The BFI are celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the National Film and Television Archive this month. There are some lectures and the showing of a number of previously "missing"films of which this is the first. It is a film of one of the broad farces that were popular at the time. The most popular were the Aldwych farces,Alfred Drayton being a member of that company. In this film he easily steals the acting honours from Bobby Howes.Howes plays a ships steward who as was often the case in the 30s,suddenly becomes an Earl with a possible legacy of £20000 a year.He becomes mistakenly engaged to Draytons daughter but then tries to avoid this by pretending to be an infant. This is the cue for 20minutes of the most cringe making antics you could see in a cinema. It was woefully unfunny except for 2 ladies sitting in front of me.Howes has some pretty unmemorable numbers to sing. His singing voice is a bit strained. He is not that cinematic and this is borne out by the fact that he only made a handful of film performances where he was the lead.It is nevertheless of great importance that films such as these are saved as they form part of our heritage. The BFI have just issued a new list of 75 wanted films so have a look at this. Not all are missing,i have one of the titles. They are essentially looking for film rather than video copies. So have a look in your attic or garden shed, you never know.
