" Mary Pickford Lost Film Found "
PamelaShort25 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This long considered lost Independent Motion Picture Company ( IMP ) film was discovered in an old barn in New Hampshire in 2006. Now restored, it is a simple story about a young newlywed couple, Mary Pickford and Owen Moore, who have their first argument, over a misunderstanding. The new husband believes his young bride is going to run away with a fellow, she has struck up a conversation with at a party. Mary Pickford and Owen Moore play the newlywed couple and were really married at the time this film was made. This is an important discovery for silent film historians and Mary Pickford fans. " Their First Misunderstanding " is Mary Pickford's first film in which she receives screen billing. Before this, studios did not give actors screen credit, for fear they would demand more money if they became household names. Not many of her IMP films survive and most were of inferior quality to begin with. Mary Pickford was to return to the superior Biograph Studios after her first independent adventure, where she would continue refining her unique natural acting qualities. The restoration of this film is amazing along with a very charming story, with Pickford and Moore both giving good performances.

A good many domestic misunderstandings are quite as silly as this

A long story of jealousy on the part of a newly-married couple. After going through all sorts of difficulties, and trying various means of getting away from each other, they make up and live happily ever after. Whether the picture is intended as a type of what actually occurs in many instance, it is impossible to say, but unquestionably, the producer had hit perilously close to facts, in making up his picture. A good many domestic misunderstandings are quite as silly as this. The story has the merit of being clearly told, and of being sufficiently attractive to hold the interest of the audience from beginning to end. - The Moving Picture World, January 21, 1911
