Werner Herzog collaborator Spring Films plots ambitious project.
UK documentary producer and director André Singer (The Act Of Killing) has revealed he is working on an ambitious new project about iconic former Russian statesman Mikhail Gorbachev and his role in the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Singer, the regular Werner Herzog collaborator who produces under the banner of London-based Spring Films, unveiled the project – titled The Enigma Of Mikhail Gorbachev – as one of the central pitches at Sunny Side Of The Doc (Ssd) on Tuesday (June 20).
The feature documentary and series will focus on Gorbachev’s six-year reign as general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Cpsu) from 1985 to 1991, during which time his policies of “glasnost” (openness) and “perestroika” (restructuring) hastened the dissolution of the Soviet Union, fall of Russian-style communism and the end of the Cold War.

History-focused 28th edition of documentary and factual content event runs June 19-22 in La Rochelle.
Upcoming documentaries exploring the life of Mikhail Gorbachev, the space race and Jackie Kennedy’s anti-segregationist work will be among the projects being presented at this year’s Sunny Side of the Doc (Ssd) this year.
The 28th edition of the documentary and factual content market and conference, running June 19-22 on the historic docks of the picturesque French port town of La Rochelle, is putting the onus on history this year.
The focus is in keeping with Ssd’s four-year cycle alternating the annual theme between history, science, human interest and wildlife. But the fact the history theme falls this year is also timely, comments founding director Yves Jeanneau.
“The phrase ‘reinventing history’ sums up what’s going on at the moment. We’re witnessing a renewal and rejuvenation in the way history is being told, both in terms...

DDD60 initiative is aimed at improving Vr experience online and at festivals.
The Cannes Film Festival Marché du Film is partnering with a consortium of European film and tech organisations on a venture designed to improve the user experience of virtual reality content online and at festivals.
Partnering with the Marché are UK film festival Sheffield Doc/Fest, French documentary market Sunny Side of the Doc, Finnish event Tampere Film Festival, technology developer Spin Digital, and film data specialists Reelport Gmbh.
The joint venture plans to enhance end-users’ experience when accessing Vr online by reducing file sizes, which are typically gigantic due to the sheer amount of data involved in rendering Vr environments.
The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme - which is distributing €80bn of funding over seven years (2014 – 2020) - and the partnering organstions are jointly matching the level of funding put in by the EU.

La Rochelle’s Sunny Side of the Doc festival and market previewed Canal+ and BBC’s migrant documentary Exodus.
The challenge of finding new compelling ways to cover the European migrant crisis was at the heart of a panel discussion at Sunny Side of the Doc this week in La Rochelle, France.
The large number of migrants entering Europe in 2015 has prompted a wave of documentaries and factual TV series in recent months.
But as the crisis drags on with no end in sight, refugee fatigue risks setting in as audiences become immune to images of capsized boats and makeshift camps.
Diego Bunuel, head of documentary at Canal+, which is a co-financier with the BBC on the upcoming Exodus: Breaking Into Europe [pictured] by the UK’s Keo Films, said filmmakers needed to go beyond documenting the reality of the crisis.

Since my first trip to Trinidad + Tobago in 2012 when I attended the festival the first time I have been following the course of the documentary and grand transmedia project, “Pan! Our Music Odyssey”, by the film and music producer, Jean Michel Giber. His recently completed Calypso Rose is a doc about a 70 year old Calypso singer) and written by Dr. Kim Johnson a noted authority on the pan in collaboration with story consultant Fernanda Rossi who has doctored films that went on to be nominated for Academy Awards®.
The avant premiere screening of the 80 minute French version by Maturity Productions in Trinidad and Tobago West Indies in association with France Television took place with a live performance of the Odyssey steelband at the party playing the soundtrack of the film where it is creating a buzz at the TV market of Sunny Side of the Docs in La Rochelle, France after finishing its Indiegogo campaign.
Please check the new trailer of the history of Pan (steelband), an extraordinary human adventure Here
The 80 minutes English version will be finalized soon

When I attended the Festival which is coming up again this September 16th - 30th, I was amazed to find this very small country was filled with every race, as varied as the innumerable species of rice. This country is not only a tropical paradise with its beaches and its forests, its music and its people of indescribable beauty, but its intelligence -- made of Amerindian, African, East Indian, Asian, Arabic, Spanish, French, British and American traditions as translated by the new generation -- is unique. The new and well-educated generation, as we all know, has a special edge over the old and the mainstream.
The country's genius-created instrument, Pan, or the steel drum, the only new musical instrument created in the 20th century, is now a subject of study in most university music schools and has more adherents and orchestras abroad than in the country itself. Pan is compulsory in Finnish primary schools. In France it builds self-esteem and discipline in schools in rough neighborhoods. There are more steelbands in Switzerland (although they are smaller) than in T&T (where a small orchestra has 120 members). In African it is different. Johannesburg ensembles combine pans and marimbas. In Tokyo they are extensions of large corporations. Soon all will come to pan’s Mecca for a grand family reunion. During Carnival, 1,000 steel drum musicians converge here from all over the world where a giant parade and competition called Panorama transform T&T into a musical paradise. You cannot imagine the transformative power of a steel band orchestra (called "pan") unless you experience it first hand.

