Silhouette Animation
boblipton19 February 2020
Herbert Dawley offers Han Christian Andersen's story in charming silhouette animation.

Dawley made these short animated fairy tales for American Pathe for a couple of years, then returned to the local stage, where he directed and produced for half a century.

Silhouette animation, for those who are unfamiliar with it, is a branch of work in which the film maker creates black silhouettes, often elaborately designed and jointed for movement. The best known exponent of this little-known branch of film making was Lott's Reiniger,. LikeMr. Dawley, she often worked in fairy tales or elaborate fantasies.
