the music branch clearly has their favorites, and that usually tends to fill up a couple uncertain slots. This year, two of those songwriters may have a better shot at another Oscar nomination than most people think: perennial nominees Diane Warren for “Applause” from “Tell It Like A Woman,” and J. Ralph for “Dust & Ash” from the documentary...

The Golden Globes attempted to make a big comeback this year, following 2022's embarrassing lack of a televised ceremony in the wake of revelations about backing organisation the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's legacy of racially troubling decisions, corruption and other issues. Though Ricky Gervais was not around to stick a knife in, host Jerrod Carmichael aimed for truth-telling and satire from the start, though it was tough to avoid a feeling that this was an awards show with a cloud hanging over it.
Presenters awkwardly had to hand out different categories and, while the alcohol was clearly flowing, the whole affair had a typically undisciplined feel.
Film-wise, there were some expected wins.
On the TV front, Ryan Murphy was handed lifetime achievement award and gave perhaps the night's best speech, acknowledging and celebrating a wealth of those who appeared in his shows or helped make them. The White Lotus scored...

The nominees for Best Original Song at the 2023 Golden Globes offer a variety of different music genres, not least of which is the pop hit “Naatu Naatu” from the Indian epic action movie “Rrr.” The song and dance number composed by nominees M.M. Keeravani and written by Chandrabose, as well as sung by Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj, has become a viral hit and an instant standout among the movie’s musical soundtrack. It’s Lady Gaga’s turn to take our breath away.
The Oscar winner for Best Original Song for “A Star Is Born” and the recent winner of the august New York Film Critics Circle’s best actress award for “House of Gucci”, whose recent triumphs include dueting with Tony Bennett at Radio City Music Hall for his final concert and appearing at the 2022 Oscars with Liza Minnelli, has found a new collaborative partner: The United States Air Force.
As with the 1986 Tony Scott version, Joseph Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” is aiming to take over the box office and the airwaves. Back in the day, the “Top Gun Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” hit number one on the album charts, powered by Kenny Loggins’s “Danger Zone” and that year’s Oscar-winner for Best Original Song, Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away.” Both tunes were co-written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock.
