"Cheers" was the third highest-rated show on television when Shelley Long opted to quit the series at the end of its fifth season and pursue movie stardom. Though the show had long since settled into its ensemble groove, the on-again/off-again Sam Malone and Diane Chambers romance was the primary generator of water-cooler chatter. Moreover, the chemistry between Long and Ted Danson was the stuff of a series showrunner's dream. Their banter was worthy of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. You don't just go out and find another Katharine Hepburn. Could "Cheers," brilliant and popular as it was, survive Long's departure, especially when fans had so much invested in Diane?
This was the conundrum faced by casting director Jeff Greenberg, who'd joined "Cheers" during Long's last season. He knew chasing the next Long was courting disaster, so he looked for an actor who could hold her own with Danson and...

As far as investigators go, Jim Rockford (James Garner) is a bit of a departure from the mostly-polished (Columbo excepted) detectives of television's first decade. A slouchily dressed detective who lived in a trailer and served time in San Quentin, Rockford was cool — if not always collected. "The Rockford Files" ran for six seasons on NBC beginning in 1974 and was later resurrected for a series of '90s TV movies. In that time, audiences were introduced not only to Rockford, but to a cast of supporting characters including his truck driver dad Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.), LAPD pal Becker (Joe Santos), and the con artist Angel (Stuart Margolin).
Garner passed away in 2014, and only a few "Rockford Files" castmates are still with us today. Those who are still around include notable recurring guest stars like famously mustachioed "Blue Bloods" star Tom Selleck, Egot-winning multi-hyphenate Rita Moreno, and "Happy Gilmore" director...

At the Oscars in 2019, one production company was at the center of the year’s most talked about films and on the cusp of the industry’s sweeping trends. The man who backed it, however, wasn’t at the ceremony.
That year the films made by Participant Media collected 17 Oscar nominations, for Green Book, which eventually won best picture and went on to gross $321.8 million worldwide; Roma, which broke Netflix into the best picture race for the first time; and Rbg, the documentary about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg that managed to become one of the highest-grossing independent films of 2018.
In an indicator of Participant and its backer, tech billionaire Jeff Skoll’s unique, dual missions, the Oscar gatherings Participant threw that year included a viewing party for the National Domestic Workers Alliance at The Jane Club, a nod to the lead character in Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, and...

Man of Steel was the movie that propelled Henry Cavill to global popularity, but even though he nailed the role of Superman/Clark Kent, he could not have done some of the emotional scenes without the help of his costars. The actor credits veteran stars Diane Lane and Kevin Costner for helping him out.
Henry Cavill in Man of Steel
The pair portrayed Jonathan and Martha Kent, the adoptive parents of Superman. As someone who has been in the industry longer than Cavill, they understand the difficulty of delivering tricky scenes, so they were both ready to assist the younger star.

General Hospital predictions suspect Jason Morgan may buy back the Metro Court Hotel for Carly Corinthos Spencer on the ABC daytime drama.
Carly Loses the Metro Court on General Hospital
Gh fans will recall that Carly Corinthos Spencer (Laura Wright) co-owned The Mc Hotel with her best friend, Olivia Falconeri (Lisa LoCicero), for years. Then, things went horribly wrong when she tried to help her son, Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell).
Michael was trying to merge Elq with Drew Cain’s (Cameron Mathison) company, Aurora Media. Carly thought she could help. She bought a ton of stock and leveraged her share of the Mc thinking the merger would happen.
When it fell through, Carly lost everything on General Hospital. To make matters worse, Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) turned Carly and Drew into the authorities for insider trading.
Drew did prison time so Carly didn’t have to but she still had to pay five million dollars.

You know a TV death is sad when years later, you can still get a lump in your throat just thinking about it.
These deaths are like that.
In some cases, it's how the character went out that caused all the pain. The injustice of seeing such a great character meet a terrible end, a heroic character going out beautifully.
In other cases, it is the reaction of everyone around the character that gets the wracking sobs going.
These are the deaths that ripped our hearts out. Which ones got to you?

To mix sports metaphors, H.E.R.’s new song “The Journey,” which will soundtrack ESPN’s broadcasts of the NBA Finals, is a big swing — an old-school, hyper-melodic, live-instrument-driven ballad. And for H.E.R., who sees a gap between the energy of her live shows and her recorded output to date, it’s the kind of song she’s had in her all along. She tells Rolling Stone about recording “The Journey,” explains how it reflects a rough year for her (which includes an ongoing legal battle with the record...

