- Margaret Schilling was the daughter of Henry Schilling, who emigrated from Germany to the USA in 1892. Her mother, Mary Anne Hall emigrated from Ireland in 1896. Margaret, the oldest of three children was born in 1904 in Manhattan, New York City. In 1920, her parents, sister Ruth (age 12) and brother Carl (age 7), were living at 206 East 84th Street. At age 16, Margaret, was working as a cashier in her father's butcher store ,the Keystone Market, located at 1243 Lexington Ave., near 84th St., Manhattan. Her father sang with a German group, the Schottener Männerchor (men singing). Margaret started out with piano lessons but chose singing lessons and sang in the church choir.
