- John Dent is an automobile manufacturer who produces mediocre cars. He decrees that each of his employees must drive one. Dent's secretary, Louise, secretly loves his son Jimmy. Jimmy is induced by Lorraine Tyler to buy a car produced by her father, Dutton Tyler. Tyler orders his son Scott to publish an ad which ridicules Dent's cars. Dent, infuriated, tells Jimmy he can either drive a Dent car or he can get out.
Jimmy reluctantly resigns from his father's company, and agrees to drive overland to California with Lorraine and her brother. Dent is determined to break Tyler's transcontinental record. He suspects Tyler is plotting to wreck some of the Dent cars. Dent's racer is ditched by Tyler's henchmen. Jimmy learns of Tyler's treachery and posts a big prize for a transcontinental race, which turns Lorraine away from him. Jimmy declares he will get the fastest car on the market and enter the race. Dent is determined to enter one of his own cars with another driver. But the driver is in league with Tyler, and forces a quarrel with Dent. So Dent decides to drive his own car. Jimmy steps in and offers to do the driving.
Dent, Louise, Lorraine and her father head for Los Angeles to witness the end of the race. Once the race begins, Jimmy is being outdistanced by the Tyler's car. As the racers reach Dodge City, they encounter heavy rains and have to slow down in the mud. Heading west across the desert, Jimmy has now passed every car except for Tyler's. Tyler, aboard the train for Los Angeles, starts a fire along the route and most of the cars get stuck trying to avoid the flames. Jimmy presses on and passes Tyler's car. Louise, on board the train with Tyler, overhears him plotting to block Jimmy at a tunnel near Los Angeles. She leaves the train and warns Jimmy. But he refuses to take the warning seriously. Then, his mechanic is injured. So Louise disguises herself as another mechanic, and manages to get into Jimmy's car as a replacement. Jimmy encounters the blocked tunnel and finds an alternate route, while the Tyler car is ironically held up at the tunnel. Jimmy wins the race, and at the finish line, discovers Louise has been alongside him.
