Defining the Self

As the 35 year old Cecil B. DeMille's audience were middle class, he made films like this one to define the middle classes against the backdrop of the 'urban other'. His interpretation of the urban other were Irish, Polish and Japanese immigrants, playing up to the stereotypes.