During the last Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (Laliff) director, producer and Nalip member Kimberly Bautista (2012 HBO/Nalip Documentary Filmmaker Award Winner, Lpa 2010) won Best Documentary with Justice For My Sister. The feature documentary deals with domestic violence, murder, and one Guatemalan woman's determination to hold her sister's killer accountable.
The film was presented to a packed house, it received a standing ovation, and was followed by a lively Q&A, where Kimberly was joined on stage by her editor Michael X. Flores and the film's advocacy team, the Justice for my Sister Collective. Attendees included funders Latino Public Broadcasting (Lpb), sponsors National Association of Latino Independent Producers (Nalip), community partners Peace Over Violence, and East Los Angeles Women's Center promotoras (health promoters) - who were sponsored by Supervisor Gloria Molina's Office to attend. Special guests included representatives from the Mexican Consulate, Un Women, and Chime for Change.
Justice for my Sister was unanimously chosen as the winner by the jury, as it shows the strength and resilience of the human spirit, and touched each of the jury members personally.
Affected herself by the issue of gender-based violence and inspired by the fearlessness of her main character Rebeca, Kimberly decided to launch a nationwide violence prevention campaign in Guatemala with the support of an advocacy team. The campaign consists of community screenings, violence prevention and healthy relationships workshops, and a text messaging campaign - launched with Freedom Connect - to connect audiences to services. These initiatives and more are being replicated in Los Angeles, and soon throughout Latin America and target cities in the U.S., with the support of Embassies, Movies That Matter Foundation, Un Women, and others.
This is the third jury prize that Justice For My Sister has won at a festival, the others being: - Movies That Matter Festival, Holland, “Camera Justitia” Jury Prize, March 2013 - Festival Internacional de Cine de los Derechos Humanos de Sucre, Bolivia- "Pukañawi 2013/Ojo Latinoamericano”Jury Prize, July 2013

About Laliff: The Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (Laliff) was founded in 1997 by producer, director, actor and activist Edward James Olmos and independent producer Marlene Dermer. Laliff is a non-profit 501c (3) organization with the mission to support the development and exhibition of diverse visions by Latino filmmakers. To serve as a springboard and catalyst for the promotion of Latin films and filmmakers in the industry locally, nationally & internationally. To develop audiences for such films and in the process bring awareness of the richness and diversity of Latin cultures, artistry and countries through film, the most powerful medium in the world. A competitive festival with prizes, Laliff serves as a venue where Latino filmmakers come together with industry buyers and distributors. Laliff also offers industry workshops, panels, labs, networking receptions, educational programs, and hosts some of the best Galas in tinsel town.
Other awards for the film: - Inaugural Young Alumni Achievement Award for Commitment to Promoting International Domestic Violence Prevention Through Use of Media, Pitzer College, 2013 - Winner of the 2012 HBO/Nalip Documentary Filmmaker Award - 2012 Cornelian Award “Alumna of the Year” from Mayfield Senior School - First Place Winner, Cuban Hat Transmedia Pitch, Sunny Side of the Doc, France, 2012
Currently Justice For My Sister is being considered for the prestigious Japan Prize with Japan\'s Public television network, Nhk.

