- Major Drayton, an Englishman living in America with his daughter Viola, goes to England on business leaving his attorney Nevinson to look after Viola. When war is declared, Drayton joins his regiment and sends Nevinson $30,000 to invest for Viola. After learning that Drayton has been killed, the Nevinsons lose the money in speculation and must take in boarders. Viola, who dreams of being a fairy on the stage, runs away from the drudgery and harsh treatment and joins the chorus of a musical comedy, but again she is treated brutally. Terrified when, dressed as a fairy she is lifted into a cloud, she runs away and meets a waif sleeping in a barrel; the waif thinks that Viola is a real fairy and saves her from freezing. When word arrives that Drayton is alive, the Nevinsons offer a reward for Viola's recovery. After a policeman finds the children, Mrs. Nevinson sells her possessions to repay Drayton, who returns to raise Viola and the waif.—Pamela Short
- Viola Drayton wants to be a real fairy for she is a pretty girl and the fairy's dress makes her look even prettier. Her father, Colonel Drayton, is suddenly called to the European war, and he entrusts his daughter to the care of friends, Mr. and Mrs. Nevinson, placing with them a check for $30,000 to be invested for Viola's benefit. At this time Nevinson is commercially embarrassed. Shortly after Colonel Drayton's arrival in Europe, news comes that he has been killed in battle. Nevinson appropriates Viola Drayton's money, but this does not prevent him from failing in business and his wife is obliged to take in boarders to pay expenses. Viola's position in the household becomes intolerable and she runs away and gets a position in a theater, where she finds that her job as a fairy is a hard one. In despair she leaves the theater and meets a waif who takes her for a real fairy, as she is still wearing her stage dress. Meanwhile, news comes that her father has not been killed. He returns to New York and a reward is offered for the recovery of his lost daughter. A policeman sees this offer, recognizes the girl from the published description, and restores her to her father.—Moving Picture World synopsis