So this Summer movie season is fully upon us as we get yet another example of a staple of the warmer months, mainly the other “s” word, the sequel. Sure we expect it with the big “franchise” flicks like last weekend’s MCU blockbuster. However, this one expands on a rather modest “niche” comedy that found a very receptive audience five years ago. They are probably eager to revisit their old friends, but the story needs a “hook” to increase that fan base. For this, the producers harkened back to sequel ideas of the past in which the familiar face would be in new locations (think Gidget Goes Hawaiian or Tarzan Goes To India). Hey, it works for the more recent series of The Trip flicks. And like that comic duo, this quartet is packing their bags in Book Club: The Next Chapter.

“Book Club: The Next Chapter” is one of those rare sequels that feels like an earned inevitability rather than a desperate bid. That’s because its quartet of genuinely iconic stars — Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen, and Candice Bergen — all wanted to make another movie with director Bill Holderman, and the 2018 original film’s $104 million global gross certainly sweetened the deal.
So did a two-month-plus, all-expenses-paid trip to Italy.

But they’re doing so on a glitzy trip to Florence, Rome, and beyond, and with their book club selection, Paul Coehlo’s “The Alchemist,” as their guide.

Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda et al go on a bookish holiday after keeping their reading club going through lockdown, but jokes are thin on the ground
Bill Holderman’s 2018 silver-years comedy Book Club had the amusing idea of showing us four prosperous female friends – Vivian (Jane Fonda), Diane (Diane Keaton), Sharon (Candice Bergen) and Carol (Mary Steenburgen), given to drinking balloon glasses of wine and laughing life-affirmingly in picture-perfect kitchens – who are radicalised by reading Fifty Shades of Grey and inspired to overhaul their personal relationships. Now for the sequel: it is a few years later, the heroines have gone through the Covid lockdown and kept their book club going on Zoom, flirting with Sally Rooney’s Normal People, but heart-sinkingly sticking with lite fare such as Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist.
Yet books are irrelevant to their new adventure: a bachelorette holiday together in Italy before Vivian marries her...

It’s beyond obvious that women deserve a movie that portrays and celebrates them in their sixties and seventies reveling in the joys of romantic adventure and uninhibited sex. It’s not so obvious that they deserved “Book Club,” the 2018 comedy about four hale, hearty, and prosperous senior friends who read “Fifty Shades of Grey” in their monthly literary white-wine klatsch, only to discover that E.L. James’s S&m princess fantasy jump-starts their hibernating libidos and/or their desire to commit to the men who are courting them. You could use a whole Thesaurus paragraph of withering descriptives to evoke the sort of movie “Book Club” was. It was prefab, it was cookie-cutter, it was paint-by-numbers, it was broad enough to play to the peanut gallery, it was four glorified sitcoms jammed into one overly synthetic package.
And yet…the movie, in its story-parts-falling-into-place-far-too-neatly “Look how bawdy we’re being!

‘Book Club: The Next Chapter’ Review: You’re Going to Need a Lot of Wine to Enjoy This Sloppy Sequel
In 2018, when Bill Holderman’s directorial debut “Book Club” first hit the big screen, this writer wondered — not entirely facetiously — how high the amiable comedy’s white wine budget must have been. After all, most of the action of the star-studded feature unfolded in cozy living rooms and swanky hotels (read: sets on top of sets), with many of these locales being positively sloshed on, over, and under with light libations.
For its sequel, Holderman and his crackling cast — including returning stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen — have allegedly leveled up, taking their booze-swilling and truth-talking foursome on the road for a whirlwind trip to Italy. The Prosecco budget? High! The rest of it? Well, despite claims that the production decamped to Italy for over two months, even the glitziest parts of “Book Club: The Next Chapter” look as if they were filmed on location at glamorous Caesar’s Palace.

If the opening sequence of Bill Holderman’s “Book Club: The Next Chapter” is any indication we might have officially turned the page on psychological “lockdown despair” narratives and entered the (somewhat cringey) era of lighthearted “lockdown nostalgia.”
That’s what the leading ladies of 2018’s lovely, if not a tad underwhelming, friendship comedy “Book Club” signal in the sequel’s opening moments, reuniting for a similarly boozy and moderately engaging adventure soaked in deep Italian reds, but not enough laughs.
It’s probably easy to feel a little nostalgic for the days of lockdown. Halcyon days for those who were financially privileged, healthy and could afford to take up new interests during that low-key downtime, like pickling, playing the accordion or caring for a new pet parrot. The fabulous (and evidently wealthy) quartet consisting of Jane Fonda’s perennially independent Vivian, Mary Steenburgen’s fretting Carol, Diane Keaton’s...

