- The family descends from the Jewish banking house Rothschild, which was founded in Frankfurt am Main in the 18th century and subsequently developed into one of the largest lenders in Europe with branches in the most important European cities. He founded financial institutions and banks in Switzerland and France (Rothschild Bank, Switzerland, Banca Privata, Lugano, Comp. Financiere Rothschild/Geneva) and made a name for himself as a venture capitalist. Rothschild was made a Knight of the French Legion of Honor and was awarded several other prizes.
