- Johanna and Heinz Sailer live on a farm in Bavaria with his mother Magdalena, who is in need of care. The adult children Caroline and Christof have moved to Munich for their training, but they still like to visit their parents and their bulging refrigerator on weekends. When Magdalena dies unexpectedly one evening, the couple's grief soon gives way to very pragmatic considerations: grandma's pension and care allowance were an integral part of the household budget. The installments for the new tractor have to be paid, the children are far from being able to support themselves financially and Johanna doesn't want to miss out on her monthly visits to the hairdresser. So they simply put the deceased to rest in the freezer instead of reporting her death. When Caroline and Christoph come to visit, they initially react with horror at the macabre game of hide-and-seek. But even for them, moral concerns quickly give way to financial considerations. Using tricks, excuses and a talent for improvisation, the family manages to keep their grandmother's death a secret. Heinz in particular is plagued by remorse because of his mother's frosty interim storage, but going back seems more difficult with each passing day. However, when, completely unexpectedly, Magdalena's level of care is due to be checked, the fraud inevitably threatens to be exposed. Then Johanna has the saving idea: There is a senior citizen named Erni in the neighborhood who would be perfect as a grandmother double. Their loveless children can be persuaded to go on a spontaneous vacation by offering to take Erni in. Everything seems to be going like clockwork - until it turns out that the supposedly senile grandma is not as deranged as she seems. On the contrary: Erni sees through her hosts' game and makes very specific demands in return for their silence. Out of necessity, the family agrees to the deal. With her humorous, idiosyncratic manner, the old lady causes quite a stir at the Sailerhof - but also helps with family conflicts with down-to-earth advice. The Sailers soon become deeply attached to their smart "loan mom" and would prefer not to give her away at all. But finally something happens that no one expected and that could put the clever farming family in dire straits.
