Rather weak Lantz Oswald cartoon
Despite Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and his cartoons being popular and well received at the time, they have been vastly overshadowed over time by succeeding animation characters. It is a shame as, while not cartoon masterpieces, they are fascinating for anybody wanting to see what very old animation looked like.
Sadly, 'the Singing Sap' is one of the worst Walter Lantz Oswald cartoons. Whereas some of the Lantz Oswald cartoons are good, 'The Singing Sap' is very weak and not just one of the worst Lantz Oswald cartoons but also one of the worst Oswald cartoons in general. It is a low-point for Lantz and the material is so lacking that what makes Oswald a good character doesn't shine at all.
There are a few redeeming merits. 'The Singing Sap' does pick up at the end which is quite amusing.
Music has its usual energy, and the gestures, expressions and movements for Oswald are remarkably natural.
Unfortunately there is a lot wrong with 'The Singing Sap'. The animation is pretty crude and lacking in smoothness and detail. Oswald's material is too lacking for him to carry the cartoon well.
Story, even for an Oswald cartoon, is thinner than ice, merely an excuse to string along the gags. It is a shame that almost all the gags are not funny and pretty drawn out and predictable. There is a real lack of energy too.
In conclusion, rather weak. 3/10 Bethany Cox