Having just taken the Audience Award at Laliff, Justice for My Sister was so compelling that I had to take action and so I interviewed the filmmaker Kimberly Bautista....
Kimberly Bautista's debut feature length documentary film, Justice for my Sister, received funding from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Latino Public Broadcasting, the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, and the Dutch Embassy in Guatemala. Justice for my Sister's educational distribution is with New Day Films, and FilmOption International Inc represents its international sales. It has screened in over 150 communities in Guatemala with the help of the Guatemalan Justice for my Sister advocacy team. Kimberly launched a text message-based service in Guatemala to supplement the film and to connect audiences to resources, references, and counseling after community screenings. Her new media and outreach campaign received first prize in the Cuban Hat Transmedia Pitch at Sunny Side of the Doc in La Rochelle, France in June 2012. The film has won several accolades, including the HBO-nalip 2012 Documentary Filmmaker Award, the Camera Justitia Jury Prize at the 2013 Movies that Matter Festival in Holland, and the Ojo Latinoamericano Jury Prize at the 2013 International Human Rights Film Festival in Sucre, Bolivia. Most recently, it won the Prize for Best Documentary at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival.
In June 2013, Kimberly spoke at the United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland on a panel about Violence Against Women & Girls in Latin America & the Caribbean, where she presented Justice for my Sister and the film's campaign. Kimberly is the recipient of the inaugural 2013 Young Alumni Achievement Award from her alma mater Pitzer College for Commitment to Promoting International Domestic Violence Prevention through the Use of Media. She received the prestigious 2012 Alumna of the Year Cornelian Award from Mayfield Senior School for exemplifying the school's motto, "Actions Not Words." She was the finalist for the 2013 Estela "Rising Star" Award for Documentary from Nalip for her work with Justice for my Sister.
In 2006, Kimberly founded and directed the Intercultural Web Exchange, a video pen-pal web program between young women in Quito, Ecuador and young Chicana women in Pomona, California. The project lasted for over three years and culminated in a college prep opportunity for the participants. In 2008, Kimberly filmed testimonies of Guatemalans who witnessed human rights violations; these videos were to be used as evidence of genocide to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights with prosecutors from Cal Berkeley and the Myrna Mack Foundation. She has since worked as a freelance field producer both in Latin America and California for clients in the non- profit sector (Hebrew Immigrant Aide Society, The Un Refugee Agency) and the corporate sector (Herbalife). She has also worked on films such as Patricia Cardoso's Lies in Plain Sight and Morgan Spurlock's Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope, and television programs on Latv and The Learning Channel. She wrote and directed two public service announcements that aired on Univision to encourage Latinos in the Los Angeles area to pursue a higher education.
Kimberly holds a Master's in Social Documentation from University of California, Santa Cruz for film production. In Spring 2013, she worked as a lecturer at California State University Monterey Bay in the Visual and Public Art Department. She acted as a jury member for the Connect the Docs transmedia pitch competition at the 2013 Hot Docs Conference & Forum in Toronto, Canada. She spoke on two panels--about investigative journalism & advocacy film, and women and girls in public media--at the International PUblic Television Screening Conference (Input) in El Salvador this May 2013.
Campaign
"We have established a campaign in Guatemala where we train young people in violence prevention, and they in turn facilitate workshops on healthy relationships with diverse audiences, from the National Civil Police, to indigenous communities, among others. We also have a service called texting peace, where our film advocates connects audiences to services and references via text messaging. We want to bring this documentary and campaign to all of Latin America. Our allies in the Dutch Embassy in Costa Rica have submitted our proposal to the Central American Integration System (Sica)."

Volkswagen has traded its "Star Wars"-themed Super Bowl TV spots for something a bit more uplifting and equally awesome. The car company's newest commercial, called "Sunny Side," has mastered the dark side of YouTube to bring a bit more joy into our lives.
Featuring Jimmy Cliff singing "C'Mon, Get Happy," the video brings together Sad Football Fan, Video Game Freakout, Phil Wellman, Crying Cat Girl and more classic YouTube viral video stars by telling them to "get happy." They certainly look happier singing and dancing together in a sunny field -- even Supermarket Tantrum Girl and Irritated Llama. Is that the power of German engineering, or just a great marketing team? It doesn't really matter, does it?
This is just the latest Super Bowl ad to be released prior to game day (Feb. 3). Amy Poehler stars in a commercial for Best Buy while Kate Upton's Mercedes-Benz ad is already drawing controversy.

If you're already excited for Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator, do yourself a favor and check out a film it's sure to be compared to, and one that was made at the same time the dictator that inspired it was still very much in power, Charlie Chaplin's classic The Great Dictator.
The Great Dictator was Chaplin's first talky following the small bit of gibberish that was included at the end of Modern Times, which was coincidentally the first Chaplin feature Criterion issued on Blu-ray as they have only recently started adding the comedy master's films to the collection. And just like Modern Times, Criterion presents The Great Dictator with a flawless transfer and superb audio track and a bevy of features worth digging into.
If you're unfamiliar, The Great Dictator features Chaplin in dual roles, one as a Jewish barber and the other as a Hitler-esque dictator.