Focus Features has the right idea in releasing the new sequel, Book Club: The Next Chapter just in time for Mother’s Day. Reuniting four genuine movie icons – Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen – whose first film in this senior franchise, 2017’s Book Club, was a surprise hit making over $100 million worldwide, there was proof positive that older female audience was eager for a night or matinee out at the multiplex if the idea and cast were right. Since then the pandemic hit and changed moviegoing habits for the older crowd, a group that is hard to get back into theatres (although not impossible – witness The Lost City and Ticket To Paradise). My guess is that with this quartet back in fine form, and now all over 70 (!), this could again play with the usual Hollywood conceit that women of a certain age are not boxoffice. Throw in Italy...

Signed, sealed and delivered, Book Club: The Next Chapter is an unabashed love letter to four great movie stars. As a vehicle for their talents, it’s less of a sure thing. If you can see past the clunky plot contrivances, strained hijinks and one-liners that don’t land, and focus on the Italy-set comedy’s Mediterranean glow and the dazzling quartet of go-getters at its center, the movie might fit the bill as a celebratory pairing with Mother’s Day brunch.
The tagline on the key art encapsulates the sequel’s problems: “Slightly Scandalous. Totally Fabulous.” That qualifying “slightly” signals the softer cadence of this reunion. In the 2018 hit, Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen transcended the often tepid humor with their rat-a-tat delivery; here, returning director Bill Holderman, again working from a screenplay he wrote with Erin Simms, struggles to find a rhythm, and flat...

Since Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist came out in 1988, it’s obtained an almost apocryphal status that it’s bound to never outgrow. The book, which concerns an Andalusian shepherd on a journey to find out what his destiny is, has been acclaimed less as a gift of great literature than as a fount of self-help. Given that it’s an affirming and, especially, digestible tale of discovery and hope, it makes for an apt early reference point for Bill Holderman’s Book Club: The Next Chapter: Though its main characters don’t carry on an official reading series in this sequel, each points to Coelho’s book as something of a north star in their lives.
The film is cinema as affirmation, asking us to think of it as a ticket to a far-flung locale, where love might be birthed alongside conversations with good friends about innocuous barriers that we pretend are insurmountable.

The excitement and buzz continues to build for “The Little Mermaid.”
A source tells me that director Rob Marshall and husband, producer John DeLuca, hosted a private screening of Disney’s live adaptation of the 1989 animated classic on Sunday night at New York’s Whitby Hotel.
The guest list of about 80 people included Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, Matt Damon and his family, Emily Mortimer, Ben Platt and his “Parade” co-star Micaela Diamond, Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Bob Balaban and Lynn Grossman, Diane and Brian Sutherland, and Scott Ellis. The film’s composer Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who co-wrote three new songs for the movie, were also there.
I’m told the star-studded audience applauded after each musical number and continued to rave during a post-screening reception. Marshall joked that the evening’s torrential downpour was fitting because it felt like they were truly “under the sea.”

Phyllis Summers has been at the center of some very dramatic storylines on The Young and the Restless since her initial introduction in 1994. These plots have included everything from secret affairs to tragic divorces, and even the occasional murder. Recent episodes of the CBS soap opera have featured Phyllis in what is arguably her most dramatic storyline to date. The redhead was presumed dead. But is her time in Genoa City really over? We don’t think so!

“Survivor” players know that only one person can win the game, but it always stings to be the first one eliminated. The pain of being booted first from your season has to be a difficult one to get over, especially for those who really wanted to play the game. First boots are often targeted because of age or challenge performance or etiquette around camp, and it’s sad to see people’s torch be snuffed after only three days on the island. Some early vote-offs make such an impression, however, that they are remembered even today. Above you can scroll through our gallery (or click here for direct access) of 20 memorable “Survivor” first boots, listed in order of appearance. We hope they get another chance to play again one day.

The Young and the Restless has been a staple on daytime television for 50 years, and its characters have become household names. Phyllis Summers, played by Michelle Stafford, has been a key player in the show since her introduction in 1994.
Phyllis often finds herself in the middle of some of the most dramatic storylines. Recently, the character’s supposed death has left fans on the edge of their seats, wondering what will happen next. But who helped the redhead to fake her death? Could it be Summer?

Diane Jenkins had not been seen in Genoa City since 2011, and everyone assumed she had passed away. But then, in March 2022, the character returned to Y&r and shockingly admitted to Jack Abbott that she and Deacon Sharpe had faked her death.

Sandeford wasn't kidding when he said secrets never survive murder.
But did anyone expect the person with the secrets to be the Bureau Chief pulling out all the stops to help the cops investigate his Ada's murder?
East New York Season 1 Episode 19 told a story that would have fit in on Law & Order: Svu but put its own unique spin on it.
Wexler's involvement in the murder was a twist I didn't see coming! He seemed upset by Diane's death and offered to help the cops get the resources they needed to close the case without giving off any weird vibes.
But when the cops found out he had been spying on Diane, everything changed. Wexler didn't want to give them the recordings he'd gotten from the listening device, raising their hackles -- and mine.
