- Dutch composer and conductor who scored one film. Adam was born in The Hague on 2 August 1900 to shopkeeper Tobias Adam and his wife, the former Susanna Helena Elisabeth Chef d'Hotel. At the age of eighteen, after studying studied violin, viola, clarinet, harmony, music theory, and music history, he graduated in violin and clarinet from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. He became a violinist and clarinetist for the Haarlem Orchestra that same year. Beginning in 1927, he was made second conductor, and then co-principal conductor of of the Haarlem Orchestra, the North Holland Philharmonic Orchestra. He composed music for several ballets, songs, and other orchestral compositions, and conducted a series of popular concerts for school children. As a film musician, he has collaborated on only one film, but his suite, Myrte en de demonen (Myrtle and the Demons) for his 1950 film of the same name, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, directed by himself, is considered one of the most delightful composition for orchestra, among the modern Dutch. He retired from the Haarlem Orchestra in 1965, but continued as a guest conductor for various orchestras. He was married to Elisabeth Mathilde Huijkman in 1923. He died in 1977 following a brief illness, survived by his daughter Marieke.