The Great Dictator Directed by: Charles Chaplin Written by: Charles Chaplin Starring: Charles Chaplin, Paulette Goddard and Jack Oakie While The Great Dictator may not be as iconic as Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times or The Gold Rush, it's certainly still a classic piece of filmmaking that demonstrates how a master of silent movies makes the transition into sync sound cinema. While not technically a part of the 'Tramp' series of films, Chaplin still manages to update and reuse his classic character, dropping him into a dark setting -- the Jewish ghetto circa 1939 -- not realizing just how dark the real life counterpart to this story was going to get in the coming years. The film opens in battle during World War I as Charlie Chaplin (playing an unnamed Jewish barber turned soldier) bumbles his way through various tasks on the battlefield. It's classic Chaplin that at first seems slightly...

Chicago – Every time I’ve seen “The Great Dictator,” I’m amazed that it even exists. It is not only one of the great Charlie Chaplin’s most consistently funny films but it is a satirical masterpiece that is So daring that it’s amazing it even got made. It is a piece of slapstick comedy about World War II and Adolf Hitler. Think about that for one minute. Now, it was made in 1940 (a year before our entry into the war), but it was still a risky move to make a piece this politically and socially conscious and try and sell it to an audience who had grown accustomed to watching Charlie Chaplin fall down.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
Now, of course, we can look back at Chaplin’s career now and realize that he was Always socially and politically conscious. “City Lights,” “Modern Times,” the very character of the Tramp...

After all the otherworldly gloom and doom of Fringe's third season, it appears Lieutenant Broyles will be taking a well-earned vacation on the Sunny side.
According to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator Glenn Howerton's Twitter, none other than Lance Reddick himself will appear in a guest spot for the coming season!
We've no idea what type of role the Fringe star will take, but to say the least Always Sunny is a far cry from the piercing-eyed actor's more serious and sci-fi fare, including Lost, The Wire, and Oz.
Also joining the series in guest spots according to the tweet are actor and frequent Coen brothers collaborator Jon Polito, and former-3Lw singer and actress Naturi Naughton. Naturi will also likely be seen this fall as a lead role in NBC's period drama Playboy.

Blow Out (Criterion) Brian De Palma’s greatest Hitchcock homage, with a dash of Antonioni thrown in for good measure. John Travolta gives one of his best turns as a sound-effects engineer who unwittingly records a political assassination, then finds himself hunted by a ruthless hitman (John Lithgow, a memorably creepy psycho) after saving the life of the kindly, albeit dim-witted call girl (Nancy Allen, excellent) who was with the deceased. Terrific blend of suspense and very black humor, perhaps De Palma’s finest hour as an auteur. Beautifully shot by Vilmos Zsigmond. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with De Palma, Allen, cameraman Garrett Brown; Photo gallery; De Palma’s 1967 feature Murder a la Mod; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 2.0 surround.
Kes (Criterion) Ken Loach’s landmark 1970 film is both a heart-rending portrait of adolescence, and a pointed socio-political commentary on life in the North of England.

This past May, the Criterion Collection e-mail newsletter announced that Janus Films had acquired the rights to distribute the works of Charlie Chaplin theatrically. We all celebrated in the notion that we would be able to hopefully see new clean prints of his incredible body of work, as well as the idea that these titles would inevitably make their way into the Criterion Collection.
Whether these titles would be available individually, in box sets (either in Criterion proper, or in the Eclipse Series), or some combination of the two, we still have not heard a definitive statement from Criterion. It is highly likely that we’ll get an announcement for either November or December, as many would love a complete Charlie Chaplin box set to find it’s way onto their holiday wish list.

In the May e-mail newsletter from Criterion, they announced that Janus had acquired the rights to the entire Charlie Chaplin catalog, causing cinephiles everywhere to collectively hold their breath at the prospect of adding the film legend into the Collection.
On June 19th, the American Cinematheque will be screening The Gold Rush along with several other Chaplin short films, courtesy of Janus Films. This past week, we saw another piece of Chaplin news, in that the film A Thief Catcher was discovered in an Antique Sale. The film features an extended cameo from Chaplin. It is unknown at this point where the rights to this film lie, and it is doubtful that it is part of the licensing deal that Janus has with the Chaplin catalog. A Thief Catcher represents the 82 film in his official filmography, which spanned from 1914 through 1967.

The structure of Glen David Gold’s second novel mimics the old-time movie-theatre experience, with America’s steadily increasing involvement in World War I performing as the newsreel that eventually supplants the feature in audience interest. As a work of ceaseless cleverness, national in scope but whose heart dwells in Hollywood, Sunnyside towers over most historical fiction running on the loss and emptiness of three young men forced to evaluate their commitment to God and country on the eve of war. Sunnyside opens with a fantastic and apocryphal scene in which a moment of mass Charlie Chaplin recognition sweeps the ...
