Born in Oregon in 1914, George Bruns was the son of a sawmill worker. He took music lessons as a child, becoming proficient on the piano, tuba and trombone. He attended Oregon State Agricultural College, and in order to pay tuition he played in the ROTC band. Deciding on a musical career, he left college to be a full-time musician, and was soon playing with the likes of Jack Teagarden.
After World War II, he began playing with various swing and jazz bands, then formed his own group (among whom was a trumpet player named Doc Severinsen). In addition to having his own band, he was also musical director at several Portland (OR) radio stations. In 1948 he left Portland for Los Angeles, where he played for orchestras such as the Turk Murphy Band. In 1953 he was hired by UPA Studios as the composer for a cartoon called Little Boy with a Big Horn (1953). The award-winning short launched his career, and over the next few years he composed music for a dozen more pictures.
He was hired by Walt Disney Studios in 1953 to compose the score for Sleeping Beauty (1959). While working on that, he was asked to come up with a song to fill a 3.5-minute gap in a multi-part TV series the studio was shooting. He got together with lyricist Thomas W. Blackburn, and they came up with what would become a landmark song and series of the 1950s: "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" from Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier (1955).
Bruns was then assigned by Disney to write songs for its upcoming childrens show, The Mickey Mouse Club (1955). He spent nearly 20 years at the studio, working on the scores of nearly 40 films and several TV series and specials. He received an Academy Award nomination for his scores for "Sleeping Beauty", Babes in Toyland (1961) and The Sword in the Stone (1963), and another nomination for the song "Love" from Robin Hood (1973).
He retired in 1976, moved back to Oregon, and died of a heart attack in Portland on May 23, 1983.- Actor

Jessie Keith Whitley was born July 1, 1955, in Sandy Hook, Kentucky. Learning to play guitar at age 6, he appeared on Buddy Starcher's regional TV show at age 8 and formed a bluegrass band with his friend Ricky Skaggs a few years later. When they were 15, Skaggs and Whitley were asked to play a local show when Ralph Stanley's entourage was running late. When Stanley heard them, he hired them for his band. They stayed for two summers until Whitley went to work for Carl Jackson in 1972. By 1974, he was back with Stanley, this time singing lead vocals. By then, Whitley had already survived a car crash (at 120 mph) and driving a car off a cliff into a river.
In 1978 he joined J.D. Crowe and the New South but finally chased a career in country music, which had always been closer to his heart. RCA issued a single, "Turn Me to Love" in 1984 with Patty Loveless singing harmony. At that time, Whitley's excessive drinking made him unreliable, but it did give him a hardened, honky-tonk voice, and he then only needed the right song.
In 1986 he married rising star Lorrie Morgan and cracked the Top 20 for the first time with "Miami, My Amy." After three Top 10 singles ("Ten Feet Away," "Homecoming '63" and "Hard Livin'"), Whitley finally reached No. 1 in 1988 with "Don't Close Your Eyes." He continued his streak with "When You Say Nothing at All" and "I'm No Stranger to the Rain." But in the midst of his newfound success, he died from alcohol poisoning at his home on May 8, 1989.
Nevertheless, Whitley's music remained in the spotlight for several years beyond that. His next two singles reached No. 1, and a duet with Morgan peaked at No. 13 in 1990. "Brotherly Love," a duet with Earl Thomas Conley, reached No. 2 in 1991. Morgan organized Keith Whitley - A Tribute Album in 1994 which included several previously unreleased Whitley tracks. Released as an unlikely single, Alison Krauss & Union Station's version of "When You Say Nothing at All" surprisingly reached No. 3 on the country charts, introducing Krauss--and Whitley--to listeners who had only discovered country music in the early 1990s. The song has since become a wedding standard.- Actress

Kennetch studied at the Native Theatre School in Toronto and the Royal Conservatory's Drama Program at the University of Toronto. He has worked as an actor and director with many renowned theatre companies throughout North America and abroad. His film and television credits such as Big Bear (1998), Dear America: A Journey to the New World (1999), The Scarlet Letter (1995), Pocahontas: The Legend (1995). His involvement in Native theatre has given him a greater understanding of the responsibility Native artists have in sharing the many stories and experiences of our people through dramatization. Kennetch had the opportunity of working with many gifted Native playwrights, directors and actors including the admiration of Tomson Highway, Graham Greene, Gary Farmer, Floyd Favel, Tantoo Cardinal, 'Gordon Tootoosis', and Gil Cardinal. One play in particular that reinforced the importance of cultural identity was "Black Elk Speaks", a play that told the story of Black Elk, a Sioux Spiritual Leader and his vision for the indigenous people of North America. Kennetch believes that theater can be used as a tool for healing and is a vehicle to educate others. Although he received his formal training in Toronto, Kenneth has now brought his experiences as an actor and director home to Saskatchewan to assist in the establishment of a Native theatre company in Saskatchewan. "I believe the spirit and identity of Native people lies in the beliefs, traditions, and ceremonies of our ancestors. This knowledge and wisdom of our Elders must be passed on to our youth, and we can use theatre as a tool." He will continue with his efforts as the Artistic Director of the SNTC to expose native theatre to native and non-native people within Saskatchewan.- Luke Dacey was born on 13 February 1982 in Sandy, Bedfordshire, England, UK.
