Ruth Etting in Favorite Melodies is my introduction to this forgotten entertainer after first seeing her life story depicted in Love Me or Leave Me
Just watched this one-take musical short with Ruth Etting singing two songs on YouTube. She has such a pleasing voice when she warbles both of the compositions ("My Mother's Eyes" and "That's Him Now") as she's dressed in a splendid gown for the occasion. Since I need some lines to fill, I'll just say I first heard of this woman when her life story was filmed by M-G-M in the '50s with popular singer Doris Day playing her and James Cagney her abusive first husband, Marty Snyder. Quite a compelling drama that was and as always, Ms. Day knows how to sell a song just like the real Ms. Etting here but I also wonder how much of Love Me or Leave Me was true since most film biographies tended to gloss over certain details. Okay, since I now have enough lines to finish this comment, I'll just say go watch Ruth Etting in Favorite Melodies if you're curious about this obscure singer.
