- Billy Judkins is morose, the office sad sack, but when his boss in New Jersey transfers him to Los Angeles, Billy is thrilled, racing home, packing his wife and mother into the car, and leaving immediately. On the road he offers assistance to a stranger named Pinkney who is traveling with his wife and the driver of their oversized camper-van. Billy's advice and help never work out, Pinkney is exasperated, and Billy laughs, over and over. They agree to travel together, try to cut down a petrified tree, encounter cactus thorns, fear an Indian attack, and are swamped in a storm. Leaving the Pinkneys submerged, Billy finally reaches Hollywood. What awaits him? Will he still be laughing?—<jhailey@hotmail.com>
