- Henry Lytton, the English singer and actor, was to Gilbert & Sullivan what John Gielgud was to Shakespeare, only more so. The baritone joined the famous D'Oyly Carte Opera Company that staged Gilbert & Sullivan operettas in 1884 and remained with them until 1903. With return engagements with the company between 1906 and 1934, he was associated with them for 50 years. He was knighted in 1930, becoming the only theatrical performer to receive the accolade for services to the theater as a Gilbert and Sullivan performer.
