Original plans called for the film to be shot in Bermuda, but the idea was abandoned, and it was filmed in and around New York City.
Adolph Zukor offered James O'Neill $10,000 to recreate his signature role. The actor held out for 10% of what he thought would be box-office bonanza, but the film fared poorly at the box office. O'Neill came to rue his decision, as he netted only $4000 for the film.
James O'Neill played a reported 6000 stage performances as Edmond Dantes. He took over the role in the stage play "Monte Cristo" from Charles Towne--who had collapsed and died after the first performance--and later bought the rights to the play outright.
